ABC Tuesday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.9 million and 1.1/5 in AD18-49):
Growing 10% week to week, ABC ranked No. 2 on Tuesday night in Adults 18-49 (1.1/5-tie) to a “The Voice”/”This Is Us”-fueled NBC, moving up from 4th place on the same night last year and spiking 38% in rating(0.8/3 on 10/31/17). ABC’s Halloween-themed Tuesday comedies were each up week to week and “The Rookie” held even at 10:00 p.m.
  • Rising 6% week to week at 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Conners” won its half-hour among Adults 18-49 (1.8/8) and ranked as Tuesday’s No. 2 TV show, behind only NBC’s top-rated “This Is Us.” The season’s No. 1 new comedy continued to improve its time period for ABC year to year, as “The Conners” was up from “The Middle” in the half-hour on the year-ago night by 2.7 million viewers (7.7 million vs. 5.0 million) and by 50% in Adults 18-49 (1.8/8 vs. 1.2/5). 

  • At 8:30 p.m., ABC freshman comedy “The Kids Are Alright” grew week to week in Total Viewers (+8% – 5.5 million vs. 5.1 million) and Adults 18-49 (+18% – 1.3/6 vs. 1.1/4).
  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “black-ish” surged by double digits over the prior week in Total Viewers (+16% – 4.3 million vs. 3.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (+22% – 1.1/5 vs. 0.9/4), posting new season highs on both counts.

  • At 9:30 p.m., ABC sophomore comedy “Splitting Up Together” increased week to week by 14% in Total Viewers (3.3 million vs. 2.9 million) and by 29% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 0.7/3), equaling its season highs.
  • Building on its lead-in by 1.2 million viewers at 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Rookie” held even week to week in Total Viewers (4.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (0.8/4). In addition, “The Rookie” jumped over the year-ago nighttelecast of “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World” in the hour by 1.8 million viewers (4.5 million vs. 2.7 million) and by 33% in Adults 18-49 (0.8/4 vs. 0.6/2). On average in Nielsen’s Most Current season to date ratings, “The Rookie” is improving the hour year to year for ABC by 74% in Total Viewers and by 25% in Adults 18-49.

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.799 million Total Viewers, 441,000 Women 25-54 and 308,000 Women 18-49, during the week of Oct. 22, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” outperformed CBS’ “The Talk” (2.203 million, 328,000 and 229,000, respectively) during the week in Total Viewers (+596,000), Women 25-54 (+113,000) and Women 18-49 (+79,000). “The View” delivered its largest leads in Women 25-54 since February and in Women 18-49 since March – since weeks of 2/12/18 and 3/5/18, respectively, based on original telecasts.
“The View” substantially improved its Total Viewer advantage over “The Talk” year to year (+81% – 596,000 vs. 330,000 for w/o 10/23/17).
“The View” posted week-to-week gains (w/o 10/15/18) in all key target demos: Total Viewers (5% – 2.799 million vs. 2.674 million), Women 25-54 (+4% – 441,000 vs. 423,000) and Women 18-49 (+8% – 308,000 vs. 286,000).
Season to date, “The View” leads CBS’ “The Talk” across the board: Total Viewers (+579,000 – 2.863 million vs. 2.284 million), Women 25-54 (+93,000 – 452,000 vs. 359,000) and Women 18-49 (+55,000 – 316,000 vs. 261,000). In fact, “The View” is increasing its Total Viewer lead over “The Talk” compared to last season (+69% – 579,000 vs. 343,000) to its largest in 6 years – since the 2012-13 season.
NOTE: Due to coverage of the suspicious packages on Wednesday (10/24/18), ABC’s “The View” was retitled to “View.” The telecast is excluded from the weekly averages. ABC’s are based on four days (Monday–Tuesday and Thursday–Friday).

ABC News’ “Nightline” averaged 1.197 million Total Viewers, 425,000 Adults 25-54, and 320,000 Adults 18-49, during the week of Oct. 22, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (371,000 and 276,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+54,000) and Adults 18-49 (+44,000).

“Nightline” narrowed its margins from the same week last year (w/o 10/23/18) with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in all key target demos:  Total Viewers (-31%- 79,000 vs. 115,000), Adults 25-54 (-20% – 59,000 vs. 74,000) and Adults 18-49 (-37% – 56,000 vs. 89,000).

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+65,000 – 471,000 vs. 406,000) and Adults 18-49 (+45,000 – 354,000 vs. 309,000), posting its largest-ever Adults 18-49 margin over the CBS program.   

Stories on “Nightline” last week included the brutal conditions of the migrant caravan as they journeyed through Mexico; the developments of the suspected mail bomb campaign and how police handled the explosives delivered to Clinton, Obama, CNN and more; the nationwide craze around the Mega Millions $1.6 billion jackpot and cautionary tales of past lotto winners; one-on-one interviews with Ted Cruz and Beto O’Rourke; Elle King sharing some of her darkest times and how music saved her; the impact of Megyn Kelly’s comments on blackface; and an up-close look at panning for gold with the stars of “Gold Rush.”

ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Dan Harris, Juju Chang and Byron Pitts. Steven Baker is executive producer. The program airs weeknights, from 12:35-1:05 a.m. EDT, on The ABC Television Network. Together with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Nightline” is part of ABC’s winning late-night strategy of airing news and entertainment programming.

ABC’s ‘Dancing’ and ‘The Good Doctor’ Rise to Season Highs on Monday Night

ABC Monday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 8.1 million and 1.2/5 in AD18-49):
Posting gains for “DWTS” and “The Good Doctor” (returning from the prior week’s preemption), ABC stood as Monday’s most-watched network (8.1 million) and ranked No. 2 in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5-tie), hitting season highs on the night.

“Dancing with the Stars” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 8.2 million and 1.2/5 in AD18-49):
From 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” grew for the 2nd straight week in Total Viewers (+12% – 8.2 million vs. 7.3 million) and Adults 18-49 (+20% – 1.2/5 vs. 1.0/4), currently at new season highs on both counts. In addition, continuing to narrow the gap, “DWTS” scored its nearest finish this season with NBC’s “The Voice” in Adults 18-49 (-0.6 rating points).

“The Good Doctor” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 8.0 million and 1.3/6 in AD18-49):
At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Good Doctor” returned after the prior week’s preemption to win its hour, beating runner-up CBS’ “Bull” by 1.0 million viewers (8.0 million vs. 7.0 million) and by 44% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/6 vs. 0.9/4). “The Good Doctor” rose over its last telecast (6.7 million and 1.1/4 on 10/16/18) in Total Viewers (+19%) and in Adults 18-49 (+18%) to draw its biggest audience this season and tie its high with young adults.

Despite facing The World Series Game 2 on Fox, ABC’s Wednesday numbers improved week to week in Total Viewers (+5% – 4.2 million vs. 4.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (+10% – 1.1/5 vs. 1.0/4).  ABC’s “Modern Family” emerged as Wednesday’s No. 1 TV series in Adults 18-49 (1.5/6). Each of ABC’s Halloween-themed Wednesday comedies rose over the prior week, hitting or tying best-since-premiere ratings.

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Goldbergs” gained viewers week to week (+2% – 5.0 million vs. 4.9 million) and jumped 18% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/6 vs. 1.1/5), equaling a best-since-premiere young adult rating – since 9/26/18. 



  • At 8:30 p.m., ABC’s “American Housewife” improved from the previous week by 5% in Total Viewers (4.4 million vs. 4.2 million) and by 10% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/4 vs. 1.0/4), hitting a 3-week high in viewers and matching a best-since-premiere young adult number – since 10/3/18 and 9/26/18, respectively.

  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “Modern Family” grew week to week by 4% in Total Viewers (5.2 million vs. 5.0 million) and by 15% in Adults 18-49 (1.5/6 vs. 1.3/5), drawing its largest audience in 3 weeks and scoring a best-since-premiere rating in young adults – since 10/3/18 and 9/26/18, respectively.



  • At 9:30 p.m.,  ABC’s “Single Parents” was up from the prior week by 8% in Total Viewers (3.8 million vs. 3.5 million) and by 22% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/4  vs. 0.9/4), earning a 3-week high in viewers and tying its top young adult number since its series debut– since 10/3/18 and 9/26/18, respectively.

  • Wednesday’s top gainer this season in L+3 viewers, ABC’s “A Million Little Things” at 10 o’clock rose 6% week to week in Live + Same Day Total Viewers (3.5 million vs. 3.3 million) and held even with Adults 18-49 (0.8/4). The new ABC drama improved its hour year to year by 14% in Adults 18-49, rising over the year-ago “Designated Survivor” (0.7/3 on 10/25/17). Live + 3 Day Ratings: Soaring by +76% from L+SD to L+3, last week’s “A Million Little Things” was Wednesday’s biggest broadcast gainer in Total Viewers, ranking No. 1 on each of its 4 telecasts to date. In addition, “AMLT” grew its L+3 gains for the 3rd straight week to score its 2nd-largest playback increase yet (+2.54 million).

ABC’s ‘The Rookie’ Builds on its Lead-in and Improves Its Hour Year to Year

ABC Tuesday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.8 million and 1.0/4 in AD18-49):
Boosted by “The Conners” leading off its night, ABC’s Tuesday prime time delivery grew year-to-year against the start of the World Series by 11% in Adults 18-49 (1.0/4 vs. 0.9/3 on 10/24/17). In fact, ABC was the only network to improve year to year on the night, as CBS was down -17% and NBC was down -11%. Fox’s World Series Game 1 coverage was also down year to year in the Metered Markets.

“The Conners” (8:00-8:30 p.m. – 7.9 million and 1.7/7 in AD18-49):
Against the start of the World Series on Fox at 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Conners” dominated its non-sports competition in the half-hour, beating runner-up NBC’s “The Voice” by 21% (1.7/7 vs. 1.4/6). In fact, “The Conners” was Tuesday’s No. 2 TV series with young adults, trailing only NBC’s top-rated “This Is Us.” The ABC freshman comedy drew an average audience of 7.9 million viewers against the opening of the Fall Classic. In L+3, last week’s debut climbed by +2.3 million viewers and +6-tenths in Adults 18-49 over L+SD. 

  • “The Conners” continued to deliver impressive year-over-year time period improvement for ABC, spiking over the year-ago night telecast of “The Middle” in the half-hour (5.8 million and 1.3/5 on 10/24/17) by 2.1 million viewers and by 31% in Adults 18-49. In fact with “The Conners” leading off the night, ABC scored its best delivery in the slot over the last 5 years that the World Series has started on Tuesday night – since 2013.



“The Rookie” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.4 million and 0.8/4 in AD18-49):
Building on its lead-in at 10:00 p.m. (+52%/+14%), ABC’s “The Rookie” showed strong retention of its week-earlier series debut and ranked No. 2 against its drama competition in the hour among Adults 18-49, tying CBS’ “NCIS: New Orleans” (0.8/4). In addition, “The Rookie” built over the year-ago nighttelecast of “Kevin (Probably) Saves the World” in the hour by 1.5 million viewers (4.4 million vs. 2.9 million) and by 14% in Adults 18-49 (0.8/4 vs. 0.7/3).

  • Live + 3 Day Results for the “Rookie” Debut: With a +3.1 million viewer jump from L+SD to L+3, “The Rookie” debuted with ABC’s largest playback increase for a new drama in just over 1 year in Total Viewers – since “The Good Doctor” on 9/25/17. In addition, ABC’s “The Rookie” delivered this season’s 3rd-biggest Total Viewer lift for any new series debut (comedy or drama), behind only NBC’s “Manifest” and “New Amsterdam.” Soaring to 8.6 million viewers and a 1.6/7 after 3 days of delayed viewing, “The Rookie” ranked as ABC’s strongest drama debut in Tuesday’s 10:00 p.m. hour in over 7-1/2 yearswith both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 – since 3/29/11.

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.674 million Total Viewers, 423,000 Women 25-54 and 286,000 Women 18-49, during the week of Oct. 15, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” beat CBS’ “The Talk” (2.235 million, 367,000 and 265,000, respectively) during the week in Total Viewers (+439,000), Women 25-54 (+56,000) and Women 18-49 (+21,000). 

“The View” increased its Total Viewer advantage over “The Talk” versus the same week last year (+33% – 439,000 vs. 331,000 for w/o 10/16/17).

Season to date, “The View” leads CBS’ “The Talk” across the board: Total Viewers (+570,000 – 2.864 million vs. 2.294 million), Women 25-54 (+85,000 – 451,000 vs. 366,000) and Women 18-49 (+47,000 – 315,000 vs. 268,000). In fact, “The View” is increasing its Total Viewer lead over “The Talk” compared to last season (+72% – 570,000 vs. 332,000) to its largest in 6 years – since the 2012-13 season.

In addition, “The View” is improving compared to the same point last season in Total Viewers (+1% – 2.864 million vs. 2.823 million) seeing its most-watched season in 4 years – since the 2014-15 season.

Season to Date, ‘Nightline’ Leads CBS’ ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ in Adults 25-54 and With Its Largest-Ever Margin in Adults 18-49
ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Adults 25-54 (487,000), and Adults 18-49 (362,000), during the week of Oct. 15, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. 
For the 2nd week in a row, “Nightline” grew week to week in Adults 25-54 (+1% – 487,000 vs. 484,000 – for w/o 10/8/18) with its best news demo performance in more than 4 months – since w/o 6/4/18.
Excluding the 2018 NBA Finals-led broadcasts, “Nightline” delivered its best numbers for a single telecast on Monday (10/15/18) in Total Viewers (1.511 million), Adults 25-54 (575,000) and Adult 18-49 (445,000) in 6 months – since 4/19/18.
Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+62,000 – 476,000 vs. 414,000) and Adults 18-49 (+40,000 – 358,000 vs. 318,000), posting its largest ever Adults 18-49 margin over the CBS program.   
Stories on “Nightline” last week included an interview with trans advocate Jazz Jennings nine weeks after her gender confirmation surgery; a look at the fight over commercial whaling in Iceland; college student Joseph Roberts, who said he was falsely accused of sexual harassment; an interview with D’Areion Toles, who recorded a woman trying to block him from entering his own apartment building; a report on the murder of Lauren Phelps; a behind-the-scenes look at “The Conners”; and an interview with Jimmy Kimmel on his career and why he’s taking on politics in the Trump era. 
NOTE:  For the week, repeats of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” were retitled to “Late Night with Seth Meyers-SM.” The telecasts are excluded from the season averages. 
On Monday, Oct. 22, “Nightline” was awarded the Edward R. Murrow Award for Best News Series for Correspondent Bob Woodruff’s The Unwanted, a chilling report on the plight of the Rohingya. ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Dan Harris, Juju Chang and Byron Pitts. Steven Baker is executive producer. The program airs weeknights, from 12:35-1:05 a.m. EDT, on The ABC Television Network. Together with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Nightline” is part of ABC’s winning late-night strategy of airing news and entertainment programming.
