Manhunt: UNABOMBER, Episode 5 – “Abri”
Premieres Tuesday, August 22 at 10 PM ET/PT on Discovery
After reading the Unabomber’s Manifesto, David Kaczynski sends a sample of his brother Ted’s writing to the FBI for a comparative analysis.  Fitz believes that Ted is the Unabomber and takes extreme steps to gather the proof he needs to convince his bosses at the UTF that he has their man.

Long Synopsis
In 1996, David Kaczynski wrestles with a dilemma.  His wife Linda has read the Unabomber’s published Manifesto, and she strongly believes the ideas and writing match those of David’s brother, Ted.  David finally agrees to submit a sample of Ted’s writing to the FBI for analysis, but only under the condition of strict anonymity.  David is relieved to receive a call stating that the letter he submitted is not a match and Ted is cleared as a suspect.

Meanwhile, Fitz is living at home in Pennsylvania and working at the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the FBI.  But instead of feeling happy to be with Ellie and his sons, Fitz remains obsessed with the UNABOM case.  Fitz has Tabby secretly fax him the voluminous writing samples the UTF receives in the wake of the Manifesto’s publication.  Tabby discovers the letter that David sent in; though it has been ruled out by the UTF forensics lab, Tabby violates orders and sends it to Fitz.  Fitz instantly senses the common authorship and breaks protocol by going to confront David Kaczynski.  After much convincing, David agrees that Ted is the Unabomber and gives Fitz all of Ted’s letters and writings he has saved over the years.

Fitz leaves his wife and returns to Natalie with all of the Ted-authored documents.  After a night of linguistic analysis, they conclude definitively that Ted is the Unabomber.  In the wake of this triumph, they share a kiss; but Fitz, still absorbed by the case, pulls away.  Fitz charges into the UTF to present his findings and manages to convince Ackerman, Cole, and Genelli that Ted Kaczynski is indeed the Unabomber.  However, Ackerman realizes that Tabby violated orders when she sent Ted’s letter to Fitz, and fires her.  Fitz continues his analysis of Ted’s writings alone, having alienated all of the people in his life who care for him.

Manhunt: UNABOMBER – Episode 4, “Publish or Perish”
Premieres Tuesday, August 15 at 10 PM ET/PT on Discovery
In 1995, the Unabomber offers to stop bombing if his Manifesto is published. Fitz puts everything on the line to push for publication, devising a massive operation to uncover the Unabomber’s identity.

SNEAK PEEK VIDEO CLIP – EPISODE 4, FOR POSTING ONLINE:Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uwbawnI6lcI

Long Synopsis
The Unabomber comes to the FBI with a proposal: If a national periodical will publish his Manifesto in full, he will agree to stop bombing. Ackerman wrestles with this moral dilemma, as he must give Attorney General Janet Reno a recommendation. Fitz pushes for publication, as he believes a friend of the Unabomber will recognize his unique ideology and idiosyncratic writing style. Cole insists that the FBI does not negotiate with terrorists.

Meanwhile, Fitz’s wife Ellie visits from Pennsylvania. Fitz has been distracted by his work on the Unabom case and the two of them try to reconnect, with limited success.

When one of the UTF’s few active leads in proves to be a dead end, Ackerman challenges Fitz to come up with one more reason to publish the Manifesto which could produce a new lead. Fitz suggests they publish it in the Washington Post, only sold at one location in the Bay Area, and mount a massive sting operation to follow and investigate every person who purchases that issue of the Washington Post. Ackerman presents this plan to Janet Reno, who gives her blessing. The FBI mounts the massive operation, the largest surveillance operation in FBI history. On publication day, Tabby tails a suspect who seemingly matches Fitz’s profile. But when that lead, too, is a dead end, Fitz is fired from the UTF and sent home in disgrace. There is a ray of hope, however, as a woman in Paris reads the Manifesto and recognizes something very familiar about it.

Manhunt: UNABOMBER – Episode 3, “Fruit of the Poisonous Tree”
Tuesday, August 8 at 10 PM ET/PT on Discovery
In 1995, Fitz works with linguist Natalie Rogers to find more clues about the Unabomber’s identity in the Manifesto, but Fitz’s conclusions face deep skepticism at the UTF. In 1997, Ted claims that he can invalidate all of the evidence the FBI has against him.

Long Synopsis
In 1995, Fitz has reached a dead end in his study of the Manifesto. He calls in a panel of academic experts to help with his analysis, but their petty biases prevent any of them from having useful insights, except for one: Natalie Rogers, a Stanford grad student in Comparative Linguistics.  Natalie and Fitz connect both personally and professionally, and what they discover together provides many clues that hone Fitz’s profile of the Unabomber.  Fitz presents his discoveries to the heads of the UTF.  While many of his findings jibe with the previous investigation, Fitz’s conclusion about the age of the Unabomber -- several years older and much better educated than Ackerman, Cole, and Genelli believe -- eliminates all of the current suspects.  Unwilling to be flexible about his conclusions, Fitz’s intransigence costs him political currency within the UTF.  Then, the case takes a shocking turn when, in a flurry of new letters, the Unabomber reveals that he wants to broker a deal with the FBI.
In 1997, Fitz again confronts Ted, this time taking an aggressive position: there is a mountain of evidence that proves Ted’s guilt, so much so that Ted’s best option is to plead guilty.  But Ted mounts a powerful counter-attack: all of the evidence against him was found because of a search warrant written by Fitz that used Fitz’s linguistic analysis to gain entry into Ted’s cabin.  Ted believes he can discredit Fitz’s credentials and analysis, rendering all of the evidence against him invalid -- “The Fruit of the Poisonous Tree.”  To his horror, Fitz realizes that Ted may be acquitted because of Fitz’s work.

DISCOVERY TELLS THE DRAMATIC AND GRIPPING TRUE STORY OF THE FBI’S HUNT FOR THE UNABOMBER

DISCOVERY TELLS THE DRAMATIC AND GRIPPING TRUE STORY OF THE FBI’S HUNT FOR THE UNABOMBER

Manhunt: UNABOMBER premieres Tuesday, August 1 at 9 PM ET/PT on Discovery

(LOS ANGELES) – On the heels of the broadcast success of HARLEY AND THE DAVIDSONS – TV’s best single-network miniseries in more than three years – Discovery will present an all-new scripted anthology series called Manhunt: UNABOMBER with a two-hour premiere airing Tuesday, August 1 at 9 PM ET/PT on the Discovery Channel.

Manhunt: UNABOMBER tells the dramatic and gripping true story of the FBI’s hunt for the Unabomber, the deadliest serial bomber in history. The story focuses on FBI Agent and Criminal Profiler Jim “Fitz” Fitzgerald (played by Sam Worthington of “Avatar” and “Hacksaw Ridge”), who pioneered the use of forensic linguistics to identify and ultimately capture the Unabomber, Ted Kaczynski (Paul Bettany, “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers” series and “A Beautiful Mind”). This series features both Bettany and Worthington’s first major leading roles on U.S. television.

As a fresh faced Criminal Profiler and the newest member of the Unabom Task Force (UTF), Fitz faced an uphill battle not just against the Unabomber – one of the most sophisticated and brilliant criminals in history – but also against the bureaucracy of the UTF itself as his maverick ideas and new approaches were dismissed by the system.

Manhunt: UNABOMBER is produced by John Goldwyn, serving as consultant to Discovery, Lionsgate, Discovery Channel and Trigger Street Productions. Emmy® Award-winning television producer and director Greg Yaitanes (“Quarry,” “Banshee”) will executive produce, direct and serve as showrunner and Andrew Sodroski, whose “Holland, Michigan” topped Hollywood’s famed Black List for screenplays in 2013, created the series and serves as an Executive Producer. Jim Fitzgerald will serve as Consulting Producer.

The all-star cast also includes Golden Globe® nominee Chris Noth (“The Good Wife,” “Sex In The City”) as character Don Ackerman, the Bay Area Divisional Head of the FBI, who supervises the UNABOM Task Force; Oscar nominee Keisha Castle-Hughes (“Roadies,” “Game of Thrones”) as Tabby, a street agent who partners with Fitz; Golden Globe® and two-time Emmy winner Jane Lynch (“Glee,” “Hollywood Game Night”) in the role of former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno; Mark Duplass (“Togetherness,” “Blue Jay”) as David Kaczynski, Ted’s younger brother; Michael Nouri (“Woman Walks Ahead,” “The Slap”) as Penthouse founder Bob Guccione; three-time Tony Award nominee Brian d'Arcy James (“Hamilton,” “Spotlight,” “13 Reasons Why”) playing ‘Henry Murray,’ a professor of Kaczynski’s at Harvard University; Trieste Kelly Dunn (“Blindspot,” “Banshee”) playing ‘Theresa Oakes,’ a librarian at the Lincoln Public Library; Elizabeth Reaser (“Mad Men” and “Young Adult”) in the role of ‘Ellie,’ Jim Fitzgerald’s wife; Ben Weber (“Sex and the City,” “Secret Life of the American Teenager”) as Andy Genelli, former head of the UNABOM Task Force; Jeremy Bobb (“The Knick,” “Godless”) as Stan Cole, a seasoned FBI agent and Ackerman’s “foul-mouthed pit bull”; Lynn Collins (“X-Men Origins: Wolverine”) as Natalie, a post-doc in linguistics at Stanford; Katja Herbers (“Manhattan,” “The Leftovers”), as Linda, David Kaczinski’s wife; and Brian F. O’Byrne (“Mildred Pierce,” “Aquarius”) as Frank McAlpine, the FBI’s master profiler and Fitzgerald’s professor who leads the Behavioral Analysis Unit.

Dodging New York City traffic, these lucky passengers will take on classic CASH CAB trivia en route to their destination. If they get stumped, pedestrians and friends can help them out via phone, text or social media shout outs. If these riders get three questions wrong, though, they're out on the street. Comedian David Steinberg (CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, INSIDE COMEDY, SEINFELD, and MAD ABOUT YOU) comes to the project and with All3Media's Lion USA will revamp the series as executive producers, with Robyn Todd as co-executive producer. COLD CASE ALASKA - In the largely untouched landscape of Alaska, people go missing at an eerily high rate with more missing people per capita than any other state. It's a place where people can vanish into the wilderness without a trace - with some disappearing because they want to, but many others missing because someone else wanted them to. These cases were originally handled by the Alaska Bureau of Investigation's Cold Case Unit. However, the unit was recently disbanded - leaving many of these missing person cases unsolved. Now Discovery will follow one man's search who will stop at nothing to find some answers. (M2 Pictures)

COOPER'S TREASURE - In the 1960s, the "Original 7" astronauts were both rock stars and daredevils. With movie star looks and a penchant for sports cars, Gordon Cooper was the youngest and the flashiest of the bunch. As a space pioneer, he first took orbit in Mercury-Atlas 9, setting a record that still holds today for the longest solo space flight in US history. During one of his key missions, while Cooper claimed to be scouring the globe for nuclear sites, he actually discovered something else: shipwrecks. Working for decades in secret, using the information he collected while orbiting the Earth, Cooper created a document that he thought could lead to unimaginable wealth - a treasure map from space. Before passing away, Cooper shared his secret with long-time friend Darrell Miklos with the hope that his exploration would continue and the treasure would ultimately be found. Miklos is now setting out on a personal quest to fulfill the legacy of his lost mentor, once and for all realizing Cooper's long-held dream and proving to the world that the mysterious documents hold the key for a new generation of explorers. (Ample and Amblin Television)
DARKNESS - Are you afraid of the Dark? This all-new series features one of the most advanced and comprehensive tests of mental and physical survival ever captured on television. Inspired by extreme training scenarios conducted by the U.S. Military, Department of Defense, and NASA, three strangers each episode will push themselves to their absolute limits in complete darkness - enduring days buried underground while navigating prehistoric cave systems, ancient subterranean cities and centuries-old abandoned mines. (Electus)

DEVIL'S CANYON - The Devil's Canyon area of British Columbia is home to the largest creek side gold deposit the world has ever seen. It's also one of the most hostile terrains for survival on the planet. Three extreme prospectors, Ben van der Valk, Boyce Goff and John Belcik take the biggest gamble of their lives as they journey into the most remote areas of the Canyon in search of their fortunes. Equipped with only the tools and food they can carry in on their backs, these skilled miners head deep into the forest where big mining companies can't reach. Once they arrive, they have a slim window of time to find as much gold as they can before winter hits. All three men are forced to constantly balance their relentless desire to hunt gold with their need to survive. Raging windstorms, bone-chilling rain and snow, falling trees, hypothermia and deadly bears all stand in the way between these miners and the find of a lifetime. (Magilla)

GOLD RUSH: PARKER'S TRAIL - Between 1896 and 1899, more than 100,000 brave souls set out on a perilous journey into the frozen North on the legendary Klondike Gold Rush trail. Most never made it to the end. Killed or scared off by bears, treacherous terrain, raging torrents and temperatures below -40 degrees, only one in three completed the journey. Now Parker Schnabel of Discovery GOLD RUSH fame, will attempt to make this same journey and document it. Parker comes from a family of gold miners, including his beloved grandpa, who inspired him to push himself beyond his limits. In honor of his grandpa's memory, he will now attempt one of the most dangerous challenges he's ever done by trekking across the Coastal Range - as winter closes in - from his home in Alaska to the fabled goldfields of the Klondike. This journey is in his blood and will follow in the footsteps of his forebears. (RAW Television)

But now he's making his biggest gamble yet - starting a new type of garage like no other. In addition to building amazing, one-of-a-kind cars, the series will follow the crew as they hunt down potential cars to flip in the most unlikely of places. All across Northern Washington, cars litter the landscape and the team will stop at nothing to find them. While some of the cars look unsalvageable - after years of deterioration from sitting deep in a forest - Carlos sees big potential, even if trees are growing right through them. But will he be able to hustle his way into the highly competitive business of car flipping and prove these vehicles are more than just a diamond in the rough? (Leftfield Pictures)

NEW DOCUMENTARY SPECIALS
BILLION OYSTER PROJECT (W/T) - On New York's Governor's Island, an unprecedented program has an ambitious goal: to restore once-bountiful oysters and the environmental benefits they bring to New York Harbor. What's more, the foot soldiers of this environmental movement are an unlikely group--high school students at a remarkable public school that teaches stewardship of the waterways alongside math and English. BILLION OYSTER PROJECT (working title) highlights the stories and work of these extraordinary students and their inspiring teachers as they persevere to turn the tide on decades of neglect and bring back the health of New York City waterways. Directed by Oscar(R) winner Roger Ross Williams and award-winning filmmaker Kristi Jacobson and produced by the Emmy(R) Award-winning producer Julie Goldman, the film will premiere on Discovery under the Discovery Impact banner. (Motto Pictures)

MOSQUITO - Mosquitos are the single greatest agent of death in modern human history. Today, rapid environmental shifts like climate change and the ease of international travel have only increased the threat mosquitos pose by hastening their spread around the globe. These changes are bringing diseases like Zika, dengue, and yellow fever to uncharted and unprepared parts of the world, from Brazil to Florida to New York, putting millions more lives at risk. Shot on four continents and featuring insights from some of the world's leading experts - including Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Tom Frieden and leadership from the World Health Organization - MOSQUITO sounds the alarm about this mounting global threat, and serves as a call to action for the immense international efforts that will be required to stop it in its tracks. This timely film dives deep into the unique biology of the mosquito, revealing its uncanny ability to adapt to and overcome efforts to control it, and presents new (and sometimes controversial) methods of eliminating the danger they pose. Directed by Su Rynard. (Yap Films)

NASA: 60 YEARS AND BEYOND - As this historic institution celebrates its 60th anniversary, Discovery once again shines a spotlight on NASA and the vital role it has to play moving forward into the coming decades. With wide-ranging access to NASA leaders and scientists, the film will chronicle the scope of NASA's work around the globe, to the farthest reaches of our solar system and galaxies. Academy Award(R)-nominated and Emmy(R)-winning filmmaker Rory Kennedy ("Last Days of Vietnam," takes her cameras behind the scenes of the world's greatest space agency, filming next-generation space telescopes, dazzling prototypes of Mars-bound spacecraft, and cutting-edge missions to better understand Earth, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. (Moxie Firecracker Films)
RANCHER FARMER FISHERMAN - An official selection of the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, RANCHER, FARMER, FISHERMAN weaves together the stories of four unlikely conservation heroes working in America's heartland. At a moment when it seems that collaboration is not just nonexistent but impossible, these working families cross political and other divides to arrive at real solutions for protecting the land and sea that define our country - and are crucial to all of our survival. From the Montana Rockies to the fields of Kansas to the Gulf of Mexico, RANCHER, FARMER, FISHERMAN showcases the successes of a new crop of conservation heroes. RANCHER, FARMER, FISHERMAN will premiere as part of Discovery Impact, a slate of groundbreaking documentaries focusing on humankind's impact on the environment and what individuals and society as a whole can do to solve some of the largest problems facing the planet. Narrated by award-winning journalist Tom Brokaw, and directed by Emmy(R)-winning and Oscar-nominated Froemke and Emmy(R)-winning filmmaker Hoffman, the film is based on Miriam Horn's book, "Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman: Conservation Heroes of the American Heartland." (McGee Media)

SACRED COD - Off the coast of New England, a historic cod fishery has been ravaged by overfishing, climate change, and government mismanagement. However, local fishermen are skeptical of the science and object to government policies that protect the fish but leave them fighting for their livelihoods. SACRED COD examines the complex collapse of one of the world's greatest commercial fisheries. SACRED COD is directed and produced by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist David Abel, Andy Laub, and Steve Liss. (Cody Wolf Productions)

[via press release from Discovery] BRIAN D'ARCY JAMES, TRIESTE KELLY DUNN AND ELIZABETH REASER JOIN DISCOVERY'S SCRIPTED ANTHOLOGY SERIES ABOUT THE INFAMOUS UNABOMBER
New Title Announced as 'Manhunt: The UNABOMer'

(LOS ANGELES and SANTA MONICA) - Discovery Channel announced that three-time Tony Award nominee Brian d'Arcy James ("Hamilton," "Spotlight," "13 Reasons Why"), Trieste Kelly Dunn ("Blindspot," "Banshee") and Elizabeth Reaser ("Mad Men" and "Young Adult") have been cast in the network's upcoming scripted series now titled "Manhunt: The UNABOMer," formerly known as "Manifesto," set to air this year. Produced by John Goldwyn, serving as consultant to Discovery, Lionsgate, Trigger Street Productions and Discovery Channel, the anthology series tells the story about the hunt for Ted Kaczynski, who terrified the nation with a letter bombing campaign in the 1980s and early 1990s. The new title reflects the name given by the original task force created by the FBI and ATF to investigate the "UNABOM" case, a combination of the words "University" and "Airline BOMber."

The series will tell the story of how FBI agent Jim "Fitz" Fitzgerald (Sam Worthington, "Avatar," "Hacksaw Ridge") deployed a radical approach to intelligence gathering to take down Kaczynski, portrayed by Paul Bettany ("Gangster No. 1," "Captain America: Civil War"). Emmy(R) Award-winning television producer and director Greg Yaitanes ("Quarry," "Banshee") will executive produce, direct and serve as showrunner. Andrew Sodroski, whose "Holland, Michigan" topped Hollywood's famed Black List for screenplays in 2013, created the series and serves as an Executive Producer. Jim Fitzgerald will serve as Consulting Producer.

James will play 'Henry Murray,' a professor of Kaczynski's at Harvard University, who convinced his young students to participate in mind control experiments supervised by the CIA. It's believed that these sessions, which were psychologically brutal and lasted for almost a year, were responsible for effectively weaponizing Kaczynski. Dunn will play 'Theresa Oakes,' a librarian at the Lincoln Public Library in Montana, who befriended Kaczynski and engaged him to tutor her 11-year-old son in math; and Reaser will play the role of 'Ellie,' Jim Fitzgerald's wife and the mother of their two children.

Discovery also announced Golden Globe(R) and two-time Emmy winner Jane Lynch ("Glee," "Hollywood Game Night") will play the role of former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno. Other cast includes Golden Globe(R) nominee Chris Noth ("The Good Wife," "Sex In The City") as character Don Ackerman, the Bay Area Divisional Head of the FBI, who supervises the UNABOM Task Force; Oscar nominee Keisha Castle-Hughes ("Roadies," "Game of Thrones") as Tabby, a street agent who partners with Fitz; Mark Duplass ("Togetherness," "Blue Jay") as David Kaczynski, Ted's younger brother; Michael Nouri ("Woman Walks Ahead," "The Slap") as Penthouse founder Bob Guccione; Ben Weber ("Sex and the City," "Secret Life of the American Teenager") as Andy Genelli, former head of the UNABOM Task Force; Jeremy Bobb ("The Knick," "Godless") as Stan Cole, a seasoned FBI agent and Ackerman's "foul-mouthed pit bull"; Lynn Collins ("X-Men Origins: Wolverine") as Natalie, a post-doc in linguistics at Stanford; Katja Herbers ("Manhattan," "The Leftovers"), as Linda, David Kaczinski's wife; and Brian F. O'Byrne ("Mildred Pierce," "Aquarius") as Frank McAlpine, the FBI's master profiler and Fitzgerald's professor who leads the Behavioral Analysis Unit. This series features both Bettany and Worthington's first major leading roles on U.S. television.

James was awarded the 2016 SAG Award, Critics Choice Award, Gotham Award and the Independent Spirit's Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble for his portrayal of Matt Carroll, one of the four critical members of the Boston Globe's Spotlight team opposite Michael Keaton, Mark Ruffalo and Rachel Mc Adams in the 2016 Best Picture Oscar winning film "Spotlight." He is a celebrated stage actor who has received three TONY nominations for his work on Broadway: Nick Bottom in the currently running hit musical "Something Rotten," "Shrek in Shrek the Musical" and Sidney Falco in "Sweet Smell of Success." In 2015 he also originated the role of King George in Lyn Manuel Miranda's "Hamilton" at New York's Public Theater. Additional Broadway credits include: the role of Banquo opposite Ethan Hawke in the Lincoln Center production of "Macbeth," starring alongside Laura Linney, Christina Ricci and Eric Bogosian in the hit play "Time Stands Still" and starring in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Next to Normal." Television fans know him most noticeably for his roles on NBC's "Smash," Showtime's "The Big C" and the Award-winning HBO movie "Game Change." He also appeared in the 2015 film "Sisters" with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. He has multiple projects in the works including Netflix's new TV show, "13 Reasons Why," and the feature films "Felt," "Molly's Game," "Song of Back and Neck," "1922" and "Trouble."
Dunn graduated with a BFA from the North Carolina School of the Arts. She can currently be seen recurring on NBC's "Blindspot" and in Bob Byingtons upcoming indie comedy "Infinity Baby" premiering at SXSW. TV credits include a series regular role on the Cinemax hit series "Banshee", and recurring and guest star roles on NBC's "Believe," "The Good Wife," "Almost There," "Golden Boy," "Brothers and Sisters," "Bored to Death" and "Canterbury's Law." Her leading roles in the following NY Times Critics pick indies are; "Applesauce," "Loves Her Gun," "Cold Weather," "The New Year," "Vacation!"
