Award-winning French actor Tahar Rahim (The Looming Tower, A Prophet, The Eddy) will star as Charles Sobhraj in the brand new drama series The Serpent, based on the astonishing true story of how one of the most elusive criminals of the 20th century was caught and brought to trial.
Commissioned by BBC One, The Serpent will be produced by Mammoth Screen (Poldark, World on Fire) and is a co-production between BBC One and Netflix. The eight-part limited series is written by Richard Warlow (Ripper Street) and Toby Finlay (Ripper Street) and directed by Tom Shankland (Les Miserables).

Charles Sobhraj was the chief suspect in the unsolved murders of up to 20 young Western travellers across India, Thailand and Nepal through 1975 and 1976. Psychopath, con man, thief and master of disguise, having slipped repeatedly from the grasp of authorities worldwide, by 1976 serial killer Sobhraj was Interpol's most wanted man and had arrest warrants on three different continents.
When Herman Knippenberg, a junior diplomat at the Dutch Embassy in Bangkok, unwittingly walks into Sobhraj's intricate web of crime, he sets off an extraordinary chain of events that will see these two diametrically opposed men engaged in a chase across the porous borders of the Hippie Trail, as Knippenberg seeks to bring Sobhraj to justice for his terrible crimes.

Tahar Rahim says: "I am thrilled to play Charles Sobhraj in The Serpent, a role I have dreamed of portraying since I read a book about him when I was seventeen years old. I couldn't be happier than to make it under the direction of Tom Shankland and writers Richard Warlow and Toby Finlay."
Preethi Mavahalli, Executive Producer at Mammoth Screen, says: "It is an absolute honour to have Tahar Rahim, one of France's finest actors, join us in bringing this extraordinary story of the notorious French serial killer Charles Sobhraj to screen."

John Boyega and Letitia Wright Set to Star in Steve McQueen Series for BBC One

John Boyega and Letitia Wright Set to Star in Steve McQueen Series for BBC One
Amazon has licensed the show - "Small Axe," a London-set 1970s anthology - in the United States.
[via press release from BBC] John Boyega and Letitia Wright set to star in Steve McQueen series for BBC One
Small Axe, a London-set 1970s anthology, began shooting on 24 June.

BBC One, Turbine Studios and Lammas Park are proud to announce that Oscar and Bafta-winning filmmaker Steve McQueen (Widows, Twelve Years A Slave) has cast his TV series entitled Small Axe for BBC One with an all-star British cast including John Boyega and Letitia Wright. The series is executive produced by Tracey Scoffield and David Tanner for Turbine Studios and Steve McQueen for Lammas Park. Shooting began on location in London on June 24.

Joining the cast are Evening Standard Theatre Awards' Outstanding Newcomer Malachi Kirby (Curfew, Black Mirror, Roots), Shaun Parkes (Lost In Space, Hooten & The Lady), Rochenda Sandall (Line Of Duty, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch), Alex Jennings (A Very English Scandal, Victoria) and Jack Lowden (The Long Song, Mary Queen of Scots).

Small Axe is an anthology of hour-long stories conceived and written by Steve McQueen with Alastair Siddons and Courttia Newland. Alex Wheatle is a writing consultant to the series.
The 6x60' films tell five stories, with the first told across two episodes, and are set within London's West Indian community from the late 1960s to the early 80s.

The title Small Axe is derived from a Jamaican proverb which has resonance throughout the Caribbean, "if you are the big tree, we are the small axe". Small Axe is also the title of a Bob Marley song from his 1973 album Catch A Fire. It means that relatively marginal or small voices of dissent can successfully challenge more powerful voices.

Mike Elliot is producing for EMU Films with Turbine Studios and Anita Overland. Associate producers are Charlotte Andrews for Turbine Studios, Susan Dolan for Lammas Park and Helen Bart.
The drama has been commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, and the executive producer for the BBC is Lucy Richer, Senior Commissioning Editor for Drama. Amazon has licensed the show for the US. BBC Studios is handling worldwide sales.

Steve McQueen says: "I felt these stories needed to be shared. I wanted to re-live, re-evaluate and investigate the journeys that my parents and the first generation of West Indians went on to deliver me here today calling myself a Black British person. What's important about our stories is that they are local but at the same time global. I think audiences will identify with the trials, tribulations and joy of our characters as well as reflecting on the present environment in which we find ourselves. The dynamic nature of the series allows us to confront injustice in the face of adversity hence the proverb Small Axe, 'if you are the big tree, we are the small axe' (Bob Marley)."

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: "It is an honour to have Steve McQueen, along with this stellar cast, tell these important and inspiring stories on BBC One. Small Axe will air on BBC One next year, and this powerful drama is not to be missed."

Tracey Scoffield, Turbine Studios Executive Producer, says: "We've been working with Steve McQueen and the BBC for over five years developing this project and the privilege continues now we are in production, putting together the best cast and crew to do justice to these incredible stories and the real people behind them."

John Boyega is best known for his role as Finn in the latest feature films in the Star Wars franchise. Letitia Wright most recently starred in the box office and awards season sensation Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.

This is newly formed Turbine Studios' first project out of the gate. The company, set up last year by producers Scoffield and Tanner alongside Andrew Eaton (The Crown, The Trip), and Justin Thomson (The Fall, Death Comes To Pemberley), is building an impressive slate of TV and film projects.

BBC One Announces New Agatha Christie Thriller "The Pale Horse"

BBC One Announces New Agatha Christie Thriller "The Pale Horse"
The two-part drama, a co-production with Amazon Prime Video, is adapted from the book of the same name and will be directed by Leonora Lonsdale.
[via press release from BBC] BBC One announces new Agatha Christie thriller The Pale Horse

The BBC, Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited today announce the commission of the latest Agatha Christie story to be adapted for television. The Pale Horse, first published in 1961, will be adapted by Bafta-nominated writer Sarah Phelps.

James Prichard, Executive Producer and CEO of Agatha Christie Limited, says: "The Pale Horse was one of the later novels penned by my great grandmother, written as it was in the 1960s. This new drama allows writer Sarah Phelps to continue her exploration of the 20th century through Christie's stories, with the book's fantastic, foreboding atmosphere completely suited to Sarah's unique style of adaptation."

When a mysterious list of names is found in the shoe of a dead woman, one of those named, Mark Easterbrook, begins an investigation into how and why his name came to be there. He is drawn to The Pale Horse, the home of a trio of rumoured witches in the tiny village of Much Deeping. Word has it that the witches can do away with wealthy relatives using the dark arts alone, but as the bodies mount up Mark is certain there has to be a rational explanation. And who could possibly want him dead?
Sarah Phelps, Writer and Executive Producer, says: "Written in 1961, against the backdrop of the Eichmann Trial, the escalation of the Cold War and Vietnam, The Pale Horse is a shivery, paranoid story about superstition, love gone wrong, guilt and grief. It's about what we're capable of when we're desperate and what we believe when all the lights go out and we're alone in the dark."

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: "Sarah Phelps' adaptations of Agatha Christie's most iconic novels have introduced the author's work to a new generation of fans. The Pale Horse is one of her most unusual and atmospheric works and lends itself perfectly to another stunning screen adaptation from Sarah."

Helen Ziegler, Executive Producer for Mammoth Screen, adds: "Sarah Phelps has crafted an extraordinary adaptation of Agatha Christie's celebrated 1960s novel The Pale Horse, where the rational world and dark supernatural forces seem to collide. Asking the question, how far would you go to protect your own happiness? it's a tale of guilt, terror and witchcraft with we hope will delight and terrify viewers in equal measure!"

The two-part drama adapted from the book of the same name will be directed by Leonora Lonsdale (Beast) and produced by Ado Yoshizaki Cassuto (City Of Tiny Lights).
Casting will be announced at a later date.

The Pale Horse is a Mammoth Screen and Agatha Christie Limited drama for BBC One. The executive producers are Sarah Phelps, Damien Timmer and Helen Ziegler for Mammoth Screen, James Prichard and Basi Akpabio for Agatha Christie Limited and Tommy Bulfin for BBC.
Amazon Prime Video are US co-production partners and Endeavor Content will handle sales in all territories internationally.

ON THE HEELS OF THE WILDLY SUCCESSFUL AND AWARD-WINNING SERIES “THE NIGHT MANAGER,” THE INK FACTORY, BBC AND AMC ANNOUNCE NEXT JOHN LE CARRÉ PROJECT — “THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL”

ON THE HEELS OF THE WILDLY SUCCESSFUL AND AWARD-WINNING SERIES “THE NIGHT MANAGER,” THE INK FACTORY, BBC AND AMC ANNOUNCE NEXT JOHN LE CARRÉ PROJECT — “THE LITTLE DRUMMER GIRL”

Florence Pugh to Star in the Park Chan-wook Directed Series; The series will be sold globally by Endeavor Content / IMG

London, England [8 November 2017] – On the heels of the BAFTA®, Golden Globe® and Emmy® Award-winning series “The Night Manager,” starring Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman, The Ink Factory, BBC ONE and AMC announced today that the next project the three companies will be adapting into a six-part mini-series will be John le Carré’s best-selling literary masterpiece “The Little Drummer Girl.” The series will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker Park Chan-wook (Old Boy, The Handmaiden, Stoker), marking his television debut. Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth) will star. “The Little Drummer Girl” is set to go into production in January 2018. The series will be sold globally by Endeavor Content / IMG.

The series will be financed and produced by The Ink Factory in partnership with 127 Wall and co-producers the BBC and AMC. Laura Hastings-Smith (“Howards End”, Macbeth and Hunger) will work as Producer with Simon and Stephen Cornwell serving as Executive Producers alongside John le Carré, Mona Qureshi for the BBC, Joe Tsai and Arthur Wang for 127 Wall, and Wonjo Jeong. Hastings-Smith leads a world-class production team including Production Designer Maria Djurkovic (The Imitation Game, The Hours), Director of Photography Woo-hyung Kim (The Taste of Money, The President’s Last Bang), Casting Director Jina Jay (Darkest Hour, Rogue One), Costume Designer Steven Noble (The Theory of Everything, A Monster Calls) and Supervising Editor Lucia Zucchetti (The Queen, Their Finest).

“The Little Drummer Girl” has been commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, and Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, Kristin Jones, SVP International Programming for AMC and Sundance TV, and David Madden, President of Programming, AMC, Sundance TV and AMC Studios.

Set in the late 1970s, “The Little Drummer Girl” weaves a dynamic and exciting story of espionage and international intrigue; of love and betrayal. In this high-stakes drama, set against the background of rising tensions in the Middle East, a young, brilliant actress Charlie (Pugh) prepares for her ultimate role in ‘the theatre of the real’.

Park Chan-wook added: “Of le Carré’s many masterpieces, the one I love ahead of any other is “The Little Drummer Girl”. At the core of this story is an extremely painful, but thrilling, romance. This is what makes the story universal, reaching beyond borders and languages and remaining incredibly current. To adapt such a great work without losing its integrity, it needs the time and depth of a television series, and I am excited at the prospect of seeing how the drumbeats of Florence Pugh, the most energetic young female actor I have seen recently, will resonate with the audience.”
Simon and Stephen Cornwell, co-CEOs and Founders of The Ink Factory said: “With “The Little Drummer Girl” we are embarking on an extraordinary journey. It is exhilarating to see one of le Carré’s greatest novels take shape for the screen in the hands of such a brilliantly talented team. Park Chan-wook is a master filmmaker at the height of his powers. His passion for the project and his vision are utterly compelling. Florence Pugh is an exciting actor whose Charlie will lead us on a heart-wrenching journey, and the team behind the camera assembled under Laura Hastings-Smith’s steadfast leadership is unparalleled. We could not be more excited to be working with our friends and partners at the BBC and at AMC to bring “The Little Drummer Girl” to audiences around the world.”
Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, said: “We are thrilled by the extraordinary array of talents which The Ink Factory are assembling to bring this iconic le Carré story to the screen. The combination of Director Park’s passion for this title and the huge screen presence of Florence Pugh will make for a real drama event when “Little Drummer Girl” premieres on BBC ONE.”

“After the tremendous reception by U.S. audiences to “The Night Manager”, we are thrilled to be working again with The Ink Factory and the BBC on another brilliantly-plotted and deeply emotional John le Carré thriller, “The Little Drummer Girl”,” said David Madden, President of Original Programming for AMC, Sundance TV and AMC Studios. “Personally speaking, I read the book when it was published in the 1980s, and it’s frightening and thought-provoking to recognize how relevant the story still is today. Florence Pugh is a gifted actress who will make a stunning Charlie, and Park is a filmmaker of extraordinary vision whose entry into the world of le Carré-style espionage should be irresistible.”

Park is a film director, screenwriter, producer and former film critic who has emerged as one of the most significant talents in cinema in recent years. He is best known for his films Joint Security Area, Thirst, The Handmaiden and what has become known as The Vengeance Trilogy consisting of Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance.

Pugh recently starred as Katherine in critically acclaimed Lady Macbeth, which won her The Evening Standard Breakthrough of the Year Award. She is currently filming David Mackenzie’s Outlaw King, the story of Robert the Bruce, opposite Chris Pine, and is playing Cordelia in BBC/Amazon’s King Lear, directed by Richard Eyre and also starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson.

From award-winning playwright Nick Payne, directed by Luke Snellin and produced by Drama Republic
Toni Collette (Little Miss Sunshine, The Sixth Sense, Miss You Already) stars in Wanderlust, a searingly insightful and funny exploration of the relationships of a multi-generational family.
Toni is joined by Steven Mackintosh (A Song For Jenny, Stan Lee's Lucky Man, The Halcyon), Zawe Ashton (Fresh Meat, Not Safe For Work, Case Histories) and Royce Pierreson (Line Of Duty, Our Girl, Murdered By My Boyfriend) in the six-part drama. Wanderlust follows Joy Richards (Toni Collette) a therapist trying to find a way to keep her spark with her husband alive after a cycling accident causes them to reassess their relationship. As we meet her family, friends, neighbours and clients, remarkable yet relatable stories of love, lust and forbidden desire emerge.
Toni Collette said: “I am honoured and thrilled to work with Nick Payne's wonderful words on Wanderlust. It is an authentic and revolutionary story about relationships, sex, love and all the things we really care about. I could not be more excited.”
Nick Payne said: “I'm over the moon to be working with Drama Republic, the BBC and Netflix.  And the cast - what a galaxy of talent.  Toni Collette is an astronomically adept performer, and someone I've long admired.”

Suranne Jones to Star in "Gentleman Jack," Sally Wainwright's New Drama for BBC One and HBO

Suranne Jones to Star in "Gentleman Jack," Sally Wainwright's New Drama for BBC One and HBO
The eight-episode series was previously known as "Shibden Hall."
[via press release from BBC] Suranne Jones to star in Gentleman Jack, Sally Wainwright's new drama for BBC One and HBO
Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster, Save Me, Scott & Bailey) will lead the cast of Gentleman Jack (formerly known as Shibden Hall), in the forthcoming BBC One/HBO drama series created, written and directed by Sally Wainwright (To Walk Invisible, Last Tango In Halifax, Happy Valley).
Gentleman Jack is a Lookout Point production for the BBC, co-produced with HBO.
The Bafta award-winning Suranne Jones will star as Anne Lister, the remarkable landowner who - after years of exotic travel and social climbing - returns to Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1832, determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall. The series will be the latest collaboration between Suranne and Sally, following their previous work together on Dead Clever, Unforgiven, and Scott & Bailey.

Suranne Jones says: "I first worked with Sally 10 years ago and I remember the feeling of reading her scripts like it was yesterday. They were scripts for women; fresh, daring and bizarre in a wonderful, modern, fun, complex and challenging way. Now I once again get to speak the words of an almighty talent on a show I know she holds close to her heart.

"To have Sally direct me on this feels like I'll finally get to work on a project with her where the connection will be immediate, exciting and new each day, and we can enjoy that amazing ride together! I'm thrilled to be back at the BBC with this role and to be joining the Lookout Point and HBO family."

Sally Wainwright says: "I am delighted to be working with Suranne once again, not just as a writer this time, but as a director. Bringing Anne Lister to life with all her complexity, passion, brilliance and wit is an epic challenge that will require all the boldness, subtlety, energy and humour that I know only Suranne will bring to it."

To restore Shibden Hall to its former glory, Anne must re-open her coal mines and marry well. But this isn't just another Regency romance. Charismatic, single-minded, swashbuckling Anne Lister - who dressed head-to-foot in black and charmed her way into high society - has no intention of marrying a man. True to her own nature, she plans to marry a woman. And not just any woman: the woman Anne Lister marries must be seriously wealthy.

Every part of Anne's story is based in historical fact, recorded in the four million words of her diaries that contain the most intimate details of her life, once hidden in a secret code that is now broken.
Gentleman Jack is a remarkable and unlikely love story set in the complex, changing world of Halifax - the cradle of the industrial revolution - just as it's all kicking off. The drama will explore Anne Lister's relationships at home with her family, her servants, her tenants and her industrial rivals, who will use any dirty tricks they can to bring her down. At its heart is her relationship with her would-be wife, the wealthy heiress Ann Walker. It has all the warmth, wit, humour and complexity that audiences have come to associate with Sally Wainwright's writing.

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says: "Suranne is a screen actor of the highest calibre who brings wit, depth and attack to every character she plays. We are so fortunate to have her as our Anne. Sally's wonderful writing is in some very exciting hands."

Faith Penhale, Lookout Point Executive Producer, adds: "I can't think of anyone better to play the magnificent and mercurial Anne Lister - Suranne is one of Britain's most compelling screen actors; she is the perfect match for Sally's outstanding scripts and together they will create unforgettable television."

Gentleman Jack will begin filming next year, with further casting to be announced in due course. Suranne will next be seen on BBC One in the second series of Doctor Foster, airing this autumn.
The 8x60' series has been commissioned by Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, and Piers Wenger, Controller BBC Drama Commissioning.

It will be directed by Sally Wainwright, produced by Lookout Point for BBC One, and co-produced with HBO. Executive Producers are Sally Wainwright, Faith Penhale for Lookout Point, Piers Wenger for BBC One, and Francesca Orsi and Kathleen McCaffrey for HBO. The producer is Sanne Wohlenberg.

Suranne Jones is represented by Shepherd Management LTD in the UK and Grandview Management Corps in the US.
