"AFTER TRUTH: DISINFORMATION AND THE COST OF FAKE NEWS," A LOOK AT THE DAMAGING CONSEQUENCES OF THE RISE OF "FAKE NEWS" IN THE U.S. DEBUTS MARCH 19, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

AFTER TRUTH: DISINFORMATION AND THE COST OF FAKE NEWS, debuting THURSDAY, MARCH 19 (9:00-10:35 p.m. ET/PT), investigates the ongoing threat caused by the phenomenon of "fake news" in the U.S., focusing on the real-life consequences that disinformation, conspiracy theories and false news stories have on the average citizen. This documentary humanizes a phenomena that Americans will confront in the coming election cycle and for years to come.
The film will also be available on HBO On Demand, HBO NOW, HBO GO and partners' streaming platforms.

Directed by Andrew Rossi ("Page One: Inside the New York Times," HBO's "Le Cirque: A Table in Heaven") and executive produced by CNN's Brian Stelter, AFTER TRUTH features exclusive access to the victims and perpetrators of false news stories as well as a variety of experts and journalists who contextualize its impact and reinforce the importance of quality journalism.
The concern over disinformation and false news in our global information environment became ubiquitous after President Trump's victory in 2016, but the film shows that signs of the crisis were emerging well before the election.

AFTER TRUTH draws on a wealth of interview subjects to illuminate the issue from several angles while emphasizing the human toll in case studies. Subjects include: James Alefantis, owner of the D.C pizzeria embroiled in the "Pizzagate" conspiracy; Keith Alexander, Pulitzer Prize-winning crime reporter for The Washington Post; Harvard professor Yochai Benkler who deconstructs the concept of the "propaganda pipeline;" conservative political operative and self-professed user of "fake news" Jack Burkman; author and conspiracy theorist, Jerome Corsi; Oliver Darcy, senior media reporter for CNN; Adam Goldman, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter at The New York Times; University of Pennsylvania professor Kathleen Hall Jamieson; disinformation expert Molly McKew; Aaron Rich, brother of DNC staffer Seth Rich; Scott Shane, reporter for the New York Times; Will Sommer, tech reporter for The Daily Beast; Silicon Valley journalist Kara Swisher; Elizabeth Williamson, feature writer for The New York Times; and others.

AFTER TRUTH examines several incidents that have been impacted by "fake news:"
· In the summer of 2015, Jade Helm 15 - an eight-week military exercise in Bastrop, Texas - sparked a heated conspiracy among locals who believed President Obama was using the operation as a ruse to detain political dissidents. Promoted by Alex Jones, spread on sites like Reddit and 4chan and exacerbated by actions taken by the governor's office, which eventually assigned the state guard to monitor the exercise, the conspiracy was of great concern to intelligence and security experts who say it was stoked, in part, by covert Russian information activities targeting the U.S.
· In 2016, online speculation led to what would become known as "Pizzagate." A family pizza restaurant in Washington, D.C. became the target of vicious online conjecture that a child pornography ring with links to presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was being run on its premises. Known as a safe space for the queer community, Comet and its staff were increasingly terrorized online until the violence crossed into the physical world and an armed gunman burst into the restaurant looking for proof of the crimes. The Reddit-fueled furor, together with vocal attacks from Alex Jones, had in the gunman's eyes justified his response to the entirely falsified story.

· In 2016, Seth Rich, a Democratic National Committee employee, was killed in an attempted robbery. His murder was linked online to the leak of Hillary Clinton's emails to WikiLeaks, despite overwhelming proof that the Russians were behind the hacked server and leak, and no evidence that his murder was in any way connected. These claims were fueled by operatives like Jack Burkman and Jerome Corsi and broadcast on Fox News and Sean Hannity's prime time show.

· Attempting to undermine former FBI director Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and the Trump Administration, conservative operative Jack Burkman and conspiracy theorist Jacob Wohl teamed up to falsely accuse Mueller of sexual assault, staging a press conference in which journalists fight to get to the truth.

· In December 2017, certain activists on the left take on the tactics of their conservative counterparts, when during a senate race between Republican Roy Moore and Democrat Doug Jones, an online campaign was put in place to imitate Russian tactics to influence voters.

· In the Facebook congressional hearings in 2018, founder Mark Zuckerberg defended the website's privacy practices and data breaches, while news specialists debated the responsibility of media companies to police their own content in an age of huge advertising revenue and corporate profit, delving into the thorny issues of freedom of speech in our social media age.

In 2019, the FBI designated conspiracy theories like "Pizzagate" as a new domestic terrorism threat. The Bureau also warned about disinformation campaigns targeting the 2020 presidential election. Despite the warnings, the U.S. Senate has failed to pass legislation to increase election security. Educators, journalists and researchers continue to work to protect the facts in our information space.

AFTER TRUTH: DISINFORMATION AND THE COST OF FAKE NEWS is an HBO Documentary Films presentation of an Abstract Production; directed and produced by Andrew Rossi; executive producer Brian Stelter; co-producer, Adam McGill; editor, Cindy Lee; music Ian Hultquist; a film by Andrew Rossi. For HBO: executive producers, Lisa Heller and Nancy Abraham; senior producer, Sara Rodriguez.

NEW SERIES "BETTY" DEBUTS MAY 1, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

Based on Crystal Moselle's critically acclaimed feature "Skate Kitchen," HBO's new six-episode half-hour series BETTY, debuts FRIDAY, MAY 1 (11:00-11:30 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO.
The series will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and partners' streaming platforms.

Starring Dede Lovelace, Moonbear, Nina Moran, Ajani Russell, and Rachelle Vinberg, who all starred in the original film, BETTY follows a diverse group of young women navigating their lives through the predominantly male-oriented world of skateboarding, set against the backdrop of New York City.

Opinionated and loyal, Janay (Lovelace) is strong willed and stubborn in ways that both help and hurt her. Honeybear (Moonbear) is a quiet storm. Her flagrant style is a ruse; an armor she wears to hide her emotional struggles. Kirt (Moran) is a lover (to the ladies), a fighter (to the rest of the world), and a little kid in the body of a woman. She's the funniest person alive, but even if she knew it, she wouldn't care. Meanwhile, Indigo (Russell) is a street-savvy hustler trapped in the body of a well-to-do art school drop-out. On the edge of the group is Camille (Vinberg), guarded, perceptive, intelligent and awkward. She wants to be down with the dudes in the skate park and has fought hard for the small space she's carved out with them, but she needs to realize that cool points don't actually add up to the sum of anything, especially in the eyes of the other girls.

Recurring cast include Reza Nader as Farouk, Edmund Donovan as Bambi, Caleb Eberhardt as Donald, Katerina Tannenbaum as Ash, Jules Lorenzo as Yvette and Brenn Lorenzo as Celia.
BETTY is directed by Crystal Moselle; executive produced by Moselle, Lesley Arfin, Igor Srubshchik and Jason Weinberg; produced by Arfy Material and Untitled Entertainment.

ACADEMY AWARD NOMINEE RAOUL PECK BRINGS GROUNDBREAKING SERIES "EXTERMINATE ALL THE BRUTES" TO HBO

Academy Award nominee Raoul Peck ("I Am Not Your Negro," HBO's "Sometimes in April") teams up with HBO for EXTERMINATE ALL THE BRUTES, a four-part series that pushes the boundaries of traditional documentary filmmaking, offering an expansive exploration of the exploitative and genocidal aspects of European colonialism. From America to Africa, Peck deconstructs the making and masking of history through a personal voyage into some of the darkest hours of humanity. The series is based on three works by authors and scholars, Sven Lindqvist's Exterminate All the Brutes, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz's An Indigenous People's History of the United States and Michel-Rolph Trouillot's Silencing the Past.

EXTERMINATE ALL THE BRUTES artfully weaves together rich documentary footage and archival material, as well as dynamic animation and interpretive scripted scenes. The series aims to tell a sweeping story in which history, contemporary life and fiction are wholly intertwined.
"This project has been my biggest challenge so far," says Peck. "It forced me to question not only our common knowledge but also my own experience as a filmmaker. I'm excited that HBO is supporting that vision."

Josh Hartnett ("Pearl Harbor," "Black Hawk Down") will play the lead role in the scripted portions of the film.

EXTERMINATE ALL THE BRUTES is produced by Velvet Film. Emmy(R) winners Raoul Peck and Rémi Grellety serve as executive producers. Velvet Film and ICM Partners are handling the series' rights in international territories.

Created and executive produced by Armando Iannucci of "Veep," AVENUE 5 is set forty years in the future when traveling the solar system is no longer the stuff of sci-fi fantasy, but a booming, multibillion-dollar business. The series kicked off its nine-episode season January 19.

"Armando Iannucci and his team are masters of smart and incisive comedy, and the ensemble cast, brilliantly captained by Hugh Laurie, is second to none. We can't wait to see what's in store for our hapless heroes in season two."

To the end of season one and beyond (into season two)!"

HBO SPORTS(R) AND BAT BRIDGE ENTERTAINMENT PRESENT DOCUMENTARY "THE SCHEME," DEBUTING MARCH 31, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

The First-Person Account Of How 25-Year-Old Christian Dawkins Wound Up At The Center Of The Biggest Criminal Case In Collegiate Sports History Is Directed By Emmy(R)-Winner Pat Kondelis

World Premiere Set for this March at SXSW
The HBO Sports documentary film THE SCHEME, telling the revealing, no-holds-barred tale of Christian Dawkins, convicted in federal court in the biggest criminal case in collegiate sports history, debuts TUESDAY, MARCH 31 (9:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), exclusively on HBO, it was announced today by Peter Nelson, executive vice president, HBO Sports.

The film will also be available on HBO on Demand, HBO NOW, HBO GO and partners' streaming platforms.

The Bat Bridge Entertainment feature-length presentation is directed by Pat Kondelis, whose 2017 account of the Baylor University basketball scandal "Disgraced" won the Sports Emmy(R) Award for Outstanding Sports Documentary.

"The Christian Dawkins scandal is a tale of alleged inducements, payoffs, NCAA rules violations, federal criminal charges, and convictions," said Peter Nelson. "Director Pat Kondelis, in an unprecedented look, shines a light on the hidden underworld of big-time basketball recruiting through the eyes of a self-described 'entrepreneur' whose childhood big ambitions took him on the wildest ride of his life in a story still unfolding."

"This story is surprising in every way imaginable and goes far beyond the limits of a college recruiting scandal," says Pat Kondelis. "I'm extremely proud to partner with HBO Sports to tell the real story for the first time."

The film chronicles the extensive and unprecedented two-year undercover FBI investigation into college basketball corruption that came to a dramatic climax on September 26, 2017, when Adidas executives and assistant coaches at major college programs were arrested in a pay-for-play scheme. While no head coaches were charged, the federal government alleged that an unassuming and unknown 25-year-old man was part of a criminal enterprise that had infiltrated college basketball and funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars to steer recruits to prominent athletic programs. The man's name was Christian Dawkins.

Now, in THE SCHEME, Christian Dawkins faces the camera for the first time and explains in fascinating detail how a kid from Saginaw, Michigan ended up in a hotel suite surrounded by FBI agents with a warrant for his arrest.

Through revelation after revelation, viewers will learn how Dawkins was orchestrating massive cash payments to top high school prospects with the help of Adidas, and, unbeknownst to him, undercover FBI agents. Dawkins will disclose not only the facts of the scheme, but the context of the FBI investigation. Ultimately, guilty verdicts on a range of fraud and bribery charges would leave Dawkins with approximately eighteen months of prison time.

THE SCHEME provides a startling account that is the first instance of the federal government attempting to characterize the participation in NCAA rules violations as federal crimes, triggering enormous potential implications.

With interview subjects in addition to Dawkins including his parents; his attorney Steve Haney; journalists Dan Wetzel and Rebecca Davis O'Brien, combined with the use of news archival, video and audio evidence from the case, and a highly stylized presentation, viewers will be immediately drawn into this remarkable story told in a uniquely cinematic style.

HBO Sports has been recognized with nine George F. Peabody Awards and 36 Sports Emmy(R) Awards for documentary production excellence over the years.

HBO Sports presents THE SCHEME, a Bat Bridge Entertainment production in association with The Freetown Project. Pat Kondelis directs; executive producers Michael H. Rockafellow, Stephen L. Germer, Jody M. Wingrove, Rudy Cline Thomas and Pat Kondelis. Executive producers for HBO, Peter Nelson and Rick Bernstein; supervising producers, Bentley Weiner and Jonathan Crystal. Produced by Lynsey Tamsen Jones. Edited by Sean McQueeney. Original Music by Danny Bensi and Saunder Jurriaans.

HBO has acquired worldwide television and streaming rights to the documentary feature film SIEMPRE, LUIS, which had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
First-time filmmaker John James' film is an inspiring portrait of Luis A. Miranda Jr., a Puerto Rican migrant who helped shape New York politics for over three decades.

When Luis A. Miranda Jr. left Puerto Rico for New York City in the 1970s, he had big dreams, but little did he know how far he'd go. "My first film started as the story of a tireless migrant who built an extraordinary legacy," says filmmaker John James. We're excited to find a passionate partner in HBO to share this inspiring story."

"MY BRILLIANT FRIEND: THE STORY OF A NEW NAME," BASED ON THE SECOND BOOK IN ELENA FERRANTE'S QUADRILOGY, DEBUTS MARCH 16

Based on Elena Ferrante's second book of her four-part series, MY BRILLIANT FRIEND: THE STORY OF A NEW NAME, debuting MONDAY, MARCH 16 (10:00-11:00 p.m. ET/PT), follows Elena and Lila's journey into adulthood as they weather romance, heartbreak, success and betrayal.
The series will also be available on HBO NOW, HBO GO, HBO On Demand and partners' streaming platforms.

This season begins where the first season left off, with Lila newly - and unhappily - married to upper crust grocer Stefano Carracci (Giovanni Amura) and Elena (Margherita Mazzucco) unsure of her future, both romantically and academically. Believing she lost her own identity when she took her husband's name, Lila (Gaia Girace) is defiant in her marriage as their world continues to orbit around the Solara family, while model student Elena comes to realize that she is not happy inside or outside her neighborhood. During a holiday in Ischia, the two girls reunite with their old childhood acquaintance Nino Sarratore (Francesco Serpico), now a university student with great expectations. The seemingly random encounter will forever change the nature of their bond, projecting the girls into two completely different worlds. Lila becomes a skillful sales assistant in the elegant shoe shop in central Naples owned by the powerful Solara family, and Elena obstinately continues her studies as she prepares to attend university in Pisa. As their worlds expand and they're forced to deal with more adult and complex problems, Elena and Lila fight to find their place in the rapidly changing Italy of the 60s, while their fraught relationship continues to vacillate between love and contempt.
The first season of MY BRILLIANT FRIEND received rave reviews when it debuted in 2018, with Time calling the series, "everything the adaptation of a great book should be," the Boston Globe hailing it as, "insightful and clear-eyed," and the Wall Street Journal declaring the show, "a stunning achievement."

HBO and Bill Simmons' The Ringer in Production on Music Documentary Series

HBO and Bill Simmons' The Ringer in Production on Music Documentary Series
Executive produced by Simmons, Polygram Entertainment and Universal Music Publishing Group executives Jody Gerson and Marc Cimino, the series is expected to air in 2021 on HBO as a special six-week event.

[via press release from HBO]
HBO AND BILL SIMMONS' THE RINGER IN PRODUCTION ON MUSIC DOCUMENTARY SERIES

Bill Simmons' The Ringer is collaborating with HBO to create a multi-part documentary film series rooted in the music world. The untitled six-film project will concentrate on pivotal moments or stretches for a popular artist or band, an iconic album or the music business as a whole, with each film helmed by a different director. Executive produced by Simmons, Polygram Entertainment and Universal Music Publishing Group executives Jody Gerson and Marc Cimino, the series is expected to air in 2021 on HBO as a special six-week event.

"It's been a dream of mine to put this project together," says Simmons. "It wasn't until I started working with Jody and Marc that the potential of it started to seem real. We see an opportunity to elevate the storytelling form with music docs much like '30 for 30' changed the landscape for sports documentaries at the end of last decade. We don't want to make music docs that just cover the beginning, middle and end of someone's career. We think there's a different way to do these. And we want to work with the best directors possible, talented filmmakers who have the same passion for this project that we do. I couldn't be more excited for the challenge. Being able to explore this with HBO is like the cherry on top."

"We've had a longtime collaboration with Bill, and we are thrilled that he came to HBO with this idea," says Casey Bloys, President HBO Programming. "We look forward to working with him and the team at The Ringer to illuminate many of the fascinating artists and moments that have shaped the music industry."

Jody Gerson, Chairman and CEO of UMPG, says: "This series is about storytelling for musicians in a way that has never really been done before. There are countless great artists and songwriters who have culturally-defining stories and, for the first time, we can share those intimately with fans around the world. Marc and I have been big fans of Bill's talent for storytelling for a long time, and we are thrilled to partner with him, The Ringer, HBO and Polygram Entertainment on this special project that will share the culturally defining stories of artists and songwriters."

Ringer Films is a division of Bill Simmons' The Ringer, a digital media company that focuses on sports, pop culture and tech commentary. Ringer Films' additional projects include HBO's upcoming WOMEN OF TROY, about the groundbreaking USC women's basketball team of the 1980s. Ringer Films is headed by Bill Simmons, who received three Sports Emmy(R) Awards and a Creative Arts Emmy while serving for six years (2009-15) as an executive producer of original film productions under ESPN's Peabody-Award-winning "30 for 30" banner. Simmons was a co-creator of the "30 for 30" series.

"Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes" Debuts February 11, Exclusively on HBO

"Ali & Cavett: The Tale of the Tapes" Debuts February 11, Exclusively on HBO
Between 1968 and 1979, boxing superstar Muhammad Ali appeared on the Emmy(R) winning "Dick Cavett Show" no less than 14 times.

[via press release from HBO]
"ALI & CAVETT: THE TALE OF THE TAPES," A VIBRANT PORTRAIT OF BOXING LEGEND MUHAMMAD ALI THROUGH THE LENS OF HIS FREQUENT APPEARANCES ON "THE DICK CAVETT SHOW," DEBUTS FEBRUARY 11, EXCLUSIVELY ON HBO

Between 1968 and 1979, boxing superstar Muhammad Ali appeared on the Emmy(R) winning "Dick Cavett Show" no less than fourteen times. With natural charisma, quick wit and playful pugnacity, Ali was a perfect foil for the sophisticated broadcast host, and together they struck television gold. Whether discussing his prowess in the ring, the status of race relations in America or his controversial decision to refuse induction into the army during the Vietnam War, Ali was an entertaining and provocative guest.

Interweaving clips from the show with new insight from Dick Cavett himself, as well as expert commentary from authors, sports commentators and civil rights activists, ALI & CAVETT: THE TALE OF THE TAPES, debuting TUESDAY, FEB. 11 (9:00-10:40 p.m. ET/PT), is a fascinating time capsule in which the issues of the era play out between two men who formed an unlikely and enduring bond.

The film will also be available on HBO On Demand, HBO NOW, HBO GO and partners' streaming platforms.

The world first heard of Muhammad Ali, then known by his birth name Cassius Clay, when he won the light heavyweight gold medal at the 1960 Rome Olympics as an 18-year-old boxing prodigy. He decided to use his newfound fame to bring America's attention to racial, religious and political injustice, and elicited difficult conversations about these issues in American homes.
Appearing on "The Dick Cavett Show," Ali found a willing sparring partner in the intelligent, eponymous host. Ali's jocular manner proved to be a successful formula in discussing matters that were usually off limits on other talk shows. "He would say things to Cavett about whites that you'd hear on the street corners of Harlem," remarked civil rights activist Rev. Al Sharpton. "They seemed to go to the edge of the racial debate in the country."

In 1967, citing religious and moral objections, Ali refused to serve in the Vietnam War and was convicted and stripped of his heavyweight title. Facing years in prison, he appealed all the way to the Supreme Court where his conviction was overturned, but by that point, Ali had been unable to fight professionally for three years. During this time, he was a frequent guest on "The Dick Cavett Show," where he engaged in deep conversations about his identity, his political and religious views and social issues. "There was a period in my life when I felt that Muhammad Ali was my best friend," reminisces Cavett, who praises his ability to bridge cultural and racial divides.
When he returned to fighting in 1970, Ali played for big money and big crowds. Win or lose, he was always welcomed back by Cavett. "You are really my main man, because this is the only show that invites me right after I get whipped," Ali joked about his jaw broken from a clash with Ken Norton. Legendary fights with Joe Frazier and George Foreman followed, and Ali's flamboyance outside the ring was matched only by his bravura in it. Over the next decade, Ali would make boxing history, becoming the first three-time heavyweight world champion.

ALI & CAVETT: THE TALE OF THE TAPES includes insightful interviews from an array of experts who shed light on Ali's legacy, including: Civil Rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton, sportswriter and longtime commentator for HBO World Championship Boxing Larry Merchant, Ali biographer Thomas Hauser, columnist Juan Williams, and author Ilyasah Shabazz. Archival interviews from "The Dick Cavett Show" include Ali's former trainer Angelo Dundee and boxing champions Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Robinson and Joe Frazier.

More than just a nostalgic trip down memory lane, ALI & CAVETT: THE TALE OF THE TAPES also stands as a window into our present world, exploring how Ali came to symbolize something greater than boxing. By the time he carried the Olympic torch at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, his hand trembling from Parkinson's disease, Ali's legacy was immortalized as a beacon of equality and political conviction, a true champion whose impact on the Civil Rights movement and the world rivals his feats in the boxing ring.

HBO Documentary Films and Cavalier Films present ALI & CAVETT: THE TALE OF THE TAPES, directed by Robert S. Bader; written by Robert S. Bader and Dick Cavett; produced by Robert S. Bader, Bay Dariz and Allan Falk; edited by Robert S. Bader and Oliver Thompson.
