Starz Acquires Unscripted Docuseries "America to Me" from Acclaimed Filmmaker Steve James and Participant Media

Starz Acquires Unscripted Docuseries "America to Me" from Acclaimed Filmmaker Steve James and Participant Media
The series follows students, teachers and administrators in suburban Chicago's Oak Park and River Forest High School, one of the country's most exemplary and diverse public schools.

Beverly Hills, Calif. - January 22, 2018 -Starz, a Lionsgate company (NYSE: LGF.A, LGF.B), today announced the premium cable network has acquired the unscripted 10-part docuseries "America to Me," created by award-winning filmmaker Steve James (Hoop Dreams, The Interrupters, Life Itself), and produced by Participant Media and Kartemquin Films.

"America To Me" follows students, teachers and administrators in suburban Chicago's Oak Park and River Forest High School, one of the country's most exemplary and diverse public schools, over the course of a year as they grapple with decades-long racial and educational inequities - in addition to the challenges that today's teenagers face. Digging deep into the experiences of a racially diverse student population, "America to Me" sparks extremely candid conversations about what has succeeded and what has failed in the quest to achieve racial equality and overcome bias in our education system. Part observational character story and part high school confessional, James captures critical moments within this vibrant high school ecosystem.

"We are thrilled to acquire this compelling docuseries from Participant Media and Steve James who, as a filmmaker, is truly one of the best," said President of Programming for Starz Carmi Zlotnik. "'America to Me' is extremely socially relevant and timely which exemplifies our diversity strategy. Steve's ability to bring the real and honest portrait of these students and the complex and compelling issues they face through this series is admirable."

Participant's CEO David Linde said, "As Participant continues to expand its global footprint with exciting new content opportunities, we are thrilled to announce this distribution partnership with Starz bringing 'America to Me,' our first documentary television series, to audiences everywhere."
The docuseries will premiere in Fall 2018 on STARZ and will also be available for download or streaming via the STARZ app which offers subscribers access to more than 7,000 selections including STARZ Originals "Power," "Outlander," "American Gods," "Counterpart," among others; as well as movies and television series.

"America to Me" is Participant Media's first unscripted series which aligns with the company's overall mission of telling compelling and impactful stories across multiple platforms. The series and accompanying social impact campaign aim to spark and guide a national conversation around race, education, opportunity and agency.

"In creating 'America to Me,' we were encouraged every day by the kids and their families, some truly dedicated teachers, and so many others featured in the series. Their passion and insights inspired us and we believe their stories will resonate with people everywhere," said James. "I am so excited to have found a distribution partner in Starz that shares the same dedication we have for this series and will help it finds its way into the world."

"Steve and his incredible team of field directors have created a series with extraordinary intimacy that shows the complexities and nuances of being a teenager in an American high school," said Diane Weyermann, President of Documentary Film and Television for Participant Media. "We are thrilled to partner with Starz and look forward to audiences falling in love with 'America to Me' just as we have."

James directed and executive produced the 10 hour-long episode docuseries via his longtime production home, Kartemquin Films. The series is executive produced by Gordon Quinn (Hoop Dreams,The Trials of Muhammad Ali, Unbroken Glass), Betsy Steinberg (Edith + Eddie, Keep Talking, Stranded by the State) and Justine Nagan (Minding the Gap, All the Queen's Horses, "P.O.V."), with Participant Media's Jeff Skoll (The Help, The Kite Runner, Lincoln) and Diane Weyermann (An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, Human Flow and CITIZENFOUR).
Kevin Shaw (The NFL Season: A Biography, The Street Stops Here), Rebecca Parish (Radical Grace) and Bing Liu (Minding the Gap) served as story directors. John Condne served as series producer, along with producer Risé Sanders-Weir ("Wrath of God", Biography, "American Justice), co-producer Janea Smith ("Chicagoland") and associate producer Stephanie Smith. Film editing by Leslie Simmer (Raising Bertie, The Homestretch) and David E. Simpson (Life Itself); associate editor, Alanna Schmelter ("Bizarre Foods: Delicious Destinations," "Young Marvels," Live Free or Die"); and assistant editor, Rubin Daniels (Standing on Common Ground: New Orleans Ten Years Later).

Kartemquin Films received a grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to contribute to the production of the docuseries.

"America to Me" made its world premiere with the first five episodes at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival in the new "Indie Episodic" category.

Starz retains all domestic multiplatform pay TV and SVOD rights to the series. Lionsgate, which represents international rights to Participant's feature film and select documentaries, will retain all international and domestic distribution and home entertainment rights to the series as well.
Vice President of Original Programming Patrick McDonald is the Starz executive overseeing this docuseries. Negotiations were brokered by Brett Marottoli, Head of Program Acquisitions for Starz, along with Gabriel Brakin and Krista Wegener for Participant and Endeavor Content on behalf of Participant/Kartemquin.

"America to Me" docuseries is part of the previously announced unscripted programming added to the larger portfolio of STARZ Originals including the docuseries "Wrong Man," "Warriors of Liberty City," "In Fashion" and "The Field."

[via press release from ESPN] 30 for 30 "The Two Bills" to Premiere February 1 on ESPN
Documentary Chronicles Unique Bond between NFL Coaching Legends Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells

The next documentary from ESPN Films' Peabody and Emmy award-winning 30 for 30 series will be "The Two Bills," featuring legendary football coaches Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells being interviewed together for the first time since 1991. Directed by Ken Rodgers and produced by NFL Films, "The Two Bills" will premiere Thursday, Feb. 1, at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.

"The Two Bills" traces the relationship between these two coaching masters that spans over four decades. They first worked side by side as assistants with the New York Giants, and after Parcells took over as head coach, they won two Super Bowls together. Buttressed by what he learned from Parcells, Belichick has won five Super Bowls of his own with the Patriots and has the opportunity to capture yet another at next week's Super Bowl LII in Minnesota.

Through all the ups and downs of their careers, including some memorable games when they were on opposite sides of the field, they forged a bond that few men of their stature have ever experienced. Two Bills, but one epic story. Trailer:

"To say that Bill Belichick and Bill Parcells have strong personalities would be a huge understatement," said Rodgers. "When we set out to make this film, our number one goal was to find out how these two strong-willed coaches, with such determined individual viewpoints, could work together for as long as they did. But by the time we were done, we couldn't imagine them not working together for all those years. Their histories and philosophies are more intertwined than we could have imagined. We're thrilled they chose to share that history with all of us."

The documentary features interviews with Lawrence Taylor, Robert Kraft, Romeo Crennel, Charlie Weis, Scott Pioli, Ty Law, and more. It will be available on VOD and in the ESPN App immediately following the conclusion of the film on February 1.

"The opportunity to tell this story wasn't one we had to think twice about - rarely do two legends with such great history sit down and open up," said ESPN Films vice president and executive producer Libby Geist. "Ken's style of letting their interview guide the narrative in 'The Two Bills' is something we think football fans won't be able to turn away from."

Additional information, including film clips and director statements and bios, are available on the 30 for 30 website Follow 30 for 30 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

An unflinching psychological thriller set amidst the underbelly of New York City's "Gilded Age," The Alienist follows Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Brühl, Inglourious Basterds, Rush, Captain America: Civil War), a brilliant and obsessive "Alienist" in the controversial new field of treating mental pathologies, who holds the key to hunting down a never-before-seen ritualistic killer murdering young boys. Based on the award-winning, fan-favorite novel by Caleb Carr, with standout performances from Luke Evans (The Girl on the Train) and Dakota Fanning (American Pastoral), The Alienist is a gripping, turn-of-the-century murder mystery like none other: the story of the emergence of the world's most powerful city that will stop at nothing to bury its darkest secrets.

The series also stars Brian Geraghty (The Hurt Locker) as police commissioner Theodore Roosevelt, Douglas Smith (Miss Sloane) and Matthew Shear (Mistress America) as Marcus and Lucius Isaacson, twin brothers who help unravel the disturbing mystery; Matt Lintz (Pixels) as Stevie, a tough, young boy employed by Dr. Kreizler as a driver and errand boy; Robert Ray Wisdom (The Wire) as Cyrus, Kreizler's valet, a man with a dark past who has been reformed by Kreizler; and Q'orianka Kilcher (The New World) as Mary, Kreizler's mute maid with whom he shares a special unspoken connection.

"The response to the show in the US has been incredible and now I can't wait for the rest of the world to watch it", says Luke Evans.

"To play one of the most compelling characters I've ever read on the page has been a huge honour", says Daniel Brühl. "Caleb Carr devised a fascinating world of intrigue and complexity, and I look forward to international audiences seeing how our brilliant cast and creatives have brought his words to life."

"I am very proud of this show, and really excited that people will be able to watch it all at once", adds Dakota Fanning.

Mayberry R.F.D. - Warner Archive to Re-Release 'The Complete 1st Season' DVDs

Mayberry R.F.D. - Warner Archive to Re-Release 'The Complete 1st Season' DVDs

MOD version will be available online at the end of February

Posted by David Lambert
In 2014, the folks at Warner Home Video released DVDs of Mayberry R.F.D. - The Complete 1st Season into stores, priced at $29.99 SRP. It eventually went out of print, though, and now used copies can easily go for over $100 each...while "new, still wrapped" copies can easily go for 3 times that much (or more!). It's rare, and in high demand. But now you don't have to pay through the nose for it any more.

Today the Warner Archive Collection announced that it will re-release the title as an MOD (manufacture on demand) item this coming February 27th. It's expected to be identical in terms of on-disc contents, and it even has the same package art (see an image of the cover, below). This is the first of three seasons, and if it sells well enough then perhaps the Warner Archive will see their way clear to release MOD sets of the second and third season, too? We're not sure, but the possibility is always there!

Price for the new MOD release of The Complete 1st Season is $34.99 SRP, which is five dollars more than the original in-store release. Inflation? We don't know. But it's sure a better price than the current after-market costs, right? You can pre-order your copy right away from the online studio store, using this button link:
