Season to Date, ‘World News Tonight’ Is the Most-Watched Newscast for the 3rd Season in a Row
ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the No. 1 evening newscast in Total Viewers (8.781 million) the week of Dec. 17, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (8.430 million) by 351,000, widening its lead from the previous week by 13% (vs. 310,000 for w/o 12/10/18) to a 10-week high – since w/o 10/8/18. “World News Tonight” has won 12 of the 13 weeks of the season in Total Viewers. 
On Tuesday (12/18/18)“World News Tonight” ranked No. 1 across the board, leading “NBC Nightly News” by 719,000 Total Viewers (8.961 million vs. 8.242 million), by 56,000 Adults 25-54 (1.840 million vs. 1.784 million) and by 150,000 Adults 18-49 (1.294 million vs. 1.144 million).
“World News Tonight” improved year-to-year (w/o 12/18/17) in Adults 18-49 (+49,000/+4% – 1.224 million vs. 1.175 million).
“World News Tonight” slashed its year-to-year margins (w/o 12/18/17) with “NBC Nightly News” in both Adults 25-54 (-80% – 71,000 vs. 349,000) and Adults 18-49 (-99% – 3,000 vs. 372,000).
        
Season to date, “World News Tonight” ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers at this point of the season for the 3rd year in a row. “World News Tonight” (8.657 million) leads “NBC Nightly News” (8.374 million) by 283,000. In addition, “World News Tonight” is cutting its season margins by double digits in both Adults 25-54 (-35% – 85,000 vs. 131,000) and Adults 18-49 (-47% – 82,000 vs. 156,000), posting its closest Adults 18-49 performance in 11 years – since the 2007-08 season.
For the week, “World News Tonight” beat “CBS Evening News” by 2.548 million Total Viewers, by 547,000 Adults 25-54 and by 357,000 Adults 18-49.
NOTE: On Friday (12/21/18), “World News Tonight” was retitled to “Wrld News Tonite,” while the “CBS Evening News” was retitled to “CBS Evening Nws.” ABC’s and CBS’ averages are based on four days (Monday–Thursday).

ABC’s ‘The Great American Baking Show’ Finale Rises by Double Digits

With a second telecast of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” this holiday season leading into the season closer of “The Great American Baking Show: Holiday Edition,” ABC won Thursday night among Adults 18-49 (0.9/4).

  • From 8:00-9:00 p.m., ABC’s replay of “A Charlie Brown Christmas” won its hour and stood as Thursday’s No. 1 TV show by 20% among Adults 18-49 (1.2/6) over CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” encore in the same hour at 8:00 p.m. (1.0/5). Also in its time period, the ABC encore doubled the first hour of NBC’s “Timeless” finale (0.6/3). ABC’s re-airing of the Peanuts’ special retained 100% of the audience for its first broadcast this holiday season two weeks ago in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5 on 12/6/18 in the same hour).



  • From 9:00-11:00 p.m., ABC’s season finale for “The Great American Baking Show: Holiday Edition” grew by double digits week to week in Total Viewers (+20% – 3.6 million vs. 3.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (+17% – 0.7/3 vs. 0.6/3), tying its season high with young adults.

Score New Season Highs on Wednesday in Total Viewers

ABC Wednesday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.3 million and 1.0/4 in AD18-49):
On its final broadcast of 2018, ABC’s regular Wednesday lineup saw each of its series improve in Total Viewers, as “The Goldbergs,” “American Housewife” and “Modern Family” delivered their most-watched telecasts this season. Building 10% week to week in Total Viewers, ABC marked its top Wednesday with its regular lineup in more than 2 months—since 10/3/18. ABC ran neck-and-neck with CBS for No. 1 on the night in Adults 18-49 (1.0/4 vs. 1.1/5).

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Goldbergs” built week to week by 8% in Total Viewers (5.3 million vs. 4.9 million) and held steady in Adults 18-49 (1.1/5 vs. 1.2/5), posting a new season high in viewers with its most-watched telecast in over 8 months—since 4/4/18.



  • At 8:30 p.m., ABC’s “American Housewife” improved from the previous week by 18% in Total Viewers (4.6 million vs. 3.9 million) and by 11% in Adults 18-49 (1.0/4  vs. 0.9/4), also scoring a new season high in viewers with its most-watched telecast in more than 8 months—since 4/4/18.

  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “Modern Family” grew week to week by 16% in Total Viewers (5.7 million vs. 4.9 million) and by 8% in Adults 18-49 (1.4/6 vs. 1.3/5), hitting a new season best in viewers at a near 1-year high overall—since 1/17/18.



  • At 9:30 p.m., ABC’s “Single Parents” was up from the prior week by 9% in Total Viewers (3.6 million vs. 3.3 million) and by 13% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 0.8/3) for its most-watched telecast in 5 weeks—since 11/7/18.

  • In the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s winter finale for “A Million Little Things” built over the previous week by 6% in Total Viewers (3.4 million vs. 3.2 million) and held even with Adults 18-49 (0.7/3). Live + 7 Day Ratings:A Million Little Things” has posted triple-digit L+7 increases on each of the series’ 8 telecasts among Adults 18-49 and on its 11/7/18 telecast scored a best-yet spike of +157% over its L+SD rating.

ABC’s Tuesday Rises 13% With ‘The Conners’ as the No. 1 Show in Adults 18-49

ABC’s ‘black-ish’ and ‘Splitting Up Together’ Hit Multi-Week Highs in Viewers

ABC Tuesday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.3 million and 0.9/4 in AD18-49):
ABC’s “The Conners” ranked as Tuesday’s No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49 (1.4/6), beating CBS’ “NCIS” (1.3/6) and tying NBC’s “The Voice.” Including last week’s Live + 3 Day ratings, it was the 2nd week in a row for “The Conners” to rank No. 1 on the night in Adults 18-49, as last week’s telecast jumped from a 1.3/6 in L+SD to a 1.9/9 after 3 days of playback and moved up to the lead position by 3-tenths over “The Voice.” ABC’s Tuesday lineup grew 13% week to week and tied NBC for No. 2 on the night in Adults 18-49.

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Conners” added Total Viewers week to week (+2% – 6.7 million vs. 6.6 million) and grew 8% with Adults 18-49 (1.4/6 vs. 1.3/6).



  • At 8:30 p.m., ABC freshman comedy “The Kids Are Alright” improved over the prior week in Total Viewers (+2% – 4.4 million vs. 4.3 million) and grew 13% with Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs.0.8/4).

  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “black-ish” gained 3% in Total Viewers week to week (+3% – 3.6 million vs. 3.5 million) and held even with Adults 18-49 (0.8/3), drawing a 4-week high in viewers—since 11/13/18.



  • At 9:30 p.m., ABC sophomore comedy “Splitting Up Together” increased week to week by 7% in Total Viewers (3.0 million vs. 2.8 million) and by 17% in Adults 18-49 (0.7/3 vs. 0.6/3), marking its most-watched telecast in 6 weeks—since 10/30/18.

  • Building on its lead-in by 1.2 million viewers at 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Rookie” held exactly even week to week in Total Viewers (4.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (0.7/4), improving its hour from the year-ago night by 68% in viewers and by 17% in young adults (vs. “Kevin Probably Saves the World” on 12/12/17 = 2.5 million and 0.6/3).

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.802 million Total Viewers, 450,000 Women 25-54 and 313,000 Women 18-49, during the week of Dec. 3, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.  
        
“The View” posted week-to-week gains (w/o 11/26/18) in all key target demos: Total Viewers (1% – 2.808 million vs. 2.769 million), Women 25-54 (+8% – 450,000 vs. 416,000) and Women 18-49 (+5% – 313,000 vs. 297,000).

Season to date, amongst all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs (22 Total), “The View” (2.871 million) ranks No. 4, trailing only “Dr. Phil” (4.179 million), “Ellen” (3.107 million) and “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (2.903 million).

‘Nightline’ Grows Week to Week in Adults 25-54

Season to Date, ‘Nightline’ Is Delivering Its Largest Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 Advantages Over CBS’ ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ in 3 Years

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Adults 25-54 (449,000) and Adults 18-49 (321,000) during the week of Nov. 26, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. 

“Nightline” grew week to week in Adults 25-54 (+2% – 449,000 vs. 441,000 – for w/o 11/19/18).

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+51,000 – 470,000 vs. 419,000) and Adults 18-49 (+33,000 – 348,000 vs. 315,000), posting its largest margins in both measures in 3 years – since the 2015-16 season.

Stories on “Nightline” last week included an exclusive interview with Ivanka Trump; a visit to the U.S.–Mexico border town of Brownsville, Texas, where some local residents are taking it upon themselves to patrol for migrants crossing the border while others give them aid; a first-hand look inside one of Texas’ largest mass casualty drills; the controversial signing of Washington Redskins’ Reuben Foster; new details released after Chris Watts plead guilty for killing his wife and their two daughters; an Instagram model accused of “blackfishing”; and an interview with Michael B. Jordan and his “Creed II” co-stars.

NOTE:  For the week, repeats of NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” were retitled to “Late Night with Seth Meyers-SM,” while repeats of CBS’ “The Late Late Show” were retitled to “The Late Late Show with James Corden-JC-ENC” on Monday and Tuesday. The telecasts are excluded from the season averages. CBS’ averages are based on three days (Wednesday–Friday).  

ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Dan Harris, Juju Chang and Byron Pitts. Steven Baker is executive producer. The program airs weeknights, from 12:35-1:05 a.m. EST, on The ABC Television Network. Together with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Nightline” is part of ABC’s winning late-night strategy of airing news and entertainment programming.

The Great Christmas Light Fight (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 5.4 million and 1.1/5 in AD18-49):  
From 8:00-10:00 p.m. opposite NBC’s “The Voice,” ABC’s “The Great Christmas Light Fight” grew week to week with Total Viewers (5.4 million vs. 4.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.1/5 vs. 0.9/4). 

The Good Doctor (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 7.2 million and 1.4/6 in AD18-49):
On its winter finale, ABC’s “The Good Doctor” led the 10 o’clock hour and stood as Monday’s No. 1 scripted show in Total Viewers (7.2 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.4/6). Rising week to week, “The Good Doctor” attracted its largest audience since its season premiere (on 9/24/18) and hit a season high in Adults 18-49.

Building on its lead-in by 29% at 10:00 p.m. on Sunday night opposite NBC’s down-to-the-wire “Sunday Night Football” contest (Chargers-Steelers), ABC’s “The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show Holiday Special” ranked as the No. 1 entertainment program in the hour, lifting the Net’s time period week to week by 80% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 0.5/2) to a new season highIn fact, the holiday special delivered the Net’s highest non-sports rating to the time slot in 7 ½ months – since 4/15/18.
