Darrell refused to help him, but Michael makes his way with help from the sport's most legendary driver Richard Petty. As he chases his professional racing dreams, Michael competes in 462 races without notching a win. Along the way there are close calls, horrific crashes, changing teams but he only extends the longest losing streak in NASCAR history. With his struggling career and dreams hanging in the balance, iconic driver Dale Earnhardt put him in a Dale Earnhardt, Inc. team car for the 2001 DAYTONA 500. On the last lap of "The Great American Race" Michael was in first place, Earnhardt's son Dale, Jr. was in second (also part of the team) and Earnhardt was in third place. Instead of Earnhardt making his trademark charge to take the lead, he blocked the field of 40 hungry cars to protect Michael and Dale, Jr. As Michael finally takes the checkered flag, Earnhardt is swept up in what looks to be minor crash. Michael is ecstatic in victory lane, waiting for his friend to give him hug. It never comes as Earnhardt was killed in the wreck. Michael wrestles with guilt and questions his victory, while also leading the mourning for the sport's biggest star. July that year finds he and Dale, Jr. back at Daytona for the summer race. Michael yearns for another victory. On the last lap, Dale, Jr. is leading but Michael is coming hard and fast, and is perfectly set up to "slingshot" the lead and take the victory. Instead, he tucks in behind Dale, Jr., and pushes him across the line in honor of Junior's dad and Michael's friend. In future episodes, the guys fit a 12 Valve Cummins in a 1937 International truck, lift a huge 2019 Silverado 5500 Medium Duty 14 inches, make a custom chassis for a 1969 Corvette, complete a salvage renovation to NFL Hall of Famer and Texas legend Earl Campbell's 1949 Cadillac, and tackle maybe their biggest build yet, a 1996 International dump truck. Dax Shepard is a lifelong gearhead who grew up in Detroit and was raised by a single mother working in the automotive industry. While his personal life and work are extremely busy, Ant isn't one to rest on his laurels. The Alfa Romeo 158 was the first car to ever win a Formula One race, at the inaugural meet at Silverstone in 1950. Only six 158s were ever built and the two remaining carry an estimated value in excess of 20 million dollars. ANT ANSTEAD MASTER MECHANIC follows Ant as he found time to take on this ambitious, special passion project during WHEELER DEALERS' summer hiatus and before his baby boy arrived earlier this month.

Now, with MotorTrend documenting every moment, I get to build my own homage to this racing legend that I can keep for myself."
In ANT ANSTEAD MASTER MECHANIC, Anstead is using donor cars, a bunch of spare parts, handmade items, whatever raw materials he can get, and some help from local skilled engineers, vendors and friends to help him build the Alfa Romeo 158. The series is done in a "warts and all" documentary style as Anstead interacts openly with a small MotorTrend crew that captured this special project. In a way not done on WHEELER DEALERS, viewers will get a window inside Anstead's mind as he navigates the trials and tribulations of this truly one-of-a-kind automotive build. Viewers will also see a bit of what his life in America is like including: travelling with Anstead across California to find an original Alfa Romeo 158; his hosting of an Alfa Romeo event during Monterey Car Week this past summer; visiting legendary car designer Chip Foose and Chris Jacobs of MotorTrend's OVERHAULIN'; and shop visits from his wife Christina Anstead.

Eric Malone is a master mechanic with a deep passion for racing. If he's not roaring down a track, then he's buried beneath a car's hood tuning getting the best out of an engine. Early on Malone gained a passion for rebuilding engines and racing. His talent for fixing broken motors at the track gained him a job with renowned Alabama drag racer Kenny Ford, the owner of Muscles Shoals' Performance Torque Converters (PTC). While working for Kenny, Eric paved the way for legal street racing on closed tracks and built a reputation for having one of the fastest cars in the south. Today the best race car builders and grudge racers around Muscle Shoals compete to be on Malone's Team 256.
Brant Arnold is a former child model who began racing at a young age when his father introduced him to dirt track cars. As a teen Arnold raced on the streets but racing veterans in the area later convinced him that closed tracks were the best way to go so he swapped a street car for an S10 drag truck and a K5 mud truck. For years Arnold has built and raced cars. His latest car is a 1934 Ford three-window coupe with a blown injected 540 Chevy motor that he built from scratch.
