ABC Builds Its Overall Audience Year to Year for the 9th Straight Week

With “Roseanne” airing a repeat, ABC’s first live broadcast of “American Idol” grew to best-since-premiere numbers on Sunday and emerged as ABC’s No. 1 show and the week’s No. 2 TV series in Adults 18-49, beating CBS’ “Young Sheldon” and trailing only its top-rated “The Big Bang Theory.” During the week of April 23, 2018, ABC claimed a net-leading 8 of the week’s Top 15 series telecasts in Adults 18-49: “American Idol-SUN” – No. 2, “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Roseanne SP 2-4/24” and “Roseanne SP 3-4/24” tied at No. 7,“American Idol-MON” – No. 11, “Roseanne” and “Roseanne SP 1-4/24” tied at No. 12 and “America’s Funniest Home Videos” – No. 15.   
 

  • ABC Prime Time led the week in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4), ranking as the No. 1 broadcaster for the 2nd week in a row and for the 4th time in the last 5 weeks

  • ABC delivered its 9th straight week of year-over-year Total Viewer growth, gaining 10% from the same week last year (4.5 million vs. 4.1 million), while holding exactly even with Adults 18-49 (0.9/4).

ABC’s ‘DWTS: Athletes’ Opens to a Near 6-Month Viewership High in Its Slot,  Tying NBC’s ‘The Voice’ in Women 18-34 and Beating It With Teens 12-17
ABC Monday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 6.9 million and 0.9/4 in AD18-49):
Featuring the debut of “Dancing with the Stars: Athletes” edition into “The Crossing” at 10:00 p.m., ABC ran a strong 2nd on Monday in Total Viewers (6.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (0.9/4) to “The Voice”-led NBC, beating out 3rd place CBS (4.6 million and 0.7/3) with the premiere of “Elementary” by 2.3 million viewers and by 29% in young adults.   
  • From 8:00-10:00 p.m. head-to-head against NBC’s “The Voice,” ABC’s “DWTS: Athletes” took 2nd in its 2-hour slot to finish as Monday’s No. 2 TV show with Total Viewers (8.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.1/5). “DWTS: Athletes” tied NBC’s “The Voice” as Monday’s No. 1 TV show in Women 18-34 (1.0/5) and straight out beat “The Voice” in Teens  12-17 (+20% – 0.6/6 vs 0.5/4). “DWTS: Athletes” drew ABC’s biggest audience to the 2-hour time slot in nearly 6 months– since 11/20/17.

ABC Sunday Prime Time (7:00-11:00 p.m. – 6.4 million and 1.4/6 in AD18-49)
Featuring the first-ever Live “American Idol” broadcast across the country, ABC shot to the top of Sunday night, doubling its nearest competition in Adults 18-49 (+100% – 1.4/6 vs. 0.7/3 – CBS and NBC tied).

  • Driven by “Idol” as the night’s dominant No. 1 TV show, ABC’s Sunday prime-time performance spiked over the year-ago night with an all-original schedule by 83% in Total Viewers (6.4 million vs. 3.5 million) and by 75% in Adults 18-49 (1.4/6 vs. 0.8/3).

“American Idol” FAST NATIONAL RATINGS (8:00-10:01 p.m. – 8.7 million and 1.9 in AD18-49):
ABC’s “American Idol” won its 2-hour slot and grew by double digits for the 2nd week in a row with Total Viewers (+16% – 8.7 million vs. 7.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (+27% – 1.9 rating vs. 1.5/6), hitting best-since-premiere numbers on the night – since 3/11/18.

  • Outdelivering both editions of NBC’s “The Voice” on Monday (1.5/6) and Tuesday (1.6/7), as well as CBS’ “Survivor” on Wednesday (1.6/7), ABC’s “American Idol-SUN” (1.9/7) finished as the week’s No. 1 unscripted series in Adults 18-49.



  • For the first time this season, ABC’s “American Idol” surpassed 1 million engagements with a total of 1.3 million engagements across social media, including an astounding 1 million total engagements across Instagram.

  • For its 8th straight Sunday broadcast, “Idol” improved its 2-hour time period by enormous margins, topping the same night last year with “Once Upon a Time” and “Match Game” by 172% in Total Viewers (8.7 million vs. 3.2 million) and by 111% in Adults 18-49 (0.9 rating vs. 0.9/3). On average season to date, “American Idol” is producing ABC’s best numbers in the 2-hour time period in 4 years with Total Viewers and in 3 years with Adults 18-49 – since the comparable 8 weeks of 2014 and 2015, respectively.



“Deception” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 3.7 million and 0.8/3 in AD18-49):
In the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Deception” won its time period with Adults 18-49 (0.8/3), besting CBS’ “Madam Secretary” by 33% (0.6/2) and NBC’s “Timeless” by 33% (0.6/2). The new ABC drama jumped week to week by 16% in Total Viewers and by 33% in Adults 18-49 to 4-week highs – since 4/1/18.

  • “Deception” continued to boost its time slot year to yearin the hour, improving from the year-ago night with the “American Crime” finale by 89% in Total Viewers (3.7 million vs. 2.0 million) and doubling it among Adults 18-49 (+100% – 0.8/3 vs. 0.4/2).

ABC’s “The View” averaged 3.044 million Total Viewers, 488,000 Women 25-54 and 328,000 Women 18-49, during the week of April 16, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” led CBS’ “The Talk” (2.369 million, 426,000 and 288,000, respectively) during the week in Total Viewers (+675,000), Women 25-54 (+62,000) and Women 18-49 (+40,000), posting its largest overall viewer lead of the season since season premiere week over 7 months ago – since w/o 9/4/17.

“The View” improved on the previous week (2.730 million, 469,000 and 324,000, respectively, for w/o 4/9/18) in Total Viewers (+12%), Women 25-54 (+4%) and Women 18-49 (+1%).  In fact, “The View” drew its largest overall audience in 3 months and posted its best Women 25-54 performance in 2 months – since weeks of 1/15/18 and 2/12/18, respectively.

For the 2nd week in a row, “The View” improved year to year in Total Viewers (+15% – 3.044 million vs. 2.651 million) and Women 18-49 (+2% – 328,000 vs. 320,000).

Season to date, “The View” is posting gains compared to the same point last season in Total Viewers (+1% – 2.927 million vs. 2.891 million), marking its most watched season in 4 years – since the 2013-14 season. 

In addition, “The View” leads CBS’ “The Talk” across the board, increasing its advantages from the same point last season in Total Viewers (340,000 vs. 178,000), Women 25-54 (93,000 vs. 60,000) and Women 18-49 (63,000 vs. 59,000). In fact, “The View” is posting its largest season leads over the CBS program in Total Viewers and Women 25-54 in 5 years – since the 2012-13 season.

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (1.330 million), during the week of April 16, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” outdelivered CBS’ “The Late Late Show” (1.297 million) by 33,000 and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers-SM” (1.185 million) by 145,000.

“Nightline” increased week to week in Total Viewers (+3% – 1.330 million vs. 1.287 million).

“Nightline” turned in gains versus the same week last year (1.316 million and 348,000, respectively, for w/o 4/17/17) in Total Viewers (+1%) and Adults 18-49 (+2%).

Season to date, “Nightline” is beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” across the board: Total Viewers (+11,000 – 1.415 million vs. 1.404 million), Adults 25-54 (+30,000 – 520,000 vs. 490,000) and Adults 18-49 (+29,000 – 393,000 vs. 364,000). 

Stories on “Nightline” last week included more from George Stephanopoulos’ exclusive interview with former FBI Director James Comey; a group discussion across the political spectrum to weigh in on Comey’s interview; an analysis of what happened after Southwest flight 1380 made an emergency landing due to an engine failing; an interview with the two men who were arrested in a Philadelphia Starbucks about what they say happened during their arrest; a look at Stormy Daniels’ appearance on “The View” where she revealed a sketch of the man she says threatened her and her child in 2011; and an interview with Kerry Washington about “Scandal”’s final season and the star’s journey on the political drama.

ABC Improves Its Viewership Year Over Year for the 8th Consecutive Week

With ‘Roseanne” repeating as the week’s No. 1 TV show, ABC continued to dominate the top of the ratings charts. During the week of April 16, 2018, ABC claimed a network-leading 6 of the week’s Top 15 broadcast programs in Adults 18-49: “Roseanne” – No. 1, “Grey’s Anatomy” – No. 6, “American Idol-SUN” – No. 8, “American Idol-MON” – No. 11, while “Alex, Inc. SP-4/17”
and “Scandal” tied at No. 14. ABC’s “Roseanne” also stood as the week’s most watched TV show overall for the 4th time in as many weeks.

  • ABC finished as the No. 1 network in prime time with Adults 18-49 (0.9/4-tie) for the 3rd time in the last 4 weeks



  • ABC marked its 8th straight week of year-over-year Total Viewer gains, advancing 7% from the same week last year (4.4 million vs. 4.1 million) and holding exactly even in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 0.9/3).

ABC’s ‘Scandal’ Closes Out at 2-1/2 Month Highs and Beats Last Year’s Finale

ABC Thursday Prime (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.9 million and 1.3/6 in AD18-49):
ABC’s TGIT lineup once again nearly tied a “Big Bang”-led CBS for No. 1 on Thursday in Adults 18-49 (1.3/6 vs. 1.4/6), while defeating NBC by 86% (0.7/3) and Fox by 117% (0.6/2). Boasting strong delayed viewing for its Thursday dramas, ABC is projected to move ahead and win Thursday night, once Live + 7 Day Adult 18-49 ratings become available

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” ran a strong 2nd in its hour with Adults 18-49 (1.6/7) against CBS’ top-rated comedies (“The Big Bang Theory”/”Young Sheldon”) and won the hour by 10% in Adults 18-34 to stand as Thursday’s No. 1 TV show with the younger end of the key sales demo. “Grey’s” held even with its week-earlier Fast Affiliate rating, which adjusted up 1- tenth in the National ratings.



  • Delivering its best-yet retention out of “Grey’s” at 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “Station 19” grew week to week by 10% in Adults 18-49 to a 3-week high (since 3/29/18) and equaled the series’ 2nd best rating to date.The new ABC drama won its hour with Adults 18-34 and key Women (W18-34/W18-49).

  • Building 18% on its lead-in 10:00 p.m., ABC’s series finale of “Scandal” shot to the top of its hour with Adults 18-49 (1.3/5), beating NBC’s “Chicago Fire” by 30% (1.0/4) and CBS’ “S.W.A.T.” by 44% (0.9/4). It was also the most-watched show overall in the time slot (5.4 million).  “Scandal” grew for the 3rd week in a row with Total Viewers (+29% – 5.4 million vs. 4.2 million) and advanced 44% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/5 vs. 0.9/4), scoring its highest numbers in 2-1/2 months – since 2/1/18.  The ABC drama also topped its year-ago season closer (5.2 million and 1.2/5 on 5/18/17) by 4% in Total Viewers and 8% in Adults 18-49.

ABC’s “The View” averaged 3.340 million Total Viewers, 554,000 Women 25-54 and 351,000 Women 18-49, on Tuesday, April 17, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Fast National Ratings Data from Nielsen Media Research. Featuring Stormy Daniels’ sit-down with her attorney, Michael Avenatti, “The View” saw its most watched telecast in 3 months – since 1/17/18.  
“The View” improved on its previous week’s performance (w/o 4/9/18) across the boardTotal Viewers (+22% – 3.340 million vs. 2.730 million), Women 25-54(+18% – 554,000 vs. 469,000) and Women 18-49 (+8% – 351,000 vs. 324,000). In addition, “The View” saw its most watched Tuesday telecast in 15 months and best Women 25-54 performance in over 3 months – since 1/24/17 and 1/2/18, respectively.
