IFC FILMS RETEAMS WITH CHRISTIAN PETZOLD ON BERLINALE WORLD PREMIERE “UNDINE”, STARRING PAULA BEER AND FRANZ ROGOWSKI

IFC FILMS RETEAMS WITH CHRISTIAN PETZOLD ON BERLINALE WORLD PREMIERE “UNDINE”, STARRING PAULA BEER AND FRANZ ROGOWSKI

NEW YORK, NY (February 25, 2020) — IFC Films announced today that it is acquiring U.S rights to UNDINE written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Christian Petzold (PHOENIX, BARBARA, TRANSIT), starring Paula Beer (TRANSIT, FRANTZ) and Franz Rogowski (TRANSIT). In Petzold has previously won the Silver Bear at the 2012 Berlin International Film Festival for his film BARBARA, and was also selected as the German entry for the Best Foreign Language Oscar at the 85th Academy Awards. UNDINE premiered in competition in the 2020 Berlin Film Festival. IFC Films will release the film in the fall of 2020.
In UNDINE, Petzold reworks the ancient myth of the mysterious water spirit in the modern world. Set in Berlin, UNDINE works as a historian lecturing on Berlin’s urban development. She knows all about the Humboldt Forum, and has a knack for dressing.  She is nonchalantly beautiful, and the way she imparts her knowledge about the city that was built on a swamp is as professional as it is graceful. But Undine’s world collapses when the man she loves leaves her. Soon the ancient myth catches up with her and Undine has to kill the man who betrays her and return to the water. UNDINE is the story of a life-or-death love, splendidly and effortlessly told.
Arianna Bocco EVP of Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films said, “We are so excited to be back in business with Christian again after the successful release of PHOENIX. He is one of the most exciting filmmakers working in film today and we are delighted to bring UNDINE to cinemas nationwide.”
Director, Christian Petzold added, “I am thrilled that IFC Films has picked up UNDINE for US Distribution. I am looking forward to showing the film in the theaters around the country and am excited to see how it will be received by the American audiences.”
The deal for the film was negotiated by IFC Films with The Match Factory on behalf of the filmmaker.

IFC FILMS ACQUIRES JAMES D’ARCY’S HEART-WARMING MADE IN ITALY STARRING LIAM NEESON AND MICHEÁL RICHARDSON

IFC FILMS ACQUIRES JAMES D’ARCY’S HEART-WARMING MADE IN ITALY STARRING LIAM NEESON AND MICHEÁL RICHARDSON

IFC Films Plans Theatrical Summer Release
London, February 24, 2020 — IFC Films and HanWay Films announced today that IFC Films is acquiring U.S. distribution rights to writer and director James D’Arcy’s feature screenplay and directorial debut, Made In Italy. The heart-warming film stars Liam Neeson as Robert, a bohemian London artist who returns to Italy with his estranged son played by Micheál Richardson (Vox Lux), to sell the house they inherited from his late wife. The deal was negotiated between HanWay Films MD Gabrielle Stewart and Arianna Bocco, EVP of Acquisitions and Productions at IFC Films. Made In Italy will receive a traditional theatrical release in the U.S. during the summer of 2020.
HanWay Films MD Gabrielle Stewart commented; “We are really thrilled to be partnering with IFC and excited to support their strategy of making Made In Italy their big summer theatrical release. From the very beginning this has been a very personal labor of love for all involved and they have fully embraced that.”
Arianna Bocco, EVP of Acquisitions and Productions at IFC Films said, “IFC has a long and dedicated history of supporting first-time filmmakers and their passion projects. Made In Italy is the complete package and we are excited to work with talent like James, Liam and Micheál to bring this special story to American audiences this summer.”
Made In Italy is a heart-warming father son story set in glorious Tuscany about bohemian London artist Robert (Neeson), who returns to Italy with his estranged son Jack (Richardson) to make a quick sale of the house they inherited from his late wife. Neither expects to find the once beautiful villa in such a state of disrepair…
Renovations go badly, with father and son soon finding themselves at odds. Robert’s comical lack of DIY experience leads him to seek help from some colourful locals including the no nonsense Kate (Duncan), an ex-pat making her living selling villas who quickly captures his attention. For Jack, the state of the house seems to mirror his search for memories of happier times with his mother. He soon falls for Natalia (Bilello), a vivacious young Italian chef, who restores both body and soul with delights from her local trattoria – until the pair find their developing relationship in jeopardy from Natalia’s jealous and threatening ex-husband.
As Robert and Jack painstakingly restore the villa to its previous glory, they also start to mend their relationship. The future may now look quite different and surprise them both.
The film also stars Lindsay Duncan and Valeria Bilello. D’Arcy directed and wrote the screenplay. It is produced by Pippa Cross and Sam Tipper-Hale for CrossDay Productions in collaboration with Indiana Production S.P.A. Ingenious Media fully funded the production with the support of the Tuscan Film Commission.
Neeson is represented by CAA and ARG, Richardson by Gersh and ARG, and D’Arcy by Markham Froggatt and Irwin.

IFC FILMS SNAGS COMING-OF-AGE COMEDY ‘HOW TO BUILD A GIRL’ STARRING BEANIE FELDSTEIN, BASED ON BESTSELLING NOVEL FROM CAITLIN MORAN

NEW YORK, NY (NOVEMBER 9, 2019) – IFC Films is acquiring North American rights to Coky Giedroyć’s HOW TO BUILD A GIRL (Hulu’s “Harlots,” BBC America’s “The Hour,” BBC’s “Oliver Twist,” AMC’s “The Killing”), an adaptation by Caitlin Moran of her bestselling, semi-autobiographical novel of the same name, starring Beanie Feldstein (BOOKSMART, LADYBIRD), Paddy Considine (“Peaky Blinders,” TYRANNOSAUR), and Alfie Allen (“Game of Thrones,” JOJO RABBIT).
The deal for the film was negotiated by Arianna Bocco EVP of Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films with Endeavor Content on behalf of the filmmakers. Protagonist Pictures are handling worldwide sales, and as previously announced, Lionsgate will be distributing in the UK.
The film is produced by Alison Owen (ME BEFORE YOU, SUFFRAGETTE, SAVING MR. BANKS) and Debra Hayward (BRIDGET JONES’S BABY, LES MISERABLES) and executive produced by  Daniel Battsek, Ollie Madden and Sue Bruce-Smith for Film4, Tim Headington and Lia Buman for Tango, Zygi Kamasa and Emma Berkofsky for Lionsgate, and Caitlin Moran.
Emma Thompson, Chris O’Dowd, Sarah Solemani, Laurie Kynaston, Frank Dillane, and Arinze Kene round out the cast. The film had its world premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival and will be released by IFC Films in 2020.
Johanna Morrigan (Beanie Feldstein) is a sixteen-year-old, extrovert from the outskirts of Wolverhampton with raging hormones and gigantic dreams. Even though she loves her big, boisterous family, Johanna yearns to get out and make a name for herself – which she does, reinventing herself as revered and feared music journalist, Dolly Wilde. But as her critical savagery brings her greater and greater success, the lines between Johanna Morrigan and Dolly Wilde begin to haze. She has finally figured out how to build a girl – but is this the girl she wanted to build? HOW TO BUILD A GIRL is an irreverent coming-of-age comedy about what it’s really like to be a girl.
Arianna Bocco of IFC Films said, “We are overjoyed to release HOW TO BUILD A GIRL and work with the impressive list of women in front of and behind the camera. Caitlin Moran is a supremely talented writer with such a unique and distinct voice and we can’t wait to share this film and Beanie’s performance with American audiences.”
“Monumental Pictures and the HOW TO BUILD A GIRL team are beyond thrilled to be working with the IFC team,” says Alison Owen. “Their incredible track record and deep understanding of our film led us to conclude they are the perfect partners to take our precious GIRL on the next step of her journey.”

IFC MIDNIGHT NABS CONSPIRACY THRILLER “DISAPPEARANCE AT CLIFTON HILL”

IFC MIDNIGHT NABS CONSPIRACY THRILLER “DISAPPEARANCE AT CLIFTON HILL”

STARRING TUPPENCE MIDDLETON, HANNAH GROSS AND LEGENDARY FILMMAKER DAVID CRONENBERG
NEW YORK, NY (NOVEMBER 6, 2019) – IFC Midnight is acquiring U.S. rights to DISAPPEARANCE AT CLIFTON HILL (formerly CLIFTON HILL) directed by Albert Shin (IN HER PLACE) and co-written with newcomer James Schultz. The film stars Tuppence Middleton (DOWNTON ABBEY, THE CURRENT WAR) Hannah Gross (THE MOUNTAIN, “Mindhunter”), David Cronenberg (CRASH, NAKED LUNCH), Eric Johnson (FIFTY SHADES FREED, “The Knick”), and Marie-Josée Croze (MAELSTROM, ARARAT). Produced by Kevin Krikst and Fraser Ash of award-winning production company Rhombus Media, and executive produced by Rhombus’ Niv Fichman, with Adrian Love and Omar Chalabi of Elevation Pictures.
This is the third feature from Albert Shin, who’s IN HER PLACE was named to TIFF’s 2014 Canada’s Top Ten. DISAPPEARANCE AT CLIFTON HILL had its World Premiere at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, and IFC Midnight will release the film on February 28th, 2020.
When Abby (Tuppence Middleton) returns to her hometown of Niagara Falls after her mother dies, she becomes obsessed with a fragmented memory from her childhood — a kidnapping she believes she was witness to. She is reunited with her estranged younger sister, Laure (Hannah Gross), and they attempt to settle their mother’s estate involving the sale of the family motel, but Abby’s compulsive desire to reconcile her past grows increasingly out of control.
The key to the case lies somewhere in the heart of Clifton Hill – Niagara Falls’ answer to the Vegas strip – a place where reality and fantasy blend together and nothing is as it seems. But after the lights go out and the Ferris wheel stops turning, Abby learns that truth is always stranger than fiction.
Arianna Bocco EVP of Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films said, “This is exactly the kind of suspenseful drama with a compelling atmosphere that audiences will be drawn to. We’re thrilled to be working with such a talented and committed team of filmmakers to bring this film to the U.S.”
Director Albert Shin added, “Niagara Falls is a weird and wonderful place and I’m incredibly excited to partner with IFC Midnight, which has always been a home for weird and wonderful films.”
DISAPPEARANCE AT CLIFTON HILL received financial support from CBC Films through its diverse Canadian filmmaker fund, and is produced with the participation, Telefilm Canada and Ontario Creates. Elevation Pictures will distribute the film in Canada.
The deal was negotiated by Arianna Bocco and Aijah Keith of IFC Films with WTFilms on behalf of the filmmakers.

IFC FILMS LANDS UNPRECEDENTED TRUE-STORY ‘THREE CHRISTS’ STARRING RICHARD GERE, PETER DINKLAGE, WALTON GOGGINS, AND BRADLEY WHITFORD

IFC FILMS LANDS UNPRECEDENTED TRUE-STORY ‘THREE CHRISTS’ STARRING RICHARD GERE, PETER DINKLAGE, WALTON GOGGINS, AND BRADLEY WHITFORD

NEW YORK, NY (October 30, 2019) – IFC Films announced today that it is acquiring U.S. rights to THREE CHRISTS directed by Jon Avnet (FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL, JUSTIFIED) and co-written by Eric Nazarian and Jon Avnet, based on Milton Rokeach’s ground breaking and controversial experiment chronicled in his book, “The Three Christs of Ypsilanti.”  The film stars Richard Gere (PRETTY WOMAN, DAYS OF HEAVEN, NORMAN), Peter Dinklage (GAME OF THRONES, THE STATION AGENT), Walton Goggins (JUSTIFIED, THE HATEFUL EIGHT, THE UNICORN), Bradley Whitford (THE WEST WING, GET OUT) Julianna Margulies (THE GOOD WIFE, ER), and Charlotte Hope (GAME OF THRONES, THE SPANISH PRINCESS). The film was produced by Daniel Levin, Molly Hassel, Jon Avnet and Dr. Aaron Stern.  IFC Films will be releasing the film theatrically on January 3rd, 2020.
Based on the true-life 1959 experiment at Michigan’s Ypsilanti State Hospital, THREE CHRISTS is the story of psychiatrist Dr. Alan Stone (Richard Gere) whose paranoid schizophrenic patient (Peter Dinklage) believes he is Jesus Christ. Unwilling to use brutal electroshock therapy, Dr. Stone instead begins a risky, unprecedented experiment by transferring his patient to live together with two other paranoid schizophrenics who also believe they are Jesus (Bradley Whitford, Walton Goggins). Their free-spirited, delightful chaos clashes with Stone’s colleagues who were intent on preserving the soul-numbing routine of the institution at all costs. Stone’s radical belief that paranoid schizophrenic patients should be treated not with confinement and electroshock therapy but with empathy and understanding will push the boundaries of psychiatric medicine and leave everyone involved – including Dr. Stone – profoundly changed. THREE CHRISTS is a fascinating and moving look at one man’s journey into the deepest mysteries of the human mind.
Arianna Bocco EVP of Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films said, “We’re excited to be working with such an established filmmaker as Jon Avnet to bring this heartfelt and deeply relevant true-story about the road to find more humanity in mental health practices to audiences across the US.”
Lisa Schwartz, Co-President of IFC Films added, “We’re thrilled to be working with a stellar cast that truly brings this deeply felt and extraordinary true-story to life.”
Director Jon Avnet added, “Working with Richard, Peter, Walton, Bradley as well as Julianna Margulies, Jane Alexander, Kevin Pollak, Stephen Root and Charlotte Hope was a guilty pleasure.  Their dedication and skill in bringing to the big screen this story of empathy and compassion to those suffering from mental illness was exhilarating and humbling.”
THREE CHRISTS was financed by Narrative Capital’s media fund. The deal for the film was negotiated by Arianna Bocco and Betsy Rodgers of IFC Films with CAA Media Finance and Marc H. Simon of Fox Rothschild LLP on behalf of the filmmakers.
