CBS Ratings - January 2018

“48 HOURS: SINS OF THE FATHER” IS SATURDAY’S #1 NON-SPORTS PRIME PROGRAM WITH VIEWERS
Watch This Broadcast Here
48 HOURS: “Sins of the Father” was Saturday’s #1 non-sports primetime program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Jan. 27. The broadcast delivered 4.10 million viewers and a 0.8/03 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most with those who advertise in news.
Saturday’s broadcast featured Richard Schlesinger and 48 HOURS’ investigation into the disappearance and murder of Irene Garza nearly 60 years ago and the murder case against John Feit, the former priest accused of murdering her. It’s a case 48 HOURS has been reporting on for five years.
In 1960, Garza, 25, told her family she was going to church for confession. She never returned. Five days later her body was found dumped in a canal. Police say she was beaten, sexually assaulted and suffocated. Investigators questioned hundreds of people, but they kept turning to one person: Feit, then 27, who admitted hearing Garza’s last confession in the church rectory. Investigators only grew more suspicious when they learned that three weeks before Garza’s murder, another woman – Maria America Guerra – had been attacked in a nearby church. That woman later identified Feit as her attacker.
Feit would eventually plead no contest to aggravated assault in the Guerra case and was fined $500, but the investigation in the Irene Garza murder eventually stopped, and the case went cold. For decades, rumors swirled that there had been a conspiracy between the authorities and the Church to cover up the crime. The case was reopened in 2002 when the McAllen Police Department asked the Texas Rangers’ cold case unit to re-examine the murder. The investigation took a turn when a former monk, Dale Tacheny, told police that back in 1963, when he was counseling novice monks at a monastery, Feit had admitted to killing a young woman on Easter weekend. Another priest also came forward saying Feit had made a similar admission to him as well. Yet the former district attorney at the time, Rene Guerra, didn’t find the new witnesses credible, and the case would go nowhere. Garza’s family felt they had been denied justice again. In 2014, when confronted by 48 HOURS about the allegations, Feit told Schlesinger he didn’t kill Garza and does not know who did.
Shortly after 48 HOURS’ first broadcast on the case, “The Last Confession,” was presented in 2014, a new DA was elected who promised to look into the case. On Feb. 9, 2016, Feit was arrested in Scottsdale, Ariz. and charged with murder.
In December 2017, Feit was convicted of murdering Garza.

“ALL-AMERICAN MURDER,” A “48 HOURS” SPECIAL, IS SATURDAY’S #1 PRIMETIME PROGRAM WITH VIEWERS

48 Hours” Posts Best Viewer Delivery since Oct. 28, 2017
Click Here to Watch This Broadcast
“All-American Murder,” a 48 HOURS special, was Saturday’s #1 primetime program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Jan. 20.
The broadcast delivered 4.66 million viewers and a 0.9/03 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news. This broadcast marked 48 HOURS’ best audience delivery since Oct. 28, 2017 and best adults 25-54 rating since Nov. 18, 2017.
Compared to the last original 48 HOURS edition, Saturday’s broadcast was up +18% in viewers (from 3.96m) and up +13% in adults 25-54 (from 0.8/02). Compared to the same night a year ago, 48 HOURS was up +4% in viewers.
Saturday’s broadcast featured best-selling author James Patterson’s investigation into the life and death of convicted murderer and former New England Patriots player Aaron Hernandez. Hernandez seemed to have it all. He turned a hardscrabble childhood into superstar NFL dreams. In 2012 he was on one of the all-time best teams in the NFL and was armed with a new $40 million contract extension. But then it all fell apart when he was arrested for the 2013 murder of semi-pro linebacker Odin Lloyd in North Attleboro, Mass. He was convicted of murdering Lloyd in 2015, and in April 2017, Hernandez committed suicide in a Massachusetts prison where he was serving a life sentence. He was 27.
Patterson and 48 HOURS took viewers on a journey through Hernandez’s life – as a child growing up in Bristol, Conn., where football glory got him into college – and then to the NFL.
But, despite the on-field accolades, as Patterson reported, he could never outrun his history, including the impact the death of his father had on him, and his other personal demons, which remained hidden behind the mask of a celebrity football player. In addition to being charged and convicted of killing Lloyd, Hernandez was also charged and acquitted of killing two others.
Patterson had been reporting on the case for a new book on Hernandez’s story since the former gridiron great hung himself with a bedsheet, called All-American Murder out this week from Little, Brown and Company.

48 HOURS: “Secrets of Waco” was Friday’s #1 broadcast at 8:00 PM with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Dec. 30.
The all-new broadcast delivered 4.79 million viewers and a 0.9/03 with adults 25-54, the demographic that matters most to those who advertise in news.
The broadcast featured Peter Van Sant and 48 HOURS’ report revealing new information behind the historic stand-off between Branch Davidians led by David Koresh and federal law enforcement nearly 25 years ago.
The broadcast included the first-ever interview with a retired United Parcel Service (UPS) driver Larry Gilbreath, who told Van Sant how he unwittingly delivered large boxes of military grade guns and ammunition to David Koresh in the months and weeks before the siege that would capture the attention of the world in 1993.
48 HOURS: “Secrets of Waco” explored the years-long path that led to the growth of Koresh as a cult leader, the stories of sexual and physical abuse of his followers, and how he was able to lead them into battle with the government. Van Sant’s reporting took him across the U.S. and to Australia and featured interviews with law enforcement agents, Koresh disciples, and survivors of the stand-off that ended with more than 70 followers dead, of which nearly two dozen were children.
48 HOURS shed new light on the questions still lingering about the deadly day the Branch Davidian compound burst into flames. The broadcast featured interviews with former Branch Davidians Grace Adams and Joann Vaega, as well as Bill Buford, a former ATF agent who helped plan the raid.
48 HOURS: “Secrets of Waco” is produced by Josh Yager. Taigi Smith is the development producer. Emily Wichick is the field producer. Ken Blum, Phil Tangel and Mike Baluzy are the editors. Anthony Batson is the senior broadcast producer. Nancy Kramer is the executive story editor. Susan Zirinsky is the senior executive producer.
