NOVEMBER 16, 2017 — For the first time, The Root’s annual celebration of the best, brightest and most brilliant forms of black excellence is coming to television. FUSION will air a primetime special “The Root 100” hosted by CNN analyst Angela Rye and “Extra” correspondent A.J. Calloway along with FUSION’s Kimberly Brooks this Sunday, November 19 at 9PM. Filmed in New York City, “The Root 100” 2017 will be filled with the likes of honorees such as comedian and actress Franchesca Ramsey, New York Times journalist Yamiche Alcindor, Co-President of the Women's March Tamika D. Mallory, and the “people’s lawyer” S. Lee Merritt along with appearances from Common, “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin and model-actress-editor Veronica Webb. In addition, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA) delivers a special message as she accepts the first-ever Gladiator Award for Public Service.

The 2017 installment of The Root 100 recognized the black innovators, leaders and change agents of the past year with Jordan Peele and Solange Knowles topping the list along with other notable names including Colin Kaepernick, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Issa Rae, Ava DuVernay, and historic Emmy Award-Winners Lena Waithe and Donald Glover. Check out the full list here.

“The Root 100” is presented by the 2018 Toyota Camry. “Toyota is honored to have a continuous integrated partnership with The Root. The Root has been a pivotal platform and voice for African Americans and this year’s list provides a spotlight for the amazing and diverse accomplishments taking place,” the company said.

The Root’s Editor-in-Chief Danielle Belton: "At a time when things may feel at their darkest, these are the individuals providing the light, illuminating our culture, bringing issues out of the shadows and forcing a society, often reticent to deal with racial issues, to fully face the realities of black life in America. Whether one wants to see them or not, their light shines upon all as a beacon commanding our attention and calling our eyes to black brilliance in the face of insurmountable odds. These 100 honorees–from entertainment, the arts, sports, media, politics, business, science and technology–not only represent the best of what America has to offer, they are America, in all its exceptionalism. They are what makes our country great and we should be so bold to listen to what they have to say about love, life, work and art in this country of ours."
