(WASHINGTON, D.C. - DECEMBER 21, 2018) To celebrate the holiday season, National Geographic will make the first two episodes of the upcoming limited series Valley of the Boom available for free beginning December 21st in advance of the series' broadcast premiere. The two episodes will be released unauthenticated on NationalGeographic.com and on the National Geographic TV app, which includes mobile and connected devices such as AppleTV, Roku, Chromecast and more. Additional platforms the two episodes will be available include Facebook, YouTube, VOD, Amazon Prime, iTunes, Google Play and Vudu.

"This series is yet another big creative swing for National Geographic so we felt it was important to create a meaningful sampling opportunity across all platforms in advance of the linear premiere," said Christian Drobnyk, EVP Programming Strategy & Acquisitions at National Geographic Partners. "As an added bonus, instead of avoiding your family this holiday season by playing on the internet, you can avoid your family by watching a show about the internet. A win-win for all!"

To promote the two-episode giveaway, National Geographic created a custom promotional piece, inspired by the traditional holiday yule log, starring Valley of the Boom's Lamorne Morris. In the spot, Morris, dressed in his best holiday sweater, is seen cozied up by the fire, reading a "Night Before Christmas" style poem about the 1990's internet boom and feeding the fire with dollar bills.

The six-part limited series will premiere Sunday, Jan. 13, at 9/8c on National Geographic. Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, the Duo Behind Phenomenon 'Stranger Things,' Bring Silicon Valley in the '90s to Life Through Sound

(WASHINGTON, DC/LOS ANGELES - July 25, 2018) - National Geographic has brought Emmy award-winning composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein on board to create a powerful soundtrack for its groundbreaking new show VALLEY OF THE BOOM. From executive producers Arianna Huffington and Matthew Carnahan ("House of Lies"), limited series VALLEY OF THE BOOM, set to premiere this winter, charts the meteoric rise and cataclysmic burst of the dot-com bubble.
This latest announcement continues National Geographic's tradition of tapping best-in-class composers to score the emotional narrative of the network's premium content programming. Previous collaborations include Hans Zimmer for GENIUS, Nick Cave and Warren Ellis for MARS, Philip Glass for JANE and Daniel Pemberton for ONE STRANGE ROCK.

Dixon and Stein are best known for their work on the soundtrack of "Stranger Things," for which they received two Grammy nominations as well as a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music. Making up half of the Austin band S U R V I V E, the duo flawlessly combines synth-heavy original music with the hits of the decade to create a nostalgic tribute to days gone by while maintaining a modern feel. Masters of their craft, Dixon and Stein continue to find ways to push the boundaries of music and television while remaining true to the narrative of their projects.
"We have long been inspired by the rich history and bright music from the 1990s, so when we learned of National Geographic's VALLEY OF THE BOOM, we were thrilled to be collaborating," said Dixon and Stein. "Sound shapes story, and we want this soundtrack to reflect the unconventional yet exhilarating era Matthew Carnahan exposes in the series."

Carolyn Bernstein, executive vice president of global scripted development and production, said, "Kyle and Michael are singular, groundbreaking composers and we're honored that they're sharing their immense talents with National Geographic and VALLEY OF THE BOOM. Their work will add yet another boundary-pushing layer to this unique, disruptive show."

VALLEY OF THE BOOM takes an adrenaline-fueled ride through the culture of speculation, innovation and disruption during Silicon Valley's unprecedented tech boom and subsequent bust in the 1990s. It's a timely and captivating story, starring two-time Emmy award-winning actor Bradley Whitford, Steve Zahn and Lamorne Morris, told through an irreverent blend of drama, comedy and pathos. While most of the show is scripted, showrunner and director Carnahan weaves in select documentary elements that help tell the true inside story of the internet's fascinating formative years.
VALLEY OF THE BOOM is produced by STX Entertainment's TV studio, STXtv, for National Geographic, with creator, showrunner, director and executive producer Carnahan (Showtime's "House of Lies") at the helm and executive producer Huffington (founder of The Huffington Post, founder and CEO of Thrive Global and the author of 15 books, including "Thrive" and "The Sleep Revolution").

Carnahan and Huffington are joined by fellow executive producers Jason Goldberg (E!'s "The Platinum Life," MTV's "Punk'd"), Brant Pinvidic (Spike TV's "Bar Rescue") and David Walpert ("House of Lies," "New Girl") and co-executive producers David Newsom, who will lead the nonscripted unit of the production, and Gary Goldman. Joel Ehninger of Matthew Carnahan Circus Products is co-executive producer. For National Geographic, Carolyn G. Bernstein is executive vice president and head of global scripted development and production, and for STXtv, Jada Miranda is executive vice president and head of scripted television, responsible for development and oversight of all of STXtv's scripted projects.

"Silicon Valley was and is a strange place; a Hollywood for geniuses," said Carnahan. "The dotcom boom of the '90s opened the floodgates for not just the amazing makers, but also Wall Street, mass media and a collection of fascinating charlatans. I'm thrilled to have Bradley, Steve, Lamorne and this stellar cast lined up, especially because all of them are disruptors in their own way, just like the real people they're portraying."

Rounding out the ensemble cast is John Karna ("Lady Bird," MTV's "Scream"), who will play Marc Andreesen, a computer engineer who co-created Mosaic, the first internet browser. Dakota Shapiro ("The Affair") and Oliver Cooper ("Red Oaks, "Project X") play Ivy League undergraduates who launched theglobe.com, one of the very first social networking sites, out of their dorm room.
"Valley of the Boom tells the surprising, provocative and inspiring stories of Silicon Valley's early pioneers," said Carolyn Bernstein, executive vice president global scripted development and production for National Geographic. "Matthew and his team have figured out an organic and dynamic way to interweave interviews with real-life Silicon Valley icons to amplify and enhance the authenticity and unpredictability of this fascinating true story."

"Matthew has written an original and riveting series with Valley of the Boom, in an incredibly unique format that is sure to keep audiences engaged and on the edge of their seats," said Jada Miranda, EVP and head of scripted television at STXtv. "We're honored to bring these powerful stories to screen with National Geographic, and could not have asked for a better cast to help introduce this unbelievable time in American history to audiences across the globe."

The series will air in early 2019 on National Geographic in 172 countries and 43 languages. STX will distribute the series in China, continuing the company's strategy to bridge the U.S. and Chinese markets.

[via press release from National Geographic Channel] NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GREENLIGHTS IRREVERENT SIX-PART LIMITED SERIES SET IN '90S TECH BUBBLE, "VALLEY OF THE BOOM" FROM STXtv

New Scripted Drama/Documentary Hybrid Series Hails from Showrunner and Director Matthew Carnahan and Executive Producer Arianna Huffington

(WASHINGTON, DC/LOS ANGELES, CA - November 15, 2017) Hot on the heels of National Geographic's 10 Emmy Award nominations for Genius and the premiere of the critically acclaimed drama series The Long Road Home, the network today announced it has greenlit its next scripted project, Valley of the Boom from STXtv. The new six-part limited series will take an adrenaline-fueled ride through the culture of speculation, innovation and debauchery that led to the rapid inflation and burst of the 1990s tech bubble. Supporting the scripted drama will be select doc elements (similar to the network's critically acclaimed hybrid series Mars) to tell the true inside story of the dramatic early days of Silicon Valley.

Valley of the Boom will be produced by STX Entertainment's TV studio, STXtv, for National Geographic along with creator, showrunner, director and executive producer Matthew Carnahan (Showtime's House of Lies) at the helm and executive producer Arianna Huffington (founder of The Huffington Post, founder and CEO of Thrive Global, and the author of fifteen books, including Thrive and The Sleep Revolution). The series will premiere globally on National Geographic in 171 countries and 45 languages. STX will distribute the series in China.

"National Geographic pioneered the hybrid scripted-docuseries genre with Mars, which is currently in production on its second season. With Valley of the Boom, we are continuing on the same genre-busting path," said Carolyn Bernstein, executive vice president and head of global scripted programming and development at National Geographic. "The provocative world of Silicon Valley has long dominated headlines and captured the public's imagination. We cannot wait to tell this timely, wildly unpredictable and captivating story of the early days of the dotcom boom and bust with showrunner Matthew Carnahan and his signature irreverent blend of drama, comedy and pathos."
"Valley of the Boom is the perfect example of the creatively ambitious, globally-minded content that STXtv is producing for audiences across platforms," said Jada Miranda, EVP and Head of Scripted Television at STXtv. "Matthew has been a dream collaborator and the perfect creator for this project - blending his past in documentary filmmaking with expert TV series show running. We're thrilled to bring his innovative vision to National Geographic and give audiences a peek behind the curtain of one of the most fascinating periods in recent history."

Added Carnahan, "We wanted to make something as disruptive and exciting as the people and the tech that came out of The Valley during this period, so this is a wild, hybridized, rule-breaking look at a truly remarkable time and place.

STXtv and NatGeo have allowed us tremendous creative freedom, and I'm excited about making something truly new and different."

"Silicon Valley and the technology that came out of it dominate our world in so many ways, both physically and culturally," said Arianna Huffington. "But we can't understand the present without understanding how we got here. So I'm thrilled to be partnering with a master storyteller like Matthew Carnahan, a global studio of STXtv's caliber and a brand that has rightly earned such deep trust and loyalty as National Geographic."

Led by Silicon Valley, the 1990s tech boom spawned some of the world's most influential people and recognizable brands. Valley of the Boom details their meteoric rise and cataclysmic fall and offers audiences an unforgettable perspective on the men and women who forever changed the way we access information and connect with each other. While most of the show is scripted, the series will be using select doc elements to highlight this story that truly lives up to the adage that truth is stranger than fiction.

Matthew Carnahan is a critically acclaimed novelist, playwright, director and writer for television and features. His most recent series, HOUSE OF LIES starred Don Cheadle and Kristen Bell. The award-winning series ran for five seasons on Showtime and won Cheadle a Golden Globe for Best Actor. He is repped by ICM & Lighthouse Management & Media.

Carnahan and Huffington are joined by fellow executive producers Jason Goldberg (E!'s The Platinum Life, MTV's Punk'd), Brant Pinvidic (Spike TV's Bar Rescue), David Walpert (House of Lies, New Girl) and co-executive producer David Newsom, who will lead the non-scripted unit of the production. Joel Ehninger of Matthew Carnahan Circus Products boards as producer.
