Arlington, VA December 20, 2018 – PBS Distribution announces the release of four programs on DVD and digital from NOVA including “ADDICTION,” “VOLATILE EARTH: VOLCANO ON FIRE AND VOLCANO ON THE BRINK,” which will be available January 8, “FLYING SUPERSONIC” available January 15 and “WORLD’S FASTEST ANIMAL available January 29. Information about each of the programs is listed below.

“NOVA: ADDICTION”
In this program viewers will follow three addicts on their highly emotional, extremely personal journey as they deal with their opioid addictions. We meet two brothers from West Virginia and learn how their entire family has been devastated by the opioid crisis. The program introduces viewers to a woman with a genetic vulnerability to addiction and how she copes, and viewers also follow the story of a man who used drugs to deal with the stress of prison. “NOVA: ADDICTION” takes us to the most heartbreaking results of the drug problem…newborns dependent on drugs. In this program NOVA explores how we might best address the problem from advances in neuroscience, to the development of evidence-based treatments, to the rethinking of drug laws and policies. “NOVA: ADDICTION” takes an unflinching look at the science of addiction and explores new discoveries about the brain, giving us clues as to how to treat this deadly epidemic.

“NOVA: ADDICTION” will be available on DVD (SRP $24.99) and digitally January 8, 2019. The program has a run time of 60 minutes.

Original funding for this program was provided by Draper, Fidelity, the David H. Koch Fund for Science, Marjie and Robert Kargman, the George D. Smith Fund and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

“NOVA: VOLATILE EARTH: VOLCANO ON FIRE AND VOLCANO ON THE BRINK”
In this new two-part series viewers take a look at two of the worlds’ most active and mysterious volcanoes in Africa: Nyiragongo and Nyamuragira.

In “VOLCANO ON FIRE,” NOVA explores one of the most active and dangerous volcanoes in the world: Nyiragongo. Located on the East African rift in the Virunga Mountains, it looms over the city of Goma, home to nearly 1 million people. Nyiragongo’s cones conceal a mile-wide crater that encircles a seething lava lake bubbling at nearly 1,000° F. But it has been a difficult volcano to study due to the long-running war in the Democratic Republic of Congo. NOVA joined an international team of volcanologists on a risky climb to Nyiragongo’s summit and down into its crater to deploy sensors and monitor the volcano’s activity. Nyiragongo last erupted in 2002. This hair-raising expedition sheds light on the unpredictable behavior of volcanoes in the hopes the information will ultimately save lives. In part two of the series, “VOLCANO ON THE BRINK,” NOVA and a team of volcanologists explore another volcano in the Virunga Mountains, this one in central Africa: Nyamuragira. NOVA and the international team of experts, during a brief pause in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s war, fly by helicopter to the summit to investigate its secrets. The last time Nyamuragira experienced major activity was five years ago. Volcanologists are eager to discover if magma (molten rock), pressure is now intensifying in the volcano which could cause another eruption. Magma erupts from deep inside the earth where the pressure is immense. If the pressure becomes extreme, it can force the magma upwards, thus creating a volcanic eruption. “VOLCANO ON THE BRINK” probes the mystery of what feeds the volcano and the future dangers it poses from both lava and poisonous gases.

“NOVA: VOLATILE EARTH will be available on DVD (SRP $24.99) and digitally January 8, 2019.  The program has a total run time of 120 minutes.

Original funding for this program was provided by Draper, Fidelity, the David H. Koch Fund for Science and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

“NOVA: FLYING SUPERSONIC”
NOVA: FLYING SUPERSONIC puts viewers right in the middle of the historic international race to develop the world’s first supersonic airliner, the Concorde, fifteen years after the final flight. Viewers go beyond the glamour of jet setting at Mach 2 (twice the speed of sound), and learn about the stunning scientific innovations and political intrigue that helped create this instant legend. Viewers hear stories from those inside the choreographed effort to design and build Concorde in two countries at once, as well as the crew members that flew her. The program then looks to the future and how a new generation of innovators, NASA scientists and others are trying to launch a new era of supersonic passenger planes and travel.

“NOVA: FLYING SUPERSONIC” will be available on DVD (SRP $24.99) and digitally January 15, 2019. The program has a run time of 60 minutes.

Original funding for this program was provided by Draper, Fidelity, the David H. Koch Fund for Science and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

NOVA: WORLD’S FASTEST ANIMAL”
The peregrine falcon is the fastest animal in the world. It reaches blistering diving speeds of 200 miles per hour –three times the speed of a sprinting cheetah. Though the species nearly went extinct in the 1970s due to the insecticide DDT, the species is now one the most widespread predators on Earth, living on every continent except Antarctica.

NOVA joins expert falconer Lloyd Buck who shows us why these birds are considered one of the deadliest animals in the world and what enables them to thrive in such varied environments. Viewers learn how the peregrine’s phenomenal eye-sight, in addition to its speed, gives the birds a huge advantage in hunting prey a mile away.

“NOVA: WORLD’S FASTEST ANIMAL” will be available on DVD (SRP $24.99) and digitally January 29, 2019. The program has a run time of 60 minutes.

Original funding for this program was provided by Draper, Fidelity, the David H. Koch Fund for Scienceand the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
