After 35 days of delayed viewing on linear and digital platforms, the 24th season premiere of “The Bachelor” soared to 12.0 million Total Viewers and a 4.96 rating in Adults 18-49. “The Bachelor” shot up by +4.5 million viewers and by +105% among Adults 18-49 from Live+3 Day to Multiplatform+35 Day.
  • “The Bachelor” jumped over last season’s premiere by nearly 2.0 million viewers (12.0 million vs. 10.1 million) and by 21% in Adults 18-49 (4.96 rating vs. 4.09 rating).

  • The premiere of “The Bachelor” grew over last season’s average by 9% in Total Viewers and by double digits Adults 18-49 (+17%).
  • “The Bachelor” premiere delivered the series’ strongest Multiplatform+35 numbers in 2 years among Total Viewers (12.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (4.96 rating) – since 1/1/18.

  • In addition, with 35 days of TV playback on linear platforms, ABC’s “The Bachelor” spiked over last season’s opener by double digits in Total Viewers (+14% – 8.1 million vs. 7.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (+17% – 2.7/13 vs. 2.3/8) to score its strongest premiere in 3 years – since its January 2017 premiere (on 1/2/17).

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.605 million Total Viewers, 349,000 Women 25-54 and 250,000 Women 18-49, during the week of Feb. 17, 2020, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.



“The View” was up over the previous week in Total Viewers (+2% – 2.605 million vs. 2.559 million), drawing its largest overall audience in 6 weeks  since  w/o 1/6/20.



Season to date, amongst all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs (23 total), “The View” (2.608 million) ranks No. 4, trailing only “Dr. Phil” (3.405 million), “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (2.797 million) and “Ellen” (2.764 million).

For the First Time in 24 Years, ‘World News Tonight’ Is Winning Total Viewers and Adults 25-54, Season to Date

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the evening’s No. 1 newscast in all key target demos: Total Viewers 
(9.028 million), Adults 25-54 (1.808 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.176 million) for the week of Feb. 17, 2020, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (7.788 million, 1.602 million and 1.093 million, respectively) by 1.240 million Total Viewers, 206,000 Adults 25-54 and 83,000 Adults 18-49.  In fact, “World News Tonight” scored its 2nd-largest overall viewer win of the season.

“World News Tonight” widened its lead over “NBC Nightly News” week to week by 8% in Total Viewers (vs. 1.149 million) and by 119% in Adults 25-54 (vs. 94,000), winning in both measures for the 10th consecutive week.  In addition, “World News Tonight” increased its margins of victory year to year by triple digits in both Total Viewers (+105%; vs. 606,000) and Adults 25-54 (+724%; vs. 25,000), leading in overall viewers in all 22 weeks of the season and the last 65 weeks overall.

“World News Tonight” saw increases over the previous week in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+9,000 – 9.028 million vs. 9.019 million), Adults 25-54 (+80,000/+5% – 1.808 million vs. 1.728 million) and Adults 18-49 (+65,000/+6% – 1.176 million vs. 1.111 million).  

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (8.863 million) ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers at this point of the season for the 3rd consecutive year, based on Most Current DataIn fact, “World News Tonight” is nearly doubling its lead over “NBC Nightly News” (7.988 million) from last season (+98% – 875,000 vs. 442,000) to its largest season lead in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season. “World News Tonight” is beating “CBS Evening News” (5.699 million) by 3.164 million, posting its biggest Total Viewer season advantage in at least 28 years (since at least the start of Nielsen electronic database in the 1991-1992 season).

In addition, “World News Tonight” is No. 1 for the season in Adults 25-54, leading NBC by its largest news demo margin (+50,000 – 1.734 million vs. 1.684 million) in 24 years and taking the top spot for the first time at this point of a season in 12 years—since the 1995-1996 and the 2007-2008 seasons, respectively. “World News Tonight” is also slashing its season margin with NBC in Adults 18-49 (-91% – 5,000 vs. 56,000), seeing its closest gap in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season.

“World News Tonight” is No. 1 in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 season to date for the first time in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season.

For the week, “World News Tonight” (9.028 million, 1.808 million and 1.176 million, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (5.766 million, 1.122 million and 790,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+3.262 million), Adults 25-54 (+686,000) and Adults 18-49 (+386,000).

With its 3-hour drama lineup, ABC emerged as Thursday’s No. 1 network outright in Adults 18-49 (1.5/8), surging past Univision to lead by 36% (1.1/6), while also dominating NBC by 50% (1.0/5), CBS by 67% (0.9/5) and Fox by 67% (0.9/5). In fact, ABC won Thursday night for the 5th straight week among Adults 18-49. ABC claimed the night’s Top 2 highest-rated series with “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Station 19,” respectively. In addition, ABC moved into a tie with CBS as Thursday’s most-watched network in the L+3 numbers (7.8 million) after pacing behind in L+SD.

  • Driven by the night’s Top 2 biggest gainers in TV playback, ABC was Thursday’s No. 1 gainerin Adults 18-49, spiking by +0.6 rating points from L+SD to L+3 and topping the playback increases for NBC (+0.4 rating points), Fox (+0.3 rating  points) and CBS (+0.3 rating points).



“Station 19” (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 8.0 million and 1.4/7 in AD18-49):
“Station 19” grew week to week by 4% in Total Viewers (8.0 million vs. 7.7 million) and by 8% with Adults 18-49 (1.4/7 vs. 1.3/7) to deliver its best performance since its season premiere four weeks earlier in both Nielsen measures – since 1/23/20. ABC’s “Station 19” emerged as Thursday’s No. 2 program among Adults 18-49 in the L+3 numbers (tied with CBS’ “Young Sheldon”), moving up from No. 3 in L+SD and moving ahead of Univision with “Premio Lo Nuestro 2020” (1.1/6).

“Grey’s Anatomy” (9:00-10:01 p.m. – 8.7 million and 1.9/10 in AD18-49):
“Grey’s Anatomy” grew for its 3rd consecutive telecast in Total Viewers (+5% – 8.7 million vs. 8.3 million) to draw its largest audience in 4 weeks and held even week to week among Adults 18-49 (1.9/10). “Grey’s Anatomy” solidified its rank as Thursday’s No. 1 programin Adults 18-49 (1.9/10), standing as the night’s top-rated program on all 5 of its telecasts this year.

  • “Grey’s Anatomy” was Thursday’s No. 1 gainer in TV playback with Adults 18-49 (+0.8 rating points).



“A Million Little Things” (10:01-11:00 p.m. – 6.5 million and 1.3/7 in AD18-49):
ABC’s “A Million Little Things” emerged as the No. 1 program in the Thursday 10:00 p.m. hour among Adults 18-49 in the L+3 numbers (1.3/7), tying “Law & Order: SVU” after standing 1-tenth of a rating point behind the NBC drama in L+SD and beating Univision’s “Premio Lo Nuestro 2020” by 30% (1.0/6). “AMLT” inched up over the prior week in Total Viewers (+2% – 6.5 million vs. 6.4 million) and held even week to week among Adults 18-49.

  • “A Million Little Things” was Thursday’s No. 2 gainer in TV playback in Adults 18-49 (+0.7 rating points), behind only ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” and was the only broadcast program on the night to more than double its L+SD rating (+117%) after 3 days of playback.

With “The Bachelor” and “The Good Doctor,” ABC ranked as Monday’s No. 1 network in Adults 18-49 (2.0/10), increasing its lead over runner-up NBC to 6-tenths of a rating point in the L+3 numbers (1.4/7) versus a 5-tenths advantage in L+SD. ABC stood as Monday’s highest-rated broadcaster for the 7th straight week in Adults 18-49 and once again claimed the night’s Top 2 series with “The Bachelor” and “The Good Doctor,” respectively. In addition, ABC inched past NBC to emerge as the night’s most-watched network (8.2 million vs. 8.1 million) after 3 days of TV playback after trailing behind in L+SD. The Net grew over the prior week in Total Viewers (+1% – 8.2 million vs. 8.1 million) to score its most-watched Monday since November – since 11/25/19.

·       ABC was Monday’s No. 1 gainer in TV playback in Adults 18-49, growing by +0.5 rating points from L+SD to L+3 and topping the increases for NBC (+0.4 rating points), Fox (+0.3 rating  points) and CBS (+0.2 rating points).



“The Bachelor” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 7.8 million and 2.3/11 in AD18-49):

ABC’s “The Bachelor” built for its 3rd straight Monday telecast in Total Viewers (+4% – 7.8 million vs. 7.5 million) to deliver its largest audience so far this season and was up over the prior week by 5% among Adults 18-49 (2.3/11 vs. 2.2/11) to hit a 4-week high – since 1/20/20. “The Bachelor” solidified its rank as Monday’s No. 1 show in Adults 18-49 (2.3/11), standing as the night’s highest-rated series on each of its 7 telecasts this season. Dominating NBC’s “AGT: The Champions” for the 7th week in a row among Adults 18-49, “The Bachelor” widened its winning advantage to 9-tenths of a rating point in the L+3 numbers (2.3/11 vs. 1.4/7) compared to a 6-tenths lead in L+SD.



“The Good Doctor” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 8.9 million and 1.6/9 in AD18-49):

ABC’s “The Good Doctor” emerged as Monday’s No. 2 series in Adults 18-49 in the L+3 numbers (1.6/9), moving up from No. 4 in L+SD and leapfrogging over “AGT: The Champions” (1.4/7) and Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star” (1.3/6) after standing behind both shows in L+SD. In addition, The Good Doctor” outdelivered NBC’s 10:00 p.m. drama by 23% among Adults 18-49 (1.3/7 for “Manifest”), tying its largest advantage yet. “The Good Doctor” held even week to week in Adults 18-49, matching its highest-rated telecast of the year.

·       ABC’s The Good Doctor” stood as Monday’s No. 1 gainer in TV playback in Total Viewers (+3.69 million) and Adults 18-49 (+0.7 rating points – tied with “Manifest”).

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Adults 18-49 (252,000) during the week of Feb. 17, 2020, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” defeated CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (239,000) by 13,000 and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (238,000) by 14,000.

In addition, “Nightline” (971,000) beat NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (960,000) by 11,000 Total Viewers. “Nightline” (326,000) also led CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (318,000) by 8,000 Adults 25-54.

“Nightline” cut its Total Viewers gaps with CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” year to year (-64% – 98,000 vs. 271,000).

“Nightline” narrowed its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in Adults 25-54 from the previous week (-69% – 15,000 vs. 48,000) and the year-ago week (-85% – 15,000 vs. 100,000).

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+26,000 – 383,000 vs. 357,000) and Adults 18-49 (+18,000 – 275,000 vs. 257,000), leading the CBS program in both key Adult demos in all 5 seasons that the two programs have aired in their respective time periods—since the 2015-2016 season.

In addition, “Nightline” is cutting its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” for the 3rd season in a row in both Adults 25-54 (-32% – 63,000 vs. 93,000) and Adults 18-49 (-43% – 43,000 vs. 76,000), posting its closest-ever Adults 18-49 performance in the 6 seasons the two shows have aired in their respective time slots—since the 2014-2015 season.

Stories reported on “Nightline” last week included a trans body builder’s experience competing as a trans man, finding love and building a family and how his transition has changed his life; the indigenous people of the Brazilian Guajajara tribe risking life and limb to track and apprehend illegal loggers in their ancestral land; exclusive interviews with Chasten Buttigieg for series “Running Mates” and with former Rep. Katie Hill; a recap of the Democratic Debate in Nevada; and interviews with Billie Eilish and with the judges of “American Idol.”

NOTE: Due to Presidents Day on Monday (2/17/20), CBS’ “The Late Late Show” and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” were coded as specials. On Friday (2/21/20), CBS’ “The Late Late Show” was retitled to “Late Late Show-JC” on Friday. The telecasts are excluded from the weekly averages.  In addition, NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” telecasts were retitled during the week due to being repeats. The retitled telecasts will not be included in the season averages. NBC’s weekly averages are based on four days (Tuesday-Friday), while CBS’ weekly averages are based on three days (Tuesday-Thursday).

Premiering in February over the Presidents Day holiday for the first time (the prior two seasons had launched in March), the 3rd season premiere of ABC’s “American Idol” stood as Sunday’s No. 1 broadcast program in Adults 18-49 (1.8/9). Airing from 8:00-10:00 p.m., the “American Idol” premiere marked ABC’s strongest performance in the 2-hour time slot with series programming since April 2019 in Total Viewers (9.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.8/9) – since 4/28/19. In fact, “American Idol” grew by 13% over its finale telecast last May to tie its highest-rated telecast since in nearly 1 year in Adults 18-49 – since 3/3/19. In addition, the premiere of “American Idol” improved over last season’s average on Sunday night by 8% in Total Viewers (9.5 million vs. 8.8 million) and by 13% among Adults 18-49 (1.8/9 vs. 1.6/7).

  • The premiere of “American Idol” garnered 1.6 million total social interactions on Sunday across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, jumping 85% over last season’s opener (on 3/3/19).

ABC News’ “Nightline” averaged 1.061 million Total Viewers, 362,000 Adults 25-54 and 262,000 Adults 18-49 during the week of Feb. 10, 2020, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” defeated CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (317,000 and 221,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+45,000) and Adults 18-49 (+41,000) for 8th straight week.



“Nightline” improved week to week (1.021 million, 333,000 and 249,000, respectively, for w/o 2/3/20) in Total Viewers (+4%), Adults 25-54 (+9%) and Adults 18-49 (+5%).



“Nightline” narrowed its week-to-week gaps with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in Total Viewers (-52% – 59,000 vs. 122,000), Adults 25-54 (-41% – 48,000 vs. 82,000) and Adults 18-49 (-60% – 21,000 vs. 53,000).



“Nightline” cut its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” year to year in Total Viewers (-13% – 59,000 vs. 68,000), Adults 25-54 (-20% – 48,000 vs. 60,000) and Adults 18-49 (-56% – 21,000 vs. 48,000).



Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+27,000 – 385,000 vs. 358,000) and Adults 18-49 (+19,000 – 276,000 vs. 257,000), leading the CBS program in both key Adult demos in all 5 seasons that the two programs have aired in their respective time periods—since the 2015-2016 season.



In addition, “Nightline” is cutting its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” for the 3rd season in a row in both Adults 25-54 (-33% – 61,000 vs. 91,000) and Adults 18-49 (-42% – 42,000 vs. 72,000), posting its closest-ever Adults 18-49 performance in the 6 seasons the two shows have aired in their respective time slots—since the 2014-2015 season.

With its 3-hour drama line-up, ABC ranked as Thursday’s dominant No. 1 network in Adults 18-49 (1.5/8), increasing its lead over the nearest competition to 67% in the L+3 numbers (0.9/5 for Fox, NBC and CBS) versus a 29% advantage in L+SD.

At 8:00 p.m., “Station 19” won the hour among Adults 18-49 (1.3/7), beating comedies on CBS by 8% (1.2/7), on NBC by 44% (0.9/5) and on Fox by 44% (0.9/5). In fact, the ABC drama ranked as the No. 1 program in Thursday’s 8:00 p.m. hour for the 4th straight week with Adults 18-49. “Station 19” inched up week to week in Total Viewers (+1% – 7.7 million vs. 7.6 million) to its most-watched telecast since its season premiere—since 1/23/20.

“Grey’s Anatomy” emerged as Thursday’s No. 1 program among Adults 18-49 (1.9/10), beating runner-up CBS’ “Young Sheldon” by 5-tenths of a rating point in L+3 (1.4/8) after trailing 1-tenth behind in L+SD and standing as the night’s highest-rated program for the 4th consecutive week. “Grey’s Anatomy” grew over the prior week in Total Viewers (+4% – 8.3 million vs. 8.0 million) to draw its biggest audience since its mid-season return—since 1/23/20.

  • “Grey’s Anatomy” nearly doubled (+90%) its L+SD Adult 18-49 rating after 3 days of TV playback and stood as Thursday’s No. 1 playback gainer (+0.9 rating points).



“A Million Little Things” ranked No. 1 in the Thursday 10:00 p.m. hour among Adults 18-49 in the L+3 numbers (1.3/7), tying “Law & Order: SVU” after standing 1-tenth of a rating point behind the NBC drama in L+SD.

ABC claimed Monday’s Top 2 shows in Adults 18-49 with “The Bachelor” and “The Good Doctor,” respectively. The Net grew week to week by 14% in Total Viewers (8.1 million vs. 7.1 million) to deliver its most-watched Monday since November – since 11/25/19.

“The Bachelor” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 7.5 million and 2.2/11 in AD18-49):
ABC’s “The Bachelor” ranked as Monday’s No. 1 show in Adults 18-49 (2.2/11), standing as the night’s highest-rated series for the 6th consecutive week. In addition, “The Bachelor” widened its advantage over NBC’s “AGT: The Champions” to a full ratings points in the L+3 numbers (2.2/10 vs. 1.2/6) compared to an 8-tenths lead in L+SD. “The Bachelor” grew over its week-ago Monday telecast by 6% in Total Viewers (7.5 million vs. 7.1 million) and by 5% among Adults 18-49 (2.2/11 vs. 2.1/10).

“The Good Doctor” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 9.4 million and 1.6/9 in AD18-49):
Returning from the prior week’s pre-emption, “The Good Doctor” built over its most recent telecast two weeks earlier by 7% among Adults 18-49 (1.6/9 vs. 1.5/8) to tie its highest-rated telecast of the year. ABC’s “The Good Doctor” emerged as Monday’s No. 2 show in Adults 18-49 in the L+3 numbers (1.6/9), moving up from No. 4 in L+SD and leapfrogging over Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star” (1.5/7) and “AGT: The Champions” (1.2/6) after standing behind both shows in L+SD.   • In a first for the show, a special live episode of ABC’s “The Conners” shot up over its last original telecast two weeks ago by 19% in Total Viewers (6.3 million vs. 5.3 million) to deliver its most-watched telecast this season. In addition, “The Conners” jumped over its most-recent original by 22% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/6 vs. 0.9/5).

  • “The Conners” ranked No. 1 in its 8:00 p.m. half-hour among Adults 18-49, topping CBS’ “NCIS” by 10% (1.0/5) and NBC’s “Ellen’s Game of Games” by 38% (0.8/4).



  • The ABC comedy stood as Tuesday’s No. 2 TV show with Adults 18-49, behind only NBC’s “This Is Us.” In fact, “The Conners” virtually tied “This Is Us” in Total Viewers (6.34 million vs. 6.37 million).

  • The live episode of “The Conners” marked the series’ most-social telecast this season, with nearly 40,000 total social interactions (39,877) across Instagram (57%), Twitter (23%) and Facebook (19%).

ABC Is Monday’s No. 1 Broadcaster in Adults 18-49 for the 5th Straight Week
With ‘The Bachelor’ as the Night’s No. 1 Series on All 5 Weeks

ABC Monday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 7.1 million and 2.1/10 in AD18-49):
With a 3-hour edition of “The Bachelor,” ABC ranked as Monday’s No. 1 network in Adults 18-49 (2.1/10), standing as the night’s highest-rated broadcaster for the 5th straight week. ABC dominated runner-up Fox on the night by 31% in Adults 18-49 (2.1/10 vs. 1.6/7), as well as all-original lineups on NBC by 62% (1.3/7) and on CBS by 133% (0.9/5). ABC grew over the prior week by 11% among Adults 18-49 to match its highest-rated Monday in 4 weeks – since 1/6/20.

  • ABC’s “The Bachelor” stood as Monday’s No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49 (2.1/10) to qualify as the night’s top-rated series for the 5th week in a row.



  • “The Bachelor” towered over each of the highest-rated shows on the other networks, beating Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star” by 17% (1.8/8), NBC’s “Manifest” by 50% (1.4/7) and CBS’ “The Neighborhood” by 91% (1.1/6). In addition, “The Bachelor” widened its advantage over NBC’s “AGT: The Champions” to 8-tenths of a rating point in the L+3 numbers (2.1/10 vs. 1.3/6) compared to a 5-tenths lead in L+SD. “The Bachelor” held even week to week among Adults 18-49.

ABC’s 2020 telecast of “The Oscars” attracted an average audience of 23.6 million Total Viewers and a 5.3 rating in Adults 18-49 based on Nielsen’s Live + Same Day Fast National ratings. 



·       ABC’s 2020 “Oscars” telecast stood as TV’s most-watched entertainment special in 1 year – since ABC’s 2019 “Oscars” telecast on 2/24/19.



·       Television’s biggest awards show, ABC’s “The Oscars” stood well above other key award shows this year, towering over the 2020 “GRAMMY® Awards” by 4.9 million viewers (18.7 million on 1/26/20) and the 2020 “Golden Globe® Awards” by 5.3 million viewers (18.3 million on 1/5/20).



Social Activity (Nielsen Social)

“The Oscars” dominated Sunday night’s social conversation with 20.6 million total social interactions (Twitter: 67%, Instagram: 26% and Facebook: 6%). Social activity was up 16% from 2019 across comparable metrics (Total Twitter, Facebook Owned and Instagram Owned).
