Howard University Joins with Amazon Studios to Launch Howard Entertainment

Howard University Joins with Amazon Studios to Launch Howard Entertainment

The innovative new program is designed to diversify the pipeline for talent across the entertainment industry

“The vision of Howard Entertainment is to offer a one-of-a-kind experience for students interested in all aspects of entertainment, from project greenlighting, to PR and marketing, to entertainment law and finance,” said President Wayne A. I. Frederick, M.D., MBA. “This relationship aligns with Howard’s strategic goals of enhancing academic excellence and inspiring new knowledge. Collaborating with Amazon Studios will enable us to marry academia and industry efforts to build a robust workforce of diverse entertainment industry leaders. With Howard’s proven track record of developing some of Hollywood’s most notable actors, comedians and musicians, this next level collaboration will enable us to have even greater impact.”

The Howard Entertainment program is an immersive two semester experience located in Los Angeles, California that offers Howard University students the opportunity to take academic courses during the spring semester and participate in a fellowship imbedded in the entertainment industry during the summer semester. The coursework will be applied toward the student’s graduation requirements and the fellowship provides much needed hands-on experience and an opportunity to make invaluable networking connections.

“Amazon Studios has been working to create new pathways into the industry for talented students of all backgrounds and we are proud to team with Howard on this new program supporting aspiring entertainment leaders” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “As we strive to delight our Prime Video customers, we’re ensuring there are diverse perspectives and experiences around the table to help us make the best decisions in all aspects of the business.”

Latasha Gillespie, Amazon Studio’s Global Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion said: “This program is all about intentionality – being intentional about increasing and preparing the next generation of African American, Latinx and Native American storytellers, casts, crew, and executives working on these projects.”

Students will have to engage in a competitive process to be selected for the program. To qualify, students must be enrolled as a Howard University student, must be an upperclassman or graduate student and will have to complete an application and interview to be considered for the program. Students will be taught by Howard faculty who will be supported by Amazon Studios employees and other industry professionals invited by Amazon.  This model will provide the opportunity for students to be engaged in projects that offer “real world” application and will help students develop “work ready” skills prior to graduating. Additionally, students will benefit from an innovative application of academic coursework, and also hone entrepreneurial skills through the project-based approach. Participating schools or colleges at the University will provide additional details on the program and competitive application process at future townhall meetings.

The program kickoff is being announced today during Howard University’s Homecoming celebration week. Amazon Studios is the lead sponsor of this year’s Annual Yardfest, the popular concert series, which throughout the years has featured talent such as Drake, Ludacris, Slick Rick and Rick Ross.

Students who wish to apply for admission into the first cohort can contact HowardEntertainment@howard.edu.

Amazon Prime Video Picks Up Second Season of "Absentia," Starring and Executive Produced by Stana Katic

Amazon Prime Video Picks Up Second Season of "Absentia," Starring and Executive Produced by Stana Katic
New cast members joining season two include Matthew Le Nevez and Natasha Little.
[via press release from Amazon] Amazon Prime Video Picks Up Second Season of "Absentia," Starring and Executive Produced by Stana Katic

Natasha Little and Matthew Le Nevez Join Cast for Sophomore Season, Now in Production in Bulgaria

Amazon today announced that it has picked up binge-worthy thriller Absentia for a second season, to debut in 2019 exclusively on Prime Video in the U.S., as well as in select markets globally, including Australia, Austria, Germany, India, Israel, Italy, Netherlands, Singapore, South Korea, Turkey and the U.K. Currently in production in Sofia, Bulgaria, Absentia was commissioned for Sony Pictures Television's international networks, is produced by Masha Productions and distributed by Sony Pictures Television.

Absentia, starring and executive produced by Castle's Stana Katic, centers on FBI agent Emily Byrne (Katic). In season one, Emily disappeared without a trace and was declared dead after hunting one of Boston's most notorious serial killers. Six years later, Emily was found in a cabin in the woods, barely alive, and with no memory of the years she was missing. Returning home to learn her husband had remarried and her son was being raised by another woman, she soon found herself implicated in a new series of murders. In season two, after tracking down and killing her abductor, Emily struggles for a tenuous new normal with son Flynn and ex-husband Nick. But her obsessive investigation into the questions that haunt her uncovers a serial killer and a spiraling conspiracy that threatens more than just her family.

New cast members joining season two include Matthew Le Nevez (The Widow) and Natasha Little (The Night Manager). Le Nevez will portray the character Cal Isaac, a rugged ex-Navy SEAL with a disarmingly upbeat disposition. Cal's familiar with the demons that chase Emily (Katic) and proves to be a loyal and sympathetic counterpart to the series heroine. Little will portray the character of Special Agent Julianne Gunnarsen, an accomplished, enigmatic and beautiful FBI Profiler with a chilly efficiency who joins the ranks of the Boston FBI Field Office after a deadly terrorist attack rocks the city. Patrick Heusinger returns for season two as Emily's ex-husband and Special Agent Nick Durand.

"Absentia really resonated with our Prime Video audience who were enthralled by the thrilling storyline and complicated characters," said Vernon Sanders, Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios. "Stana Katic is immensely talented and we look forward to her peeling away the layers of a twisted conspiracy that is deeper than her character "Emily" could have ever imagined in season two."

"From its inception on Sony's international networks, Absentia has been a hit with global audiences," said Marie Jacobson, EVP, Programming & Production, Sony Pictures Television Networks. "We're thrilled to push our story forward into season two and couldn't ask for a better home than Amazon for our signature Sony Networks series."

The series is executive produced and directed by Oded Ruskin (False Flag), alongside executive producers Julie Glucksman, Katic and Maria Feldman (False Flag, Fauda). Directors also include Adam Sanderson and Kasia Adamik. The series was created by Gaia Violo and Matt Cirulnick and is based on a pilot script originally written by Violo.

In addition to Katic, Heusinger, Le Nevez and Little, Absentia's internationally renowned ensemble cast includes Cara Theobold (Downton Abbey), Neil Jackson (Sleepy Hollow), Angel Bonanni (False Flag), Paul Freeman (The Dogs of War) and Patrick McAuley (The Conjuring 2).
Absentia will be available for Prime members to stream and enjoy using the Amazon Prime Video app for TVs, connected devices including Amazon Fire TV, and mobile devices, or online with other Amazon Original Series online at Amazon.com/originals, at no additional cost to their membership. AMAZON ORIGINAL SERIES “TRANSPARENT” COMING TO SUNDANCE TV THIS SUMMER

First Two Seasons of Acclaimed and Award-Winning Series Will Appear for the First Time on Commercially-Supported Linear TV on Wednesday Nights in August and September on SundanceTV

NEW YORK, NY -- APRIL 6, 2017 -- SundanceTV today announced it will bring the first two seasons of Amazon Studios’ Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning original series “Transparent” to SundanceTV late this summer. Created by Jill Soloway and starring Jeffrey Tambor, Judith Light, Amy Landecker, Gaby Hoffmann and Jay Duplass, “Transparent” will appear for the first time on linear television, with multiple episodes running on Wednesday nights on SundanceTV starting August 9 at 10pm ET / 9pm C. Announced at the AMC Networks upfront event in New York, this will be the first time ad buyers can buy “Transparent” on commercial television.

“In addition to offering our own originals, SundanceTV is committed to bringing viewers the best TV from around the world, and Amazon’s original series ‘Transparent’ is unquestionably a groundbreaking and well-crafted series that fits perfectly within the SundanceTV brand.  We could not be more thrilled to be the first linear television home for this series, which has received an overwhelming chorus of well-deserved critical acclaim and awards recognition,” said Jan Diedrichsen, General Manager, SundanceTV. “We look forward to introducing a whole new audience to this iconic series and creating a true television event this August.”

“Bringing Transparent to a linear TV audience will give even more people an opportunity to experience the critically-acclaimed, award-wining content we’re creating,” said Roy Price, Vice President, Amazon Studios. “Transparent is truly groundbreaking television and I know viewers will enjoy becoming part of the Pfefferman family journey.”

“Transparent” is a half hour novelistic series that explores family, identity, sex, and love. The first season follows Maura Pfferman’s journey to being her true self. When she reintroduces herself to her family, everyone else’s secrets finally came out. This includes her ex-wife Shelly, and their adult children—meandering Ali, record producer Josh, and sexually conflicted Sarah. Each family member is spun into different directions as they figured out who they aren’t.

In the second season the bubble wrap is off - it's time for the whole family to transition. The Pfeffermans realize they must give up their disguises, unspoken arrangements and secrets. By exploring their shared history and legacy, they come to understand that you can't go forward without knowing where you come from. Ultimately, everyone will open their hearts, advertise their desires, and test those notoriously wobbly boundaries as each Pfefferman tries their hardest to come out – as themselves.

Amazon is currently developing a script-to-series one-hour original limited drama, The Underground Railroad, based on Colson Whitehead's National Book Award winning novel. Set to write and direct is Oscar winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), with the series slated to be executive produced by Pastel (Moonlight) and Brad Pitt's Plan B (Moonlight, 12 Years a Slave).

Published by Doubleday, The Underground Railroad has sold over 825,000 copies in the United States across all formats. An Oprah's Book Club 2016 selection, #1 New York Times bestseller, and the winner of the 2016 National Book Award for Fiction, The Underground Railroad chronicles young Cora's journey as she makes a desperate bid for freedom in the antebellum South. After escaping her Georgia plantation for the rumored Underground Railroad, Cora discovers no mere metaphor, but an actual railroad full of engineers and conductors, and a secret network of tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil.

"Going back to The Intuitionist, Colson's writing has always defied convention, and The Underground Railroad is no different," said Barry Jenkins. "It's a groundbreaking work that pays respect to our nation's history while using the form to explore it in a thoughtful and original way. Preserving the sweep and grandeur of a story like this requires bold, innovative thinking and in Amazon we've found a partner whose reverence for storytelling and freeness of form is wholly in line with our vision."

"Colson Whitehead's book is a sweeping, character driven, boundary destroying epic," said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy, Drama and VR, Amazon Studios. "Having Barry bring it to life for Amazon Studios is thrilling. We couldn't be more excited to see what they create."

PASTEL was founded by Barry Jenkins, Adele Romanski and Sara Murphy as a home for artists to create provocative, boundary-pushing work in film, television and beyond. In addition to developing in-house productions for Jenkins, PASTEL focuses on supporting diverse projects and empowering filmmakers that further the mandate of integrity, urgency and specificity set forth by MOONLIGHT.
Plan B is represented by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners. Barry Jenkins is represented by Silent R Management and CAA. Colson Whitehead is represented by Nicole Aragi at Aragi Inc. and Geoffrey Sanford and Brooke Ehrlich at The Sanford Ehrlich Company.

A new body is discovered on the other side of town and Eric must step up and lead this horrific investigation. Quaid stars as Michael Lennox, a fisherman and patriarch of a family living in Fortitude, who is struggling to come to terms with his terminally ill wife, and will try anything to find a cure.

"Tumble Leaf Spring-A-Ling Surprise" Debuts on April 4

On Tuesday, April 4, Amazon Original Special Tumble Leaf Spring-A-Ling Surprise is set to premiere on Prime Video in the US and UK. Directed by Drew Hodges (Community) and executive produced by Hodges and Kelli Bixler (The Roadents) of the award-winning studio Bix Pix Entertainment, Tumble Leaf features lush worlds, playful stop-motion animation and scientific thinking through play. In this special, everyone helps Bloom the bunny hunt for his lost eggs, which he plans to plant for a spectacular spring surprise, and Fig uncovers many other signs of the bright and sunny season of spring along the way.

"The show is a lovely invitation to explore the world just beyond our doors, and a celebration of the magic that is revealed to us anew each year with the coming of spring, said Scot Osterweil, Creative Director of the MIT Education Arcade. As with all Tumble Leaf episodes, it's a reminder for adults as well as young children that play is a portal to wonder and discovery."

Yesterday, Tumble Leaf received four 2017 Daytime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Pre-School Children's Animated Program, Outstanding Directing in a Preschool Animated Program, Outstanding Sound Mixing - Preschool Animated Program, and Outstanding Sound Editing - Preschool Animated Program. Since its debut, Tumble Leaf has garnered numerous awards, including eight Daytime Emmy Awards winning Outstanding Preschool Children's Animated Program in 2015 and 2016, the Jury Award for a TV series at the 2014 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, three Annie Awards for Best Animated TV/Broadcast Production for Preschool Children (2015-2017), three Parents' Choice Gold Awards (2015-2017), and Christopher Downs (Fig) won the Young Artist Award in 2015 for Best Performance in a Voice-Over Role - Young Actor 10 or Under.

Season one and two both have an average customer rating of 4.9 stars. Here is what customers have been saying:

· "This is my daughter's favorite show. She walks around the house saying, "Let me figure this out... " It's adorable and also very clever. Unique in that it's teaching about scientific principles instead of the usual ABC type shows. More Tumble Leaf, please!!"

· "My two year old son just loves this show. I think he's watched each episode 3-4 times over already. I knew it was a huge hit and having an influence on him when he started saying: "Let's figure this out" when meeting something new or trying to come up with a solution. He talked about springs, pulleys, all sorts of wonderful concepts after the show."

· "My three year old loves this show and it is such a high caliber of educational value that I can handle watching the same thirteen episodes over and over again. As he sits quietly enthralled in Fig's discoveries and gets so happy every time he sees Stick, it is obvious the gears in my son's head are turning as he learns the brilliantly crafted physical science lessons this show is embedded throughout. I would absolutely recommend this to your little engineer/scientist."

· "I love this program. It is rich in color and scenery which keeps our son engaged. Each episode demonstrates problem solving, a rich vocabulary, a topic or theme that can be recreated to learn with a hands on approach. Encourages play at the end of each episode."

· "... I think this show does a fantastic job of demonstrating how to approach creative problem solving. The characters start with a problem, and try a series of different ideas for solving it, learning from each failed attempt."

Seasons one and two of Tumble Leaf are available for Prime members to stream and enjoy using the Amazon Video app for compatible TVs, connected devices, including Amazon Fire TV and mobile devices, or online at www.amazon.com/kidsoriginals, at no additional cost to their membership. [via press release from Amazon] Amazon Studios Greenlights a Fourth Season of the Golden Globe Award-Winning Series "Mozart in the Jungle" and a Final Season of Hit Comedy Series "Red Oaks"
Both series are expected to premiere later this year on Prime Video in the US and UK, and additional territories in the future

SEATTLE - January 30, 2017 - (NASDAQ: AMZN) - Amazon Studios today announced it has green lit a fourth season of the Golden Globe award-winning series Mozart in the Jungle, and a final, third season of the hit comedy series Red Oaks. Both are scheduled to premiere later this year on Prime Video in the US and UK, and additional territories in the future.

"Amazon Studios has been built by the risky, creative genius of shows like Mozart in the Jungle and Red Oaks," said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy and Drama, Amazon Studios. "We are excited to see how the amazing creators, casts and crews top themselves next season."

Roman Coppola commented on behalf of the executive producers of Mozart in the Jungle: "We're all delighted to be back for a fourth season and to share the further tales of our orchestra and all the artists who comprise it. For the fans who have been so enthusiastic about our show, we're so happy to have an audience that wants to see stories about the arts, music, and all these characters we've invented."

Red Oaks creators Joe Gangemi and Greg Jacobs commented: "We've always hoped to send these characters off to their futures with a third and final season, so we're thrilled that Amazon has given us the opportunity to do so."

Based on the critically acclaimed memoir Mozart in the Jungle: Sex, Drugs & Classical Music by Blair Tindall, Mozart in the Jungle draws back the curtain at the New York Symphony, where artistic dedication and creativity collide with mind games, politicking and survival instincts. Starring Gael García Bernal (Neruda), and Lola Kirke (American Made), Mozart in the Jungle will begin production later this year and will continue the story of the talented musicians who perform and live with passion under the baton of its spirited conductor, best known simply as Rodrigo. Along with Bernal and Kirke, Mozart in the Jungle also stars Saffron Burrows (Night of the Lotus), Malcolm McDowell (American Satan), Bernadette Peters (Smash), and Hannah Dunne (Caring). The series is executive produced by Roman Coppola (Moonrise Kingdom), Jason Schwartzman (The Darjeeling Limited), Paul Weitz (About a Boy), and Will Graham (Alpha House).

Set in the 1980s, Red Oaks explores the comic misadventures of the misfit staffers and clueless members of a country club in suburban New Jersey. Starring Craig Roberts (Submarine: The Fundamentals of Caregiving), and Paul Reiser (Mad About You), Red Oaks will begin production later this year on its third and final season, concluding the stories of aspiring young filmmaker David Meyers and the colorful characters he's met on his journey to adulthood. Starring alongside Roberts and Reiser is a talented ensemble cast including Richard Kind (Inside Out), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing), Alexandra Socha (Cut Shoot Kill), Oliver Cooper (Office Christmas Party), Ennis Esmer (Blindspot), Gina Gershon (Staten Island Summer) and Alexandra Turschen (Boy Meets Girl). The series was created by Gregory Jacobs (Magic Mike XXL) and Joe Gangemi (Stonehearst Asylum), and is executive produced by Jacobs and Gangemi with Steven Soderbergh (The Knick) and David Gordon Green (Pineapple Express).

The fourth season of Mozart in the Jungle, and the final, third season of Red Oaks will be available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video for members to watch via the Prime Video app for popular smart TVs, Fire TV, Fire Tablets and Android and iOS phones and tablets. Past seasons of both series are available to watch on PrimeVideo.com for Prime Video members in more than 200 countries and territories.

Amazon Original Series "Patriot" to Screen at Berlin Film Festival, Berlinale
Michael Dorman, Terry O'Quinn, Kurtwood Smith and Michael Chernus star in the drama, the full season of which rolls out on the streaming service February 24.
[via press release from Amazon] Amazon Original Series "PATRIOT" to Screen at Berlin Film Festival, Berlinale
We are proud to announce today that our upcoming Amazon Original Series Patriot will have its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, Berlinale. The screening, scheduled for on February 14, is the only US series selected for this year's festival.

Starring Michael Dorman (Wonderland), Emmy winner Terry O'Quinn (Lost), Kurtwood Smith (That 70's Show) and Michael Chernus (Manhattan Project), Patriot follows the complicated life of intelligence officer John Tavner (Dorman). His latest assignment is to prevent Iran from going nuclear, requiring him to forgo all safety nets and assume a perilous "non-official cover" - that of a mid-level employee at a Midwestern industrial piping firm. A bout with PTSD, the Federal government's incompetence and the intricacies of keeping a day job in the "front" industrial piping company cause a barrage of ever-escalating fiascos that jeopardize Tavner's mission. The series is executive produced by Steven Conrad (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty), who also writes and directs on the series, James Parriott (Grey's Anatomy), Glenn Ficarra (This Is Us), John Requa (Crazy Stupid Love, Focus), Charles Gogolak (Focus), and Gil Bellows (Temple Grandin). Customers can watch the pilot episode before the full season's remaining nine episodes air on February 24.

Patriot explores the lesser known, unglamorous aspects of life as an intelligence officer. While the future of the world is at stake, it's often the idiosyncrasies of those around John Tavner that force him to have to choose between bad alternatives. Those characters include Tom Tavner (O'Quinn), John's State Department Director of Intelligence father; John's older brother Edward Tavner (Chernus), a young Texas congressman; John's wife Alice, played by Kathleen Munroe (Call Me Fitz); Agathe, played by Aliette Opheim (Sandor slash Ida), a brilliant young homicide detective from Luxembourg hot on John's trail; and Mr. Claret (Smith), John's stickler of a new "boss" at the piping firm where John is "employed."

THE BOTTOM LINE: Let this be a long con..." - Tim Goodman, The Hollywood Reporter

· "... a nice turn from Marin Ireland as Pete's cousin and Marius' fellow bond agent. As for Cranston and Martindale, their work is as riveting and entertaining as always - filled with humor, menace, nuance and a lively intelligence." - Robert Bianco, USA TODAY

Set to debut in 2018 on Prime Video, Good Omens is a six part series that has been entirely written by Gaiman, who will also serve as Showrunner. BBC Studios is co-producing the series with Narrativia and The Blank Corporation and in association with BBC Worldwide for Amazon Prime Video and the BBC.
Good Omens will be a global release and available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video for members to watch via the Prime Video app for popular smart TVs, Fire TV, Fire Tablets and Android and iOS phones and tablets. The show will also be available on PrimeVideo.com for Prime Video members in more than 200 countries and territories. The show will also broadcast on the BBC in the UK, following its premiere on Prime Video.

Good Omens takes place in 2018 when the Apocalypse is near and Final Judgment is set to descend upon humanity. According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.

So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, and tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except Aziraphale, a somewhat fussy angel, and Crowley, a fast-living demon - both of whom have lived amongst Earth's mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle - are not actually looking forward to the coming war. And... someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

"Spanning not only the universe but also the entirety of time, Neil Gaiman has created a story that may be the largest ever told on television," said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy and Drama, Amazon Studios. "We're excited to be working with BBC Studios to bring Neil and Terry Pratchett's incredible book to life and to Prime members everywhere."

Neil Gaiman, writer, said: "Almost thirty years ago, Terry Pratchett and I wrote the funniest novel we could about the end of the world, populated with angels and demons, not to mention an eleven-year old Antichrist, witchfinders and the four horsepeople of the Apocalypse. It became many people's favourite book. Three decades later, it's going to make it to the screen. I can't think of anyone we'd rather make it with than BBC Studios, and I just wish Sir Terry were alive to see it."
Chris Sussman, Head of Comedy, BBC Studios said "Good Omens has always been one of my favourite books, and it's hugely exciting not just to be able to bring it to life, but to do so with scripts from Neil Gaiman himself. It feels like a good time to be making a comedy about an impending global apocalypse."

Executive Producers of the series are Neil Gaiman, Caroline Skinner (Doctor Who), and Chris Sussman (Fleabag) for BBC Studios; Rob Wilkins (Choosing to Die) and Rod Brown (Going Postal) for Narrativia. Gaiman will adapt the novel for the screen.
