NEW ADAPTATION OF THE CLASSIC MYSTERY

“THE WOMAN IN WHITE”

Available on Digital Beginning October 22

Arlington, Va. – October 23, 2018 – PBS Distribution announces the DVD and digital release of “THE WOMAN IN WHITE” based on the 19^th century mystery novel by Wilkie Collins. This five-part screen adaptation brings to life the secrets, mistaken identities, surprise revelations, amnesia, locked rooms and asylums, that made this mystery thriller an instant success when it was published in 1868. Episodes of “THE WOMAN IN WHITE” will be available for digital download the day after broadcast beginning October 22, 2018 and the full series will be available on DVD ($34.99 SRP) November 6, 2018. The run time of the program is approximately 275 minutes, with five parts.

The program begins when Walter Hartright (Ben Hardy, Bohemian Rhapsody), a young drawing master, encounters a spectral woman dressed all in white on a moonlit road on Hampstead Heath. After offering his assistance to the strange woman, he is shocked to discover that she has just escaped from a nearby insane asylum. The encounter draws him into a web of mystery and deception that transforms his life forever.

Shortly afterwards, Walter takes up a teaching position in the Cumbrian village of Limmeridge. There, he meets his pupils – the clever, bold Marian Halcombe (Jessie Buckley, “Taboo”), and the beautiful, sweet-natured Laura Fairlie (Olivia Vinall, Where Hands Touch). Walter notices that Laura bears an uncanny resemblance to the mysterious woman in white, who was known to the household as Anne Catherick (also Olivia Vinall): a mentally disabled child who grew up in the village. Over the next few months, Walter and Laura fall deeply in love. However, she is promised in marriage to Sir Percival Glyde (Dougray Scott, Mission: Impossible II), a charming local Baronet with a secret he will do anything to protect.

Soon after the wedding, Glyde’s true cruel nature begins to emerge. Conspiring with his companion, the compelling and Machiavellian Count Fosco, he enacts a terrible plan to access his new wife’s considerable fortune. Marian and Walter toil to rescue Laura and expose the unscrupulous, scheming masterminds and their twisted conspiracy.

“THE WOMAN IN WHITE” is executive produced by David M. Thompson of Origin Pictures and Mona Qureshi of the BBC. The series is produced by Sarah Curtis, directed by Carl Tibbets, and was adapted from the novel by writer, Fiona Series and distributed internationally by Endemol Shine International. Based on what is widely considered to be among the first mystery novels, The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins was written in 1859 and was considered a commercial success and cultural sensation at the time.

ARLINGTON, VA; September 24, 2018 – THE WOMAN IN WHITE, a new television series adapted from the 19^th century mystery novel by Wilkie Collins, will air on PBS beginning Sunday, October 21, 2018, 10:00-11:00 p.m. ET through November 18 (check local listings) and will stream nationally on PBS.org 

The five-part series stars Jessie Buckley (“Taboo”) as the strong-minded heroine Marian Halcombe; Ben Hardy (Bohemian Rhapsody) as the young teacher Walter Hartright; Olivia Vinall (Where Hands Touch) as the heiress Laura Fairlie; Dougray Scott (Mission: Impossible II) as the villainous Sir Percival Glyde; and Charles Dance (“Game of Thrones”) as Mr. Frederick Fairlie, the uncle of Laura and Marian.
