Arlington, Va. – January 10, 2019  – PBS Distribution announces the release of LETTERS FROM BAGHDAD” on DVD and digital February 5, 2019. In the 19th century an Englishwoman, Gertrude Bell, became a trail blazer by traveling to the Middle East and becoming the most powerful woman in the British Empire. Bell was an explorer, spy, archaeologist, and diplomat. She was often referred to as the female “Lawrence of Arabia,” whom she personally knew, T.E. Lawrence. She rubbed elbows with other powerful men, including Winston Churchill.

The program follows Bell’s life from her time at Oxford University in 1886 to her death in Baghdad in 1926. Her role in the Middle East was ground-breaking for women and one of her many achievements included drawing up the borders for a new country, Iraq. This fascinating historical documentary uses never before seen archival footage, actual photographs taken by Bell herself, and a script taken from Bell’s personal letters. Her story has been somewhat “lost” in history, until now.

LETTERS FROM BAGHDAD” will be available on DVD (SRP $24.99) and digital February 5, 2019. The program has a run time of 90 minutes.

Other titles available from PBS Distribution include: “DOLORES: REBEL, ACTIVIST,” “FEMINIST, MOTHER, AMERICAN MASTERS: MAYA ANGELOU AND STILL I RISE,” and “RACHEL CARSON: SHE SET OUT TO SAVE A SPECIES…US.”
