Macy and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for performances in television. The Screen Actors Guild Awards originated awards for the outstanding performances by a motion picture cast and by television drama and comedy ensembles. The Actor(R) for a motion picture cast performance went this year to "Hidden Figures," while the Actors(R) for television drama and comedy ensemble performances went this year to "Stranger Things" and "Orange is the New Black."

Nominees chosen by their respective SAG Awards film and television nominating committees were announced on Dec. 14, 2016. Information on voting procedures to choose the recipients was sent to the 121,546 active voting members of SAG-AFTRA on Dec. 16. Balloting closed at noon on Friday, Jan. 27. Integrity Voting Systems, the Awards' official election teller, sealed the results until they were announced live during the 23rd Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Honorees for Outstanding Action Performances by Film and Television Stunt Ensembles were revealed by SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris and SAG Awards Committee Chair JoBeth Williams during the People, EW & TNT's SAG Awards(R) Red Carpet Live pre-show which streamed the announcement as it happened on sagawards.tntdrama.com, sagawards.org, the People/Entertainment Weekly Network (People.com/PEN), EW.com, InStyle.com, Essence.com and Time.com.

Dolly Parton presented Lily Tomlin with the 53rd Life Achievement Award, following a filmed salute to the actor, comedian, writer, producer and all-round entertainment maverick. Carteris introduced a filmed "In Memoriam" tribute to the SAG-AFTRA members lost during 2016, an honor roll that sadly included three past presidents of our union: Ken Howard, Patty Duke and William Schallert; as well as two beloved Life Achievement Awards recipients: Mary Tyler Moore and Debbie Reynolds.

In keeping with the SAG Awards tradition of highlighting the work of SAG-AFTRA members, guests enjoyed a touching film montage of honorees overcome by joy, gratitude and even astonishment at having their work as actors recognized and celebrated by their peers.
Time Inc.'s People and the Entertainment Industry Foundation (EIF) hosted the Screen Actors Guild Post-Awards Gala for the 21st year. This exclusive event, which was held immediately following the SAG Awards on a specially extended section of the Shrine Theater, honors the philanthropic causes and good works of the members of SAG-AFTRA. The Gala benefits the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.
