UNCENSORED, which gives unprecedented access to your favorite personalities, follows at 10 p.m ET/9C with actress Tichina Arnold.
UNSUNG HOLLYWOOD
Multi-Emmy Award winning comic, singer and actor Wayne Brady broke barriers as one of the first African Americans to specialize in improvisational humor but his success triggered backlash from some members of the black community who felt his style was too safe. On Sunday, October 21 at 9/8C, Wayne Brady reveals to UNSUNG HOLLYWOOD his professional ups and downs, and personal struggles that nearly cost him his career and life.
Wayne Brady shot to fame on the primetime hit series "Whose Line Is It Anyway" where his quick-witted riffs earned him an Emmy award in 1993. He went on to star in his own variety show, "The Wayne Brady Show," as well as a talk show of the same name, for which he would win four more Emmy's. While he gained mainstream popularity, his style of comedy didn't go over well with all audiences. Many in the black community felt he watered down his style in attempts to be more likeable. In true comedic fashion, Wayne Brady responded to his critics with an unforgettable portrayal of a ruthless, hardcore gangster on the "Dave Chappelle Show." He continued to demonstrate his versatility as a performer when he released a rendition of the Sam Cooke classic "Change is Gonna Come," which earned him a Grammy nomination in 2008. Wayne Brady hosted Fox's "Don't Forget the Lyrics" and currently hosts the classic CBS daytime game show "Let's Make a Deal." For all of his accolades, his personal life has been filled with divorce, drinking and a longtime battle with clinical depression. Hollywood leading lady Tichina Arnold has captivated audiences with her quick wit and undeniable charm for over four decades. On the next episode of TV One's hit auto-biographical series UNCENSORED airing Sunday, October 21 at 10/9C, Tichina Arnold discusses her rise from humble beginnings and the challenges of balancing a successful career with motherhood.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Tichina Arnold was encouraged by her family early on to pursue her dreams of acting. After landing her first role in a play, she knew acting was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life. She eventually booked her first acting job on the soap opera "Ryan's Hope" and went on to land a major role in the film "Little Shop of Horrors," where she would meet her longtime best friend Tisha Campbell.
Together, they ventured to California and Tichina secured a string of roles in hit shows including "All My Children," "Martin," "Everybody Hates Chris," and "Survivors Remorse." Her years of success were also accompanied by loss and hardships but she remained focused on her dreams. A three-time NAACP Image Award winner, Tichina Arnold finds joy in her most challenging role to date - motherhood. Malcolm D. Lee's directorial debut, The Best Man, featured unforgettable characters, a dream cast and a hot soundtrack. But despite its universal storyline, it was marketed as a "black film" and ultimately failed to have the mass appeal Lee had been seeking.
RAY J
Singer, Actor, Reality TV star: Few performers are as versatile as Ray J. But his success as a singer and TV actor were ultimately overshadowed by a sex tape with Kim Kardashian, and bouts with alcohol and depression.
WAYNE BRADY
Wayne Brady shot to fame on "Whose Line Is It Anyway," winning his first Emmy in 1993. Known for his "nice guy" image he shocked the world by playing the villain on "Chappelle's Show." In 2014, Wayne Brady revealed his longtime battle with clinical depression that nearly cost him his career and his life.
RICKEY SMILEYStand-up comic, TV host, actor, recording artist and radio personality, Broderick "Rickey" Smiley could do it all. But his comedic roots harken to a painful, poverty-stricken childhood in the rural south that was anything but funny.

An Original King of Comedy, D.L. Hughley was raised in Los Angeles and no stranger to his neighborhood gangs, which provided a sense of structure, family and community. Dropping out of high school as a self-proclaimed "dummy" he joined the LAPD Academy, quit and married his wife of over 30 years to start a family. His work ethic is unapologetically driven and dedicated to providing for his loved ones, and his motivation to leave a legacy led to the transition of his comedy from frivolous jokes to political topics inspiring change.

SILVER SPRING, MD. – October 19, 2017 – TV One presents two special editions of Unsung: Hollywood featuring the legendary television show The Jeffersons, premiering Sunday, October 22 at 10 p.m. ET; and rapper and actor Tupac, premiering Sunday, October 29 at 10 p.m. ET.
“With the success of Unsung focused on music, it’s a natural extension for TV One to create the Unsung Hollywood spin-off featuring legends outside of the music industry because there are so many of our stories that need to be told,” says TV One Interim General Manager Michelle Rice. “The Jeffersons was a successful television show in the Black community at its inception and TV One is honored to air it in syndication so that its humor can bring joy to new generations. Similarly, Tupac Shakur was a phenomenal rapper and activist who was building an exemplary acting career. We know our viewers will be pleasantly surprised by insights they learn through Unsung Hollywood.”
One of the most acclaimed and successful sitcoms of all time, The Jeffersons made history as the first series to showcase an upwardly mobile black family in primetime, and in so doing changed perceptions about African American life on and off screen. For 11 ground-breaking seasons, The Jeffersons kept America laughing while pushing hot button issues like racism, classism, interracial marriage, gender identity and women’s rights. Along the way, the series garnered 13 Emmy nominations, and made iconic stars out of Sherman Hemsley, Isabel Sanford and Marla Gibbs. When Sanford won in 1981, she was just the second African American actress to win an Emmy Award.
“Most viewers do not know the stories behind the series. You can’t give enough credit to Norman Lear who was brave enough to create and spearhead the show as a spin off from All in the Family,” says Jubba Seyyid, Senior Director of Programming & Production. “The audience will be surprised to hear some of the tales of their favorite characters on television. This is one of those episodes of Unsung Hollywood where you’ll laugh, cry and learn.”
In addition to commentary from Marla Gibbs, insights for Unsung Hollywood: The Jeffersons are provided by family and friends, including Norman Lear, Berlinda Tolbert, Don B. Welch and Ernest L. Thomas.
On Sunday, October 29, Unsung Hollywood explores the fascinating B side of Tupac’s career in entertainment – his remarkable body of work in film and TV.
“Tupac is iconic and he transcends music and television. We’ve heard his story told before, but as a musician. We don’t think he got credit for his acting prowess,” says Seyyid. “He was as talented an actor as he was a musician. Actually, he was a triple threat: Music, acting and activism. Possibly if he hadn’t left us, he would be participating in Oscar-worthy performances by now because that’s just the type of talent he was.”
The legendary rapper Tupac actually had a passion for acting before he got into hip-hop. At the age of 12 Tupac was cast in A Raisin in the Sun at the Apollo Theater, and the desire to perform on stage stayed with him for the rest of his life. As a teen, Tupac attended the Baltimore School for the Arts, where he fell in love with Shakespeare and Broadway, and where he formed a close and lifelong friendship with Jada Pinkett Smith.
As his rap career took off, Tupac never took his eye off his other dream. In 1991, with “2Pacalypse” going gold, he landed a starring role in “Juice,” which was a critical and commercial success. That led to other acclaimed roles, including standout turns in “Poetic Justice” and “Above the Rim.” Pac was poised to become a major Hollywood star, but criminal charges, prison time, rap feuds and other beefs got in the way. He was fired from “Menace II Society” after getting into a conflict with director Allen Hughes, whom he later assaulted. A week before he was gunned down in Las Vegas in 1996, Pac met with John Singleton, who wanted him to star in the classic coming of age film, “Baby Boy”. In the year after he died, he appeared in three more films, “Bullet” with Mickey Rourke, “Gridlock’d,” opposite Thandie Newton and “Gang Related.”
