ABC’s ‘Castaways’ Improves Its Hour Year Over Year by 67% in Adults 18-49
ABC Tuesday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 3.6 million and 0.9/4 in AD18-49):
Featuring “Bachelor in Paradise” and “Castaways,” ABC took 2nd place on Tuesday in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4) to an “America’s Got Talent”- led NBC. ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” finished as Tuesday’s No. 2 TV show in Adults 18-49, closing the gap week to week with NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” by 3-tenths of a ratings point for No. 1 (-0.7 this week vs. -1.0 last week).  In addition, ABC’s “BIP” beat the NBC unscripted series to straight outrank as the night’s highest-rated TV show with Women 18-34.
  • Opposite “AGT” from 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” advanced for the 3rd straight Tuesday in Total Viewers (+3% – 4.1 million vs. 4.0 million) and held even with Adults 18-49 (1.1/5), marking its most-watched Tuesday telecast this season.
 
  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Castaways” held even week to week in Total Viewers (2.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (0.5/3), earning 2nd in its hour to NBC’s “Making It” among young adults.  “Castaways” dramatically improved its time slot for ABCfrom the same night last summer with original programming (“Somewhere Between” on 8/29/17), spiking by 60% in Total Viewers (2.4 million vs. 1.5 million) and by 67% in Adults 18-49 (0.5/3 vs. 0.3/1).

  • From 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” qualified as Monday’s No. 1 TV series for the 3rd week in a row with Adults 18-49, defeating NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” head to head in the 2-hour slot by 10% (1.2/6 vs. 1.1/5).  In addition, “BIP” repeated as the night’s highest-rated broadcast show in Adults 18-34, across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54) and Men 18-34 (tie). The ABC unscripted series remained even with the prior Monday in Total Viewers (4.6 million) and held steady in Adults 18-49 (1.2/6 vs. 1.3/6).

  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Proposal” season finale built 4% week to week in Total Viewers (2.4 million vs. 2.3 million) and held steady with its week-earlier Adult 18-49 number (0.5/2 vs. 0.6/2), which adjusted down 1-tenth in the Nationals (0.5/2).

ABC Sunday Prime Time (7:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.0 million and 0.9/4 in AD18-49):
Up against NBC’s NFL coverage on the night, ABC’s “Sunday Fun & Games” lineup improved across the board and made the Network the non-sports leader on Sunday in viewers (5.0 million) and young adults (0.9/4).

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “Celebrity Family Feud” returned to original with gains, building on its last first-run airing two weeks ago by 9% in Total Viewers (6.3 million vs. 5.8 million) and by 10% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/5 vs. 1.0/5), marking its most-watched telecast in 6 weeks – since 7/15/18.  ABC’s “CFF” stood as Sunday’s most-watched entertainment program.



  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “The $100,000 Pyramid” grew by double digits week to week in Total Viewers (+13% – 5.1 million vs. 4.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (+13% – 0.9/4 vs. 0.8/3), hitting a 6-week high in viewers and a 5-week high with young adults – since 7/15/18 and 7/22/18, respectively. “The $100,000 Pyramid” shot up from its year-ago telecast on the night at 10:00 p.m. by 24% in viewers and by 50% in young adults.

  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “To Tell the Truth” built week to week by 15% in Total Viewers (3.9 million vs. 3.4 million) and by 33% in Adults 18-49 (0.8/4 vs. 0.6/3) to its best numbers since mid-July – since 7/15/18 and 7/22/18, respectively. “To Tell the Truth” also topped its year-ago telecast (on Monday, 8/28/17 at 10:00 p.m.) by 34% in viewers and by 14% in young adults.

ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” stood as Tuesday’s No. 2 TV show in Adults 18-49, behind only NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” and tied NBC’s top-rated unscripted series as the night’s No. 1 show with Women 18-34.

  • Opposite “AGT” from 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” grew over the prior Tuesday in both Total Viewers (+2% – 4.0 million vs. 3.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (+10% – 1.1/5 vs. 1.0/5) to draw its largest audience on the night this season.

 

  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Castaways” held even week to week in Adults 18-49, earning the No. 2 position in its hour (0.5/3-tie) to NBC’s “Making It.” In addition, “Castaways” improved its timeslot for ABCover the year-ago night with original programming (“Somewhere Between” on 8/22/17) by 56% in Total Viewers (2.5 million vs. 1.6 million) and by 25% in Adults 18-49 (0.5/3 vs. 0.4/2).

  • From 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” stood as Monday’s No. 1 TV show for the 2nd consecutive week in Adults 18-49, beating out NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” by 30% head-to-head in the 2-hour slot (1.3/6 vs. 1.0/5). In addition, “BIP” repeated as the night’s top-rated show in Adults 18-34 and across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54), while also moving up to the No. 1 position this week in Adults 25-54 (tie) and Men 18-34. The ABC unscripted series rose over the prior Monday (8/13/18) in Total Viewers (+4% – 4.7 million vs. 4.5 million) and held even in Adults 18-49 (1.3/6) to deliver the show’s biggest audience this season on either Monday or Tuesday.



  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Proposal” ranked No. 1 in its hour among Adults 18-49 (0.6/3-tie), holding even with its week-earlier Fast Affiliate rating and building on its National rating by 20%.

‘Nightline’ Beats CBS’ ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 for the Week of August 6

Season to Date, ‘Nightline’ Leads CBS’ ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (1.216 million) during the week of Aug. 6, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. Taking the top spot for the 2nd straight week, “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (1.126 million) by 90,000 and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (1.155 million) by 61,000.

“Nightline” (418,000 and 316,000, respectively) also led CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (366,000 and 270,000,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+52,000) and Adults 18-49 (+46,000).  

For the 2nd week in a row, “Nightline” improved on the previous week (w/o 7/30/18) in Adults 25-54 (+1% – 418,000 vs. 412,000), drawing its best news demo performance in 4 weeks – since w/o 7/9/18.

“Nightline” cut its Adults 18-49 gap with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” from the prior week by 33% (37,000 vs. 55,000 for w/o 7/30/18). 

“Nightline” slashed its year-to-year margins (w/o 8/7/17) with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in Adults 25-54 (-53% – 56,000 vs. 119,000) and Adults 18-49 (-73% – 37,000 vs. 135,000).

Season to date, “Nightline” is beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+32,000 – 495,000 vs. 463,000) and Adults 18-49 (+31,000 – 374,000 vs. 343,000). 

Stories on “Nightline” last week included a man’s fight to be allowed to post blueprints for 3-D printed guns online; a look at ‘QAnon,’ a conspiracy theory that has gained mainstream attention; the search for Mollie Tibbetts who disappeared after being last seen while running along the streets of Brooklyn, Iowa; a trip to Azores, Portugal, to go inside the competition with the world’s most elite cliff divers; and concerns being raised by doctors about the new trend of patients wanting to look like retouched, picture-perfect versions of themselves. 

NOTE: Due to PGA Championship highlights on Thursday (8/9/18) and Friday (8/10/18), CBS’ The Late Late Show with James Corden” was retitled to “The Late Late Show – JC.” Each telecast is excluded from the weekly averages.  CBS’ weekly averages are based on three days (Mon-Wed).

On Monday

With its 3-hour broadcast of the 2018 “CMA Fest,” ABC finished as the most-watched network on Wednesday night, topping runner-up NBC with 2 hours of “World of Dance” by nearly 1.0 million viewers (4.7 million vs. 3.8 million) and nearly tying Fox for No. 1 in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 1.0/5 from 8:00-10:00 p.m. with “MasterChef”/”24 Hours to Hell and Back”). 

In viewers and young adults, the “CMA Fest” produced ABC’s top summertime non-sports numbers on the night in 1 year – since 8/16/17.

‘Castaways’ Debuts to 2-Year Summertime Slot Highs on Tuesday at 10 p.m.

ABC Tuesday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 3.6 million and 0.9/4 in AD18-49):
Featuring the season opener of “Bachelor in Paradise” and series debut of “Castaways,” ABC moved up to take 2nd place on Tuesday in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4) to an “America’s Got Talent”-led NBC, while beating Fox’s original lineup by 80% (0.5/2 for “Beat Shazam”/”Love Connection”). Trailing only NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” on the night, ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” ranked as Tuesday’s No. 2 TV show in Adults 18-49 and tied “AGT” as the No. 1 show with Women 18-34.

  • From 8:00-10:00 p.m. opposite NBC’s “AGT,” ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” more than doubled Fox’s unscripted combo of “Beat Shazam”/”Love Connection” in the 2-hour slot with Total Viewers (+111% – 3.8 million vs. 1.8 million) and Adults 18-49 (+120% – 1.1/5 vs. 0.5/2). “Bachelor in Paradise” held even with its year-ago Tuesday premiere in Adults 18-49 (1.1/5 on 8/15/17).



  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Castaways” debuted to summer highs for ABC in the time period with Total Viewers (3.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (0.7/3). In fact with viewers and young adults, “Castaways” turned in ABC’s strongest summertime (Memorial Day-Labor Day) entertainment numbers in the Tuesday 10 o’clock hour in more than 2 years– since 7/12/16.

‘The View’ Outperforms ‘The Talk’ Across the Board Increasing Its Week to Week Lead Over the CBS Program in Women 25-54 and Women 18-49 

For the 2017-18 Season, ‘The View’ Delivers Its Largest Season Leads Over ‘The Talk’ in Total Viewers and Women 25-54 in 5 Years

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.625 million Total Viewers, 423,000 Women 25-54 and 276,000 Women 18-49 during the week of July 30, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” beat CBS’ “The Talk” (2.355 million, 351,000 and 243,000, respectively) across the board: Total Viewers (270,000), Women 25-54 (73,000) and Women 18-49 (33,000). In addition, “The Viewer” increased its lead over “The Talk” week to week (w/o 7/23/18) in Women 25-54 (+26%; vs. 57,000) and Women 18-49 (+94%; vs. 17,000).   

 
For the 2017-18 season, “The View” posted gains compared to the previous season in Total Viewers (+1% – 2.856 million vs. 2.815 million), marking its most-watched season in 4 years – since the 2013-2014 season. 



In addition, “The View” leads CBS’ “The Talk” and is increasing its advantages from the same point last season in Total Viewers (346,000 vs. 187,000), Women 25-54 (80,000 vs. 55,000) and Women 18-49 (53,000 vs. 52,000). In fact, “The View” is posting its largest season leads over the CBS program in Total Viewers and Women 25-54 in 5 years – since the 2012-2013 season.

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (1.217 million) during the week of July 30, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” led CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (1.063 million) by 154,000 and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (1.154 million) by 63,000.

“Nightline” (412,000 and 318,000, respectively) also beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (324,000 and 235,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+88,000) and Adults 18-49 (+83,000).   

“Nightline” posted double-digit, week-to-week gains (1.070 million, 369,000 and 278,000, respectively, for w/o 7/23/18) across the board: Total Viewers (+14%), Adults 25-54 (+12%) and Adults 18-49 (+14%), drawing its largest overall audience in 8 weeks – since w/o 6/4/18.

“Nightline” improved year to year (1.110 million and 290,000, respectively, w/o 7/31/17) in Total Viewers (+10%) and Adults 18-49 (+10%).

“Nightline” cut its Adults 25-54 margin with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” by 11% (52,000 vs. 80,000). 

“Nightline” narrowed its year-to-year margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” by double digits in Adults 25-54 (-45% – 52,000 vs. 95,000) and Adults 18-49 (-58% – 55,000 vs. 131,000). 

Season to date, “Nightline” is beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+32,000 – 496,000 vs. 464,000) and Adults 18-49 (+31,000 – 375,000 vs. 344,000). 

Stories on “Nightline” last week included an examination of “mommy-shaming”; the sentencing of Penn State frat member Ryan Burke in connection to criminal charges related to the death of Tim Piazza; the continuing protests in Minneapolis after no charges were filed in the fatal police shooting of Thurman Blevins; a report on suspected murderer Danueal Drayton who used dating apps to target his alleged victims; a look inside the effort to rescue, rehabilitate and return manatees to the wild; and an interview with radio host Dave Ramsey who went from rock-bottom debt to becoming a financial guru.

NOTE:  On Thursday (8/2/18), CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” was retitled to “The Late Late Show –JC-ENC.” The telecast is excluded from the weekly averages. CBS’ averages are based on four days (Monday–Wednesday and Friday).

ABC Wins Monday by 100% With ‘The Bachelorette’ Finale Scoring Season Highs

ABC Monday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 6.7 million and 1.8/8 in AD18-49): 

Winning all 6 half-hours of the night with “The Bachelorette” 3-hour Season 14 finale, ABC dominated runner-up NBC on Monday by 2.0 million viewers (6.7 million vs. 4.7 million) and doubled it among Adults 18-49 (+100% – 1.8/8 vs. 0.9/4), taking the young adult broadcast lead for the 9th week in a row this summer. “The Bachelorette” closed out as Monday’s No. 1 TV program in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, standing as the No. 1 series on the night on each telecast of the season with young adults (11 consecutive weeks).

ABC scored its top-rated Monday in almost 5 months with Adults 18-49 – since 3/12/18.

ABC’s “The Bachelorette” finale (6.7 million and 1.8/8 from 8-11pm) outpaced the No. 2 TV program on the night by season-best margins, beating out NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” (5.0 million and 1.0/5 from 8-10pm) by 33% in Total Viewers and 80% in Adults 18-49. 

Shooting up week to week in Total Viewers (+22%) and Adults 18-49 (+38%), “The Bachelorette” closed out with season highs on both measures.

ABC won Sunday night in both Total Viewers (4.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (0.8/4), with “Sunday Fun & Games” making it the No. 1 broadcaster on each week this summer the block has aired with young adults.

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “Celebrity Family Feud” returned to original, topping its hour for its 7th straight first-run airing to stand as Sunday’s most-watched entertainment show in Total Viewers (5.8 million) and take 2nd with Adults 18-49 (1.0/5) to CBS’ “Big Brother.” 



  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “The $100,000 Pyramid” grew over its year-ago telecast(on 8/6/17 in the 10:00 p.m. hour) for the 4th week in a row in both Total Viewers (+9% – 4.9 million vs. 4.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (+14% – 0.8/4 vs. 0.7/3). The ABC game show finished as the most-watched TV program in its hour for its 7th consecutive original telecast and led for the 2nd straight week in Adults 18-49.  

  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “To Tell the Truth” marked its 7th original airing in a row as the most-watched show in its hour (3.8 million) and also won with young adults (0.7/3), gaining 3% week to week in Total Viewers and holding even with Adults 18-49.
