LOS ANGELES – February 04, 2020 – THE KINGMAKER, nominated for a Critics’ Choice Best Documentary Feature Award and a WGA Award for Best Documentary Screenplay, will have its television debut Friday, February 28 at 9 p.m. ET/PT on SHOWTIME. Written and directed by Emmy winner Lauren Greenfield (Generation Wealth, The Queen of Versailles, Thin), the critically acclaimed feature from SHOWTIME Documentary Films presents a searing portrait of Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines whose behind-the-scenes machinations in the political careers of her husband, and later her son, cemented her indelible mark on the global political stage. THE KINGMAKER was named to several 2019 “Best Of” lists during its theatrical run last fall and premiered to sold-out audiences at prestigious film festivals across the world, including the Venice Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and BFI London Film Festival.
Featuring intimate access, including one-on-one interviews and verité footage with Imelda Marcos, THE KINGMAKER tells her story as a powerful female leader who changed history and divided a nation. From her current political project – guiding her son Bongbong in his bid for the vice presidency – audiences understand how in her late 80s, Imelda continues to rewrite her family’s history of corruption, replacing it with a narrative of a matriarch’s extravagant love for her country. In an age when “fake news” manipulates elections, the Marcos family’s comeback story serves as a cautionary tale.
THE KINGMAKER is produced by Frank Evers and Lauren Greenfield of Evergreen Pictures for SHOWTIME. R.J. Cutler, Geralyn Dreyfous, Julie Parker Benello, Dan Cogan, Bill Haney, Lilly Hartley, Patricia Lambrecht, Nion McEvoy, Vinnie Malhotra, Patty Quillin, Regina K. Scully, Jamie Wolf serve as executive producers.

Centered on the indomitable character of Imelda Marcos, THE KINGMAKER examines with intimate access the Marcos family’s improbable return to power in the Philippines. The film explores the disturbing legacy of the Marcos regime and chronicles Imelda’s present-day push to help her son, Bongbong, win the vice-presidency. To this end, Imelda confidently rewrites her family’s history of corruption, replacing it with a narrative of a matriarch’s extravagant love for her country. In an age when fake news manipulates elections, the Marcos family’s comeback story serves as a dark fairy tale. The film has been called a “hidden gem” by The Hollywood Reporter, “jaw-dropping” by Variety and “brilliant contextualization” by POV Magazine.

Showtime Documentary Films Announces "The Kingmaker" from Emmy(R) Winning Director Lauren Greenfield

SHOWTIME DOCUMENTARY FILMS ANNOUNCES 'THE KINGMAKER' FROM EMMY WINNING DIRECTOR LAUREN GREENFIELD

Documentary About The Marcos Family’s Political Reign In The Philippines
Will Have World Premiere At Venice Film Festival
LOS ANGELES – August 7, 2019 – Today, SHOWTIME Documentary Films announced that the latest feature from Emmy winning director Lauren Greenfield (The Queen of Versailles), THE KINGMAKER, will have its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival this August. The documentary centers on the indomitable character and controversial political career of Imelda Marcos, the former first lady of the Philippines whose behind-the-scenes influence of her husband Ferdinand’s presidency rocketed her to the global political stage. THE KINGMAKER will screen at additional festivals in the upcoming months, followed by a theatrical release this fall and a world television premiere on SHOWTIME in early 2020.
Written and directed by Greenfield, the award-winning director of Generation Wealth and The Queen of Versailles, THE KINGMAKER explores and exposes the Marcos family’s long history of corruption, extravagance and brutality, including Calauit Island, a safari park that favors the well-being of its exotic animals to the detriment of the people living there. Featuring unprecedented access, including one-on-one interviews and verite footage with Imelda Marcos, THE KINGMAKER tells her story as a powerful female leader who left an indelible mark on history and divided a nation. From her current political project – guiding her son Bongbong in his bid for the vice presidency – audiences understand how at age 90, Imelda Marcos continues to influence the revival of authoritarianism in the Philippines.
“The story of Imelda Marcos, past and present, has achieved an exceptional level of relevance in THE KINGMAKER,” said Vinnie Malhotra, Executive Vice President, Nonfiction Programming, Showtime Networks Inc. “Lauren Greenfield’s tireless efforts give dimension to a figure who has at once fascinated and vexed not only the people of the Philippines, but people worldwide. The result is as riveting as it is enlightening.”
THE KINGMAKER is produced by Frank Evers of Evergreen Pictures for SHOWTIME. Julie Parker Benello, Dan Cogan, R.J. Cutler, Geralyn Dreyfous, Bill Haney, Lilly Hartley, Patricia Lambrecht, Nion McEvoy, Regina K. Scully, Jeffrey Tarrant and Jamie Wolf serve as executive producers.
