In the early morning hours on Feb. 15, Los Angeles police officers responding to a call of a “woman screaming” found 38-year-old Harwick lying on the ground, battered and unresponsive beneath the third-floor balcony of her Hollywood home. According to police, inside her apartment there was evidence of a struggle and forced entry. Harwick was transported to a hospital, where she later died from blunt-force injuries to the head and torso, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner. The medical examiner also indicated that Harwick had been strangled before falling over the balcony. A trail of evidence soon led homicide investigators to Harwick’s ex-boyfriend, 41-year-old Gareth Pursehouse.
The hour featured Moriarty’s revealing, emotional interviews with friends who opened up about her fears of abuse and how her work deeply helped others. The broadcast also included people who knew Pursehouse and have first-hand knowledge of how he felt about Harwick.

“48 HOURS: THE PLOT TO KILL DR. SIEVERS” IS SATURDAY’S #1 NON-SPORTS PRIMETIME PROGRAM WITH VIEWERS
(L-R) Dr. Teresa Sievers, Curtis Wayne Wright and Mark Sievers
Click Here to Watch This Broadcast
48 HOURS: “The Plot to Kill Dr. Sievers” was Saturday’s #1 primetime non-sports broadcast program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Saturday, Feb. 15. The broadcast delivered 3.42 million viewers, a 0.7/03 with adults 25-54 and a 0.4/03 with adults 18-49.
48 HOURS was up +40% in adults 25-54, +33% in adults 18-49 and +24% in viewers, when compared to the same night a year ago.
Saturday’s broadcast featured Erin Moriarty and 48 HOURS’ investigation into the murder of Dr. Teresa Sievers and the search by Lee County Sheriff’s deputies to find who killed her. Sievers was found bludgeoned to death in the kitchen of her Bonita Springs, Fla., home in 2015. There were no immediate suspects, and her husband, Mark Sievers, had an airtight alibi.
A tip led deputies on a 1,100-mile trek and turned up unlikely suspects: career criminal Jimmy Ray Rodgers and Curtis Wayne Wright, Mark Sievers’ best friend who also happened to look just like Sievers. Wright even shaved his head when Sievers started losing his hair.
Mark Sievers, who was away from home with the couple’s two daughters when his wife was murdered, immediately spoke to police without an attorney. Then, two months after the murder, police made a stunning announcement with the arrests of Rodgers and Wright. The case would be far from closed with the initial arrests. Instead, the arrests led to more questions about what happened, and another unexpected twist at Wright’s murder trial. When he was asked who killed Dr. Sievers, Wright said Rodgers and he “physically did it, but Mark Sievers was also involved in the planning.”
Prosecutors made their case by using evidence they gathered from a large digital footprint left behind by the killers, from a GPS unit they used, which traced their path from Missouri to the Sievers’ home, to cell phone records and security camera video from a Walmart store, where they purchased multiple items used in the murder.
48 HOURS: “The Plot to Kill Dr. Sievers” is produced by Marcelena Spencer, Susan Mallie and Lisa Freed. Kayla Laine, Jordan Kinsey and Dena Goldstein are the associate producers. “48 HOURS: THE CASE AGAINST EZRA MCCANDLESS” IS SATURDAY’S #1 PRIMETIME PROGRAM WITH VIEWERS
Click Here to Watch This Broadcast
48 HOURS: “The Case Against Ezra McCandless” was Saturday’s #1 primetime program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Saturday, Feb. 8. The broadcast delivered 3.39 million viewers and a 0.7/03 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news.
Saturday’s broadcast featured Jamie Yuccas and 48 HOURS’ investigation into the case against Ezra McCandless, a young Wisconsin woman who told police a harrowing story of how her ex-boyfriend carved the word “boy” into her arm and then attacked her. She said she then stabbed him 16 times in self-defense. McCandless was only 22 years old when she took the stand in her own defense at her trial. She appeared meek and timid and wore pink, and the small-statured woman seemed an unlikely killer. Prosecutors knew that the case boiled down to whether jurors would believe McCandless was a brave victim fighting off her attacker or a desperate liar playing a master con.
Yuccas and 48 HOURS took viewers inside the investigation and into the courtroom where McCandless faced a life sentence for murder. No one quite knew what to expect from a woman described by friends as someone who sought attention.
48 HOURS: “The Case Against Ezra McCandless” is produced by Jonathan Leach and Paul LaRosa. Emma Steele is the associate producer. Julie Kramer is the development producer. Mike Vele, Karen Brenner, Michelle Harris and Joan Adelman are the editors. Gail Zimmerman is the senior producer. Nancy Kramer is the executive story editor. Judy Tygard is the executive producer.

“48 HOURS: THE DEATH OF TODD STERMER” IS SATURDAY’S #1 PRIMETIME PROGRAM WITH VIEWERS

Click Here to Watch This Broadcast
48 HOURS: “The Death of Todd Stermer” was Saturday’s #1 primetime program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Saturday, Feb. 1. The broadcast delivered 3.67 million viewers and a 0.6/03 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news. 48 HOURS added +180,000 viewers from the previous week.
Saturday’s broadcast featured Erin Moriarty and 48 HOURS’ investigation into the death of Todd Stermer and the case against his wife, Linda Stermer, who was accused of setting fire to their family home and killing her husband. The broadcast featured Linda Stermer’s first interview.
On Jan. 7, 2007, while Stermer and her husband, Todd, were home, their house burst into flames. Linda Stermer got out safely. Her husband was also able to get out, but he was horribly burned. Linda Stermer says she got in the family’s van to get help. And then she saw her husband had gotten out of the house. She said she got back in the van. But, in a shocking twist, Todd Stermer, after escaping the fire, was run over by his wife. She maintains it was an accident. Prosecutors disagree.
48 HOURS takes viewers inside the case that split a family and continues to play out in the courts. The investigation into what happened revealed a fractured family and a couple on the brink of breaking up. After the fire and the death of Todd Stermer, there were allegations of domestic abuse, battles over money and accusations that Linda was having an affair.
In 2009 Linda Stermer was charged with arson and murder. She was convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Stermer has maintained throughout that she doesn’t know how the fire started and that running over her husband was purely an accident. While in prison, she put together her own appeal. With the help of a new attorney, she convinced a judge she had an unfair trial and was freed in 2018. But authorities in Michigan are appealing that decision. Stermer is awaiting a court’s decision on her fate.
48 HOURS: “The Death of Todd Stermer” is produced by Judy Rybak. Alicia Tejada is the field producer. Kat Teurfs is the associate producer. Jud Johnston and Grayce Arlotta-Berner are the editors. Patti Aronofsky is the senior producer. Nancy Kramer is the executive story editor. Judy Tygard is the executive producer.
