In tonight’s episode of “Truth & Iliza,” Iliza asks, “Is society devolving?” With so much new technology there are better and faster ways to communicate, but are we actually saying less? Iliza introduces new emojis and hosts a seminar on how to be a better person. Tonight’s guest is Shallon Lester (senior editor, Star magazine) and the “Theme King” is actor Timothy Simons (“Veep”). “Truth & Iliza” airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. EDT on Freeform, the Freeform App and Freeform.com.

PICKUP LINES HAVE DEVOLVED TO EMOJIS
“But I think we’re devolving because we’re saying more while actually saying less. Twitter has us down to 140 characters. We post pictures on Instagram with tiny captions. And even that’s too much reading, so some of us just send Snapchats; and yet, no one feels heard or understood. We are having a communication breakdown and in no place is this more evident than in the way men hit on women. Here we have the evolution of man. We’ve all seen this. The condensed version is that man starts off as basically an ape on the savannas and eventually learns to ties his shoes and buy a cabana. But here we have the evolution of the pickup line. At the beginning of society, there was a requirement for men to make a substantial effort if they wanted a wife. Originally this was done by offering the woman’s family, say, a goat. Then – like a thousand years later – men started courting women in more romantic ways and began writing love letters. Then several hundred years later it was in person at bars, which required men to have some semblance of a personality, verbal ability, hygiene and, of course, money. Fast forward to recently when we got texts. But even that communication proved to be too taxing. So we devolved from the written word to pictures. Dick pictures. But even that was too many syllables, so we just call them dick pics.”
