CBS NEWS WINS SEVEN MURROW AWARDS – MOST FOR A NETWORK

Television and Radio Divisions Each Win “Overall Excellence” Titles
from the Radio, Television & Digital News Association
CBS News won seven Edward R. Murrow awards, the most for a network, the Television, Radio & Digital News Association announced today. Four of the awards were for CBS News Radio and three were for television work, including awards for Overall Excellence in Journalism won by each division.
In addition to the Overall Excellence award won for the second time straight and the 12th over 18 years, CBS News Radio was recognized for Best Audio Newscast for the sixth straight time. This year it was for WORLD NEWS ROUNDUP coverage of Hurricane Harvey with Norah O’Donnell reporting from Houston and Steve Kathan anchoring from New York. Coverage of the mass shooting of concertgoers on the Las Vegas Strip last October earned the staff the Breaking News award for a report by Steve Futterman, Steve Dorsey and Deborah Rodriguez. This year’s Excellence in Writing award went to Dave Ross for his daily feature.
The Television side’s three wins include the Overall Excellence award and two 60 MINUTES reports. “Too Big to Prosecute” won for Investigative Reporting. The joint investigation by 60 MINUTES and The Washington Post was reported by Bill Whitaker and revealed how the biggest opioid case in U.S. history against one of the world’s largest drug distribution companies was settled by the government in a deal that shocked DEA agents. Steve Kroft’s whimsical story “The Isle of Eigg,” about a lightly inhabited island off Scotland’s coast, won for Excellence in Writing.
David Rhodes is the president of CBS News. Craig Swagler is general manager of CBS News Radio. Jeff Fager is the executive producer of 60 MINUTES.
The Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala will be held on Oct. 22, 2018 at Gotham Hall in New York City.
