‘WHEN WE RISE: THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE STORY’
One-Hour Documentary Chronicling Revolutionary LGBT Men and Women of Gay Rights Movement Airs Thursday, March 2, on ABC
 
“When We Rise: The People Behind the Story” is a one-hour documentary complementing ABC’s scripted mini-series “When We Rise” by chronicling the personal and political struggles, setbacks, and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBTQ people who helped pioneer the U.S. Civil Rights struggle. The documentary will recount the true stories and history of the gay rights movement through the actual voices of the people who inspired the mini-series: Cleve Jones, Roma Guy, Ken Jones, Diane Jones and Cecilia Chung. We’ll also interview the actors that portray them throughout the series. Hearing from the people who lived through this historic event coupled with the actors will give viewers a fresh, personal and unprecedented perspective of their inspiring journey.  

“When We Rise: The People Behind the Storyairs on THURSDAY, MARCH 2 (8:00–9:00 pm EST), on The ABC Television Network. The documentary is produced by ABC’s Lincoln Square Productions. Marc Victor is the executive producer.

ABC Announces Air-Schedule Change for ‘When We Rise’

ABC’S ‘WHEN WE RISE’ AIR-SCHEDULE CHANGE
Due to ABC News’ special report, “President Donald Trump’s Address to Congress,” taking place on Tuesday, February 28, the “When We Rise” air schedule will effectively change.
The revised air schedule is as follows:

MONDAY, FEBRUARY 27:
9:00-11:00 p.m.          “WHEN WE RISE” Premiere
TUEDAY, FEBRUARY 28:
9:00-11:00 p.m.          ABC News Special Report: President Donald Trump’s Address to Congress
WEDNESDAY, MARCH 1:
9:00-11:00 p.m.          “WHEN WE RISE” Parts II and III
THURSDAY, MARCH 2:
9:00-11:00 p.m.          “WHEN WE RISE” Parts IV and V
FRIDAY, MARCH 3:
9:00-11:00 p.m.          “WHEN WE RISE” Parts VI and VII

This miniseries from Academy Award-winner Dustin Lance Black was recently awarded the Audience Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

“When We Rise” chronicles the real-life personal and political struggles, set-backs and triumphs of a diverse family of LGBT men and women, who helped pioneer one of the last legs of the U.S. Civil Rights movement from its turbulent infancy in the 20th century to the once unfathomable successes of today.

Starring in the miniseries are Guy Pearce (“Memento,” “L.A. Confidential”) as LGBT activist Cleve Jones, Mary-Louise Parker (“Weeds,” “Angels in America”) as women’s rights leader Roma Guy, Rachel Griffiths (“Brothers and Sisters,” “Six Feet Under”) as her wife, social justice activist Diane, Michael K. Williams (“Boardwalk Empire,”“The Wire”) as African American community organizer Ken Jones and Ivory Aquino as transgender activist Cecelia Chung.
Joining them are Austin McKenzie (“Spring Awakening”) as Younger Cleve Jones, Emily Skeggs (“Fun Home”) as Younger Roma Guy, newcomer Jonathan Majors as Younger Ken Jones, and Fiona Dourif (“The Master”) as Younger Diane.

“When We Rise” is executive produced by the Dustin Lance Black (“Milk,” ”Big Love,” “J. Edgar”), Gus Van Sant (“Milk,” “Elephant,” “Good Will Hunting”) Laurence Mark (“Julie & Julia,”“Dreamgirls,”“I, Robot,” “Jerry Maguire”), and Bruce Cohen (“American Beauty,” “Milk,” “Silver Linings Playbook”). Van Sant directs the two-hour premiere of the eight-hour mini-series event. “When We Rise” is produced by ABC Studios.
