SHUDDER AND RLJE FILMS ADOPT SUPERNATURAL HORROR ‘SON’

Starring HALLOWEEN’s Andi Matichak and INTO THE WILD’s Emile Hirsch, Written and Directed by THE CANAL’s Ivan Kavanagh
February 20, 2020 — Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, and RLJE Films, a business unit of AMC Networks, have teamed up to acquire writer/director Ivan Kavanagh’s highly anticipated supernatural horror, Son. Currently in production, the film stars Andi Matichak (Halloween, Halloween Kills), Emile Hirsch (The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Never Grow Old) and Luke David Blumm (The Sinner). Shudder has picked up all rights in North America, the UK and Ireland, with RLJE Films taking North American theatrical, VOD, Digital and Home Video rights.
Having escaped from a cult as a child, a mother (Matichak) must face her past when its sinister members break into her home and attempt to steal her eight-year-old son (Blumm). Now the two are on the run pursued by a detective (Hirsch) committed to saving them both—only the boy has fallen ill to a mysterious illness. Something has changed in him since his aborted kidnapping.
“With his first horror feature, The Canal, it was obvious Ivan Kavanagh was an important new voice in genre cinema, with a special talent for plumbing the depths of terror within the bond between parent and child. We are thrilled to be working with Ivan on Son, and look forward to bringing his chilling vision to Shudder members,” said Emily Gotto, Shudder’s Director of Global Acquisitions & Co-Production.
Son is being produced by AnneMarie Naughton for Park Films (The Canal), Louis Tisné for Elastic Film (Border) and René Bastian for Belladonna Productions (Cold In July), with funding from Golden Ratio Films, Quickfire Films, Three Point Capital, with the support of the Irish Film Tax Credit incentive, and with Altitude Film Sales acting as Sales Agent.
Golden Ratio Films, a Vistas Media Capital subsidiary based out of Singapore and a significant production and distribution entity in Bollywood and in the Indian Content Space, is making its first foray in Hollywood as a co-producer on Son, co-funding the film with established UK-based company Quickfire Films.
Matichak is represented by Innovative Artists, Hirsch by UTA, Blumm by People Store and Kavanagh by Paradigm. The deal was negotiated by Louis Tisné on behalf of the producers with Mike Runagall for Altitude, Emily Gotto on behalf of Shudder and Mark Ward on behalf of RLJE Films.

SHUDDER ACQUIRES JOSH RUBEN’S FEATURE DIRECTORIAL DEBUT ‘SCARE ME’ AND JAYRO BUSTAMANTE’S VENICE AWARD-WINNER ‘LA LLORONA’ AHEAD OF THEIR SUNDANCE PREMIERES

SHUDDER ACQUIRES JOSH RUBEN’S FEATURE DIRECTORIAL DEBUT ‘SCARE ME’ AND JAYRO BUSTAMANTE’S VENICE AWARD-WINNER ‘LA LLORONA’ AHEAD OF THEIR SUNDANCE PREMIERES

New York, NY – Monday, December 16 – Shudder, AMC Networks’ premiere streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, has announced the acquisition of all rights in its territories (North America, the UK and Ireland) to the Sundance Film Festival-bound titles SCARE ME and LA LLORONA. SCARE ME, Josh Ruben’s feature-length directorial and screenplay debut, in which he also stars alongside Aya Cash (“You’re The Worst”) and Chris Redd (“Saturday Night Live”), will have its world premiere in Sundance’s Midnight Section. Jayro Bustamante’s LA LLORONA will have its U.S. premiere in the festival’s Spotlight Section following its top award-winning world premiere at Venice Days, the independent competitive section of the Venice Film Festival, and its Canadian premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival.
The comedic thriller SCARE ME unfolds as two strangers tell scary stories during a power outage in the Catskills. The more Fred (Ruben) and Fanny (Cash) commit to their tales, the more the stories come to life in the dark cabin. The horrors of reality manifest when Fred confronts his ultimate fear: Fanny is the better storyteller. Josh Ruben pens a refreshing, hilarious, and self aware narrative that features committed performances from Ruben, Cash, and Redd that beg the question: what makes a good scare?
Josh Ruben is a five-time Webby Award-winning actor, writer, and director best known for appearing in and/or directing hundreds of shorts for comedy megasite, CollegeHumor. Josh recently directed all ten
episodes of Spotify and Funny or Die’s upcoming narrative series, “The Last Degree of Kevin Bacon” and is currently in pre-production for his next feature, a horror/comedy whodunnit with Ubisoft Film & Television and Vanishing Angle producing. Ruben is represented by Artists First, ICM and Ginsburg Daniels Kallis. SCARE ME was produced by Josh Ruben, and Irony Point’s Alex Bach and Daniel Powell. ICM negotiated the deal with Shudder’s Emily Gotto.
LA LLORONA follows Enrique, a retired general who oversaw the Mayan genocide and is haunted by his devastating crimes. A tale of horror and magical realism, the film reimagines the iconic Latin American fable as an urgent metaphor of Guatemala’s recent history and tears open the country’s unhealed political wounds to grieve a seldom discussed crime against humanity.
The film received unanimous acclaim out of Venice and TIFF, with The Wrap ’s Carlos Aguilar praising its balance “between fact and myth to engender a shrewdly frightening piece of political horror” and Variety ’s Guy Lodge calling it “meaty, adventurous auteur cinema.” LA LLORONA marks Bustamante’s third feature and demonstrates his continued efforts to highlight social inequality in his native Guatemala following his previous titles TEMBLORES (2019) and IXCANUL (2016).
LA LLORONA was produced by Jayro Bustamante, Gustavo Matheu, Georges Renand, and Marina Peralta. Film Factory negotiated the deal with Shudder’s Emily Gotto.
Speaking on the acquisition, Shudder’s General Manager Craig Engler said, “We are thrilled that the Sundance Film Festival has recognized the exceptional talents of Jayro Bustamante and Josh Ruben and their new films, each of which pushes the boundaries of genre cinema in exciting and surprising ways. We can’t wait to share LA LLORONA and SCARE ME soon with Shudder members around the world.”
“I’m so grateful that SCARE ME has found its home at Shudder,” said filmmaker Josh Ruben. “It was a bucket list item to make this movie, let alone get eyes on it. Now, we’re headed to Sundance under the Shudder banner. They’re the horror club you want to be a part of. Their curation is expert, and they’re so creator-forward. It’s a total privilege, I’m dead serious, pun intended.”
“For independent producers like us, it is very hard to film a movie in a country like Guatemala,” said filmmaker Jayro Bustamante. “It honors us that a distributor like Shudder is supporting a film from a country with an emerging industry. It is very important for us to make visible the social and political horrors from Guatemalan history; and on the other hand, to help the industry grow and display our talent. I am extremely happy that LA LLORONA will be seen in the U.S. at Sundance alongside Shudder.”

AMC NETWORKS’ TARGETED SVOD SERVICES PASS 2 MILLION TOTAL SUBSCRIBERS

AMC NETWORKS’ TARGETED SVOD SERVICES PASS 2 MILLION TOTAL SUBSCRIBERS

Acorn TV, Shudder, Sundance Now, and UMC continue to stand out in the special interest SVOD market and hit new milestone for the company
New York, NY (December 10, 2019) – AMC Networks (NASDAQ: AMCX) today announced that its four targeted subscription video on demand services – Acorn TV, Shudder, Sundance Now, and UMC (Urban Movie Channel) – now exceed two million subscribers, marking a major new milestone and achieving a year-end target for the company.
AMC Networks’ targeted SVOD services offer curated content destinations that provide unique viewership experiences for distinct audiences. They include: Acorn TV, specializing in world-class mysteries and drama from Britain and beyond; Shudder, super serving fans of horror and suspense; Sundance Now, featuring mysteries, dramas and true crime; and UMC, the first streaming destination dedicated to black audiences.
“AMC Networks continues to lead in the targeted SVOD category. We are building loyal and engaged fan communities around our growing services and our momentum affirms our strategy of super serving distinct premium audiences,” said Josh Sapan, AMC Networks President and CEO. “From a financial perspective, our offerings are efficient and attractive, with a large addressable market. We spend much less on programming and marketing than the general entertainment streaming services, and we are able to achieve scale at much lower subscriber levels. As a result, our subscribers have very attractive long-term values.”
Sapan added: “As the market for this category evolves, consumers are increasingly complementing their general entertainment subscriptions with our services, which are becoming ‘must-have’ destinations for each of our target audiences.”
AMC Networks’ premium SVOD services are consistently recognized as being among the best streaming offerings for consumers by leading critics and publications. Recent accolades include The New York Times naming Acorn TV’s Manhunt, and Sundance Now’s Emmy-winning State of the Union and Unspeakable, as among the Best International Shows of 2019; and New York magazine naming Shudder’s One Cut of the Dead as a Best Movie of 2019. Shudder’s original series Creepshow, which premiered in September, set records for viewership, subscriber acquisition and total minutes streamed and has been renewed for a second season. UMC continues to stand out with a broad mix of original series, classic sitcoms, and feature films, including Daytime Emmy-nominated series Bronx SIU and the LisaRaye McCoy- and Duane Martin-led classic UPN sitcom All of Us.

SUPERNATURAL M Ā ORI ACTION-ADVENTURE SERIES “THE DEAD LANDS” TO PREMIERE JANUARY 23 EXCLUSIVELY ON AMC NETWORKS’ SHUDDER & TVNZ

SUPERNATURAL M Ā ORI ACTION-ADVENTURE SERIES “THE DEAD LANDS” TO PREMIERE JANUARY 23 EXCLUSIVELY ON AMC NETWORKS’ SHUDDER & TVNZ

Epic Eight-Episode Original Series is Set in a Mythic New Zealand
December 5, 2019 — Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural, announced today that its new original series THE DEAD LANDS , a co-production with New Zealand’s TVNZ, will premiere with two episodes on Thursday, January 23, across all of Shudder’s territories (US, Canada, the UK and Ireland). It will also air on TVNZ OnDemand in New Zealand immediately after its international debut. Subsequent episodes will premiere on both Shudder and TVNZ OnDemand weekly.
THE DEAD LANDS features a supernatural adventure set in a mythic Māori past, with an aesthetic that’s part Ash vs Evil Dead and part Xena: Warrior Princess . The series features a murdered Māori warrior, Waka Nuku Rau (Te Kohe Tuhaka), who’s sent back to the world of the living to redeem his sins. But the world Waka returns to is ravaged by a breach between Life and the Afterlife as the spirits of the newly dead now stalk the land and hunt the living.
Waka encounters a determined young woman, Mehe (Darneen Christian), who becomes both his protégé and moral compass. Together, they navigate tribal politics, the unsettled ghosts of Ancestors and other forces both natural and supernatural, on a quest to discover who “broke the world” and how to repair it—if it’s not too late.
The eerie world of THE DEAD LANDS as well as the characters brought to life (or death) within it are inspired by Māori traditions and histories. The series is set in a mythical Aoteoroa (the Māori name for New Zealand), taking full advantage of the natural beauty of its landscapes. The series features screen combat performed in the Māori martial art of Mau Rākau, while elements of action and fantasy throughout the story have been given shape by versions of Māori rituals reimagined for the show. In order to honor the Māori people and their culture, the creation of the series required authoritative Māori control and advice to be present in all areas, both in front of and behind the camera.”
The modern Māori world thrives because our story traditions insist we respect the past before we explore the potential of the future. With THE DEAD LANDS, we’re proud to bring our people and those traditions to global audiences,” said producer Tainui Stephens.
“THE DEAD LANDS is a bold, exciting series unlike anything else on TV—an epic adventure in a breathtaking setting, based on Māori culture. It’s got action, scares and humor in equal measures, and we can’t wait to share it with Shudder members around the world,” said Craig Engler, Shudder’s General Manager.
“THE DEAD LANDS is a Māori story on a global scale. It’s important content filled with wairua. Our viewers are going to love this epic drama and we’re excited to be part of the international conversation surrounding the programme, as we stream at the same time as our friends at Shudder,” said TVNZ Director of Content, Cate Slater.
THE DEAD LANDS stars Te Kohe Tuhaka ( Monster Problems ) as “Waka Nuku Rau,” Toi Whakaari New Zealand Drama School senior Darneen Christian in her first television role as “Mehe Te Wehiwehi,” Kirk Torrance ( Outrageous Fortune ) as “Kā” and Vicky Haughton ( Whale Rider, King Kong ) as “Turika.” The series is written by Glenn Standring ( Six Days) who also wrote the 2014 The Dead Lands feature, which is set in the same mythical world as the series but is unconnected to its characters or story. The eight-episode series from production company GFC Films is executive produced by Standring, Fraser Brown and Matthew Metcalfe, produced by Tainui Stephens and Liz Adams, and directed by Peter Meteherangi Tikao Burger and Michael Hurst.

SHUDDER DELIVERS HORROR FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH NEW SPECIAL ‘JOE BOB’S RED CHRISTMAS’

SHUDDER DELIVERS HORROR FOR THE HOLIDAYS WITH NEW SPECIAL ‘JOE BOB’S RED CHRISTMAS’ New Special Premieres Friday, December 13, at 9pm ET

OCTOBER 25, 2019 — Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thrillers and the supernatural, announced today that Joe Bob Briggs, host of The Last Drive-In , will return on December 13 with an all-new special, Joe Bob’s Red Christmas . The triple feature of holiday horrors will stream live at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT on Shudder in the U.S. and Canada. It will also be made available on demand later in December. The special will be Briggs’ second of the year, following Joe Bob’s Halloween Hootenanny , which premieres tonight.
“Every Christmas we try to get that perfect mix of movies the whole family can watch, plus movies that will cause every family member except dedicated horror fiends to run screaming from the room. That’s because we realize that Christmas celebrations can go either way. We think we’ve achieved that balance with Joe Bob’s Red Christmas , combining the cult, the classic and the bizarre in a holiday stew designed to keep you reaching for the egg nog or equivalent, and to keep Aunt Shirley complaining about your choices. In between the films we have holiday hijinks that are frankly embarrassing, because that’s also what Americans do on Christmas,” said Briggs.
The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs began in July 2018 as a one time, dusk-to-dawn-to-dusk, 13-movie marathon. It was intended to serve as a curtain call for Briggs, who first came to prominence hosting B-movies on The Movie Channel and TNT in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The marathon proved so popular that Shudder brought Briggs back—first for two, four-film specials, Thanksgiving Day’s Dinners of Death and December’s A Very Joe Bob Christmas —and, in March 2019, for a nine-week season of The Last Drive-In Friday night double features. The show’s hashtag, #TheLastDriveIn, trended on Twitter during each of its live premieres as fans enjoyed the show together in real time.
The Last Drive-In series will return for its second season in 2020 at a date to be announced. The Last Drive-In and Joe Bob’s Red Christmas are produced by Matt Manjourides and Justin Martell and directed by Austin Jennings.

The services will be offered on the majority of Spectrum set-top boxes in the coming months.
The launch is part of a recent broader long-term agreement between the two companies that includes continued carriage of AMC Networks’ AMC, BBC AMERICA, IFC, SundanceTV, WE tv and BBC World News linear television networks as well as an extension of a previously announced co-production arrangement between the companies.
“We have great admiration for Charter and we’re proud of the productive and mutually beneficial partnership we have enjoyed for decades,” said Ed Carroll, AMC Networks COO. “As both of our businesses continue to evolve, we are very pleased to expand our relationship by enriching Charter’s offering with our targeted SVOD services. Much like our networks, our SVOD services serve passionate audiences with the content they love. We look forward to continuing to forge a new path with Charter, giving Spectrum customers access to our shows on whatever platform they choose.”
“We are pleased to be working with AMC Networks to offer our customers a diverse slate of additional SVOD options in the near future,” said Tom Montemagno, EVP, Programming Acquisition for Charter. “With partners like AMC Networks, we’re strategically enabling our customers to have greater control over the content they want, in one place through their Spectrum subscription, and with pricing flexibility to meet their needs.”
AMC Premiere delivers a premium experience to fans of AMC’s original programming with commercial-free viewing, early access to content and the opportunity to binge select series, including the Emmy- and Golden Globe-Award winning Killing Eve, The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead and The Terror.
AMC Networks’ SVOD services have experienced substantial growth over the past year, with its Acorn TV service, North America’s largest and most popular streaming service for British and international television, recently surpassing the 1 million paid subscriber milestone. The growth has been driven by demand for acclaimed series Line of Duty, Agatha Raisin, Doc Martin, and Lucy Lawless in My Life is Murder.
AMC Networks’ other SVOD services include:
  • Shudder, an essential offering for fans of horror, thriller and suspense with an unmatched library of series and films, including the premiere of its newest original series, Creepshow, which set records in terms of viewers, subscriber acquisition and total minutes streamed, and was just renewed for a second
  • Sundance Now offers a rich selection of original and exclusive series from engrossing true crime to heart-stopping dramas and fiercely intelligent thrillers from around the world, including Discovery of Witches, Riviera and Killing for Love.

SHUDDER RENEWS HIT SERIES CREEPSHOW FOR SECOND SEASON

Season One Finale of the Horror Anthology Series, Executive Produced by
Greg Nicotero, Airs October 31 on Shudder

October 30, 2019 - Following a record-setting first season, Shudder — AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thriller and the supernatural — today announced the season two renewal of its horror anthology series, Creepshow. Executive produced by showrunner Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead), Creepshow is based on the iconic 1982 movie written by Stephen King and directed by George A. Romero.

Creepshow, Shudder’s first hour-long scripted series, has been a hit with its members and critics alike. The series is rated 92% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and was called one of the “10 best shows on TV right now“ by Paste Magazine. More than 50% of Shudder members watched at least one episode of the series, and the show has also helped drive record growth for the streaming service.

Creepshow has met every expectation we had for Shudder’s first original scripted series and then some, with record numbers across the board,” said Shudder GM Craig Engler. “Greg Nicotero and his team delivered an amazing show that’s unlike anything else on TV and we’re thrilled and delighted to bring it back for another season.”

“For me, Creepshow has been a true labor of love,” said Nicotero. “To be able to pay tribute to George A. Romero’s visionary project and have the show so embraced by fans everywhere is humbling to this horror kid from Pittsburgh. I couldn’t be more pleased and look forward to continuing the series with more ghoulish delight.”

“Working with Greg Nicotero and Shudder on Creepshow has been a dream come true,” said Stan Spry, executive producer for the series and CEO of the Cartel. “We’re thrilled to carry on the Creepshow legacy with season two.”

The season one finale airs Thursday, October 31, both on demand and on the Shudder TV live-stream at 9:00 pm ET/6:00 pm PT. Shudder is available on all your favorite devices and platforms, including Apple TV Channels.

Season one of Creepshow stars David Arquette (Scream franchise), Adrienne Barbeau (The Fog), Tobin Bell (Saw), Big Boi (Scream: The TV Series), Jeffrey Combs (Star Trek, Re-Animator), Kid Cudi (Drunk Parents), Bruce Davison (X-Men), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul), Dana Gould (Stan Against Evil), Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica) and DJ Qualls (Supernatural) and features adaptations of stories by Stephen King, Joe Hill, Joe R. Lansdale, Josh Malerman and others. Nicotero’s Oscar, BAFTA and Emmy award-winning Make-up Effects studio KNB EFX GROUP will again serve as creature creators.

Shudder’s Creepshow is produced by the Cartel with Monster Agency Productions, Taurus Entertainment, and Striker Entertainment: Stan Spry, Jeff Holland, and Eric Woods are executive producers for the Cartel; Greg Nicotero and Brian Witten are executive producers for Monster Agency Productions; Robert Dudelson, James Dudelson and Jordan Kizwani are executive producers for Taurus Entertainment; Russell Binder is executive producer and Marc Mostman co-executive producer for Striker Entertainment.
