Live + 7 Day Ratings for Wednesday, 9/26/18
The series debut of ABC's A Million Little Things gained an additional +4.27 million viewers after 7 days of TV playback, moving ahead of NBC's Chicago P.D. premiere (+4.06 million) to stand as Wednesday's biggest overall gainer in Total Viewers. The freshman ABC drama posted an +84% increase from L+SD to L+7, marking the 2nd-biggest broadcast lift of Premiere Week, behind only the +93% jump for ABC's The Good Doctor opener. A Million Little Things grew its Total Viewer tally to 9.35 million viewers after 7 days of playback from 5.08 million in L+SD.

A Million Little Things shot up +100% over its L+SD Adult 18-49 rating to stand as the night's #1 broadcast gainer in delayed viewing. Growing to a 2.2 L+7 rating (from a 1.1 in L+SD), ABC's new drama tied Chicago P.D. in the 10pm hour in Adults 18-49 after trailing 1-tenth behind in L+SD.
Please Note: Beyond the L+7 linear ratings, A Million Little Things added +0.94 rating points from online viewing, bringing its 7-day Multiplatform average to a 3.16 Adult 18-49 rating. The debut telecast topped 10 million viewers with the addition of +1.7 million viewers from online viewing, bringing its total to 11.05 million Total Viewers in MP+7.

ABC's Live + 3 Day data for Premiere Week 2018-19 (9/24-9/30/18):

During Premiere Week of the 2018-19 season, ABC claimed the Top 2 broadcast gainers in delayed viewing among Adults 18-49, with the 5th season opener of How to Get Away with Murder (+100%) and the 2nd season premiere of The Good Doctor (+92%). With a +100% jump over its L+SD Adult 18-49 rating, How to Get Away with Murder was the week's only broadcast program to post triple-digit growth after 3 days of TV playback. In addition, ABC's How to Get Away with Murder (+70%) and The Good Doctor (+69%) stood as the week's Top 2 broadcast gainers in Total Viewers, respectively.
With a +5.12 million viewer increase after just 3 days of playback, The Good Doctor was the week's 2nd-largest overall gainer in Total Viewers, behind NBC's Manifest debut. This year's gains in delayed viewing (+92% and +69%, respectively) outdelivered last year's debut (+68% and +49%, respectively) to stand as the show's 2nd-biggest-ever L+3 lift among Adults 18-49 and biggest-ever in Total Viewers.

The debut of ABC's A Million Little Things was Wednesday's #1 playback gainer on the broadcast networks in both Total Viewers (+55%) and Adults 18-49 (+64%). The new ABC drama also tied the Modern Family premiere as the night's #1 absolute gainer on broadcast in Adults 18-49 with a +0.7 ratings point lift from L+SD to L+3, topping the increases of Fox's Empire opener (+0.6 rating points) and all three NBC drama premieres (+0.5 rating points to +0.6 rating points). A Million Little Things opened as Wednesday's 2nd-biggest overall gainer in Total Viewers with a +2.79 million lift, behind NBC's Chicago P.D. premiere.

· After trailing by 1-tenth of a rating point in L+SD, A Million Little Things moved into a tie with Chicago P.D. in the 10pm hour among Adults 18-49 in L+3 (1.8/8).

The 2-hour 15th season opener of ABC's Grey's Anatomy was Thursday's #1 absolute gainer in Adults 18-49 with a +1.1 rating point jump from L+SD to L+3 (tied with CBS' The Big Bang Theory).

· After holding even with its season 14 finale among Adults 18-49 in L+SD, Grey's ended up growing by 3% (3.0/13 vs. 2.9/14) to equal its highest L+3 rating since early March - since 3/1/18.

HTGAWM scored series-high L+3 lifts with increases of +100% in Adults 18-49 (tie) and +70% in Total Viewers over its L+SD numbers.

Week-to-Week, ‘The View’ Increases Its Leads Over ‘The Talk’ in Total Viewers and Women 18-49 Posting Its Largest Total Viewer Margin Over the CBS Program Since April 

Week-to-Week and Year-to-Year, ‘The View’ Sees Gains in Total Viewers

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.841 million Total Viewers, 430,000 Women 25-54 and 315,000 Women 18-49, during the week of Sept. 24, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” beat CBS’ “The Talk” (2.233 million, 372,000 and 257,000, respectively) during the week in Total Viewers (+608,000), Women 25-54 (+58,000) and Women 18-49(+58,000). “The View” more than doubled its Total Viewer lead over the CBS program on the same week last year (+119%; vs. 278,000 for w/o 9/25/17).

“The View” increased its leads over “The Talk” week to week in Total Viewers (+62% – 608,000 vs. 376,000) and Women 18-49 (+61% – 58,000 vs. 36,000). In fact, “The View” posted its largest Total Viewer lead over the CBS program since April – since w/o 4/16/18, based on original telecasts

“The View” improved on the previous week in Total Viewers (+1% – 2.841 million vs. 2.812 million for w/o 9/17/18). 

For the 3rd straight week, “The View” posted year-to-year gains in Total Viewers (+5% – 2. 841 million vs. 2.695 million for w/o 9/25/17).

NOTE: Due to the Judicial Senate Hearing on Thursday (9/27/18), ABC’s “The View” and CBS’ “The Talk” did not air.  ABC’s and CBS’ averages are based on four days (Monday–Wednesday and Friday).

‘Nightline’ Slashes Its Margins Over the Previous Week With NBC’s ‘Late Night with Seth Myers’ in All Key Target Demos

ABC News’ “Nightline” averaged 1.273 million Total Viewers, 447,000 Adults 25-54, and 336,000 Adults 18-49, during the week of Sept. 24, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (1.264 million, 387,000 and 298,000, respectively) in all key target demos: Total Viewers (+9,000), Adults 25-54 (+60,000) and Adults 18-49 (+38,000).

“Nightline” posted week-to-week increases (1.188 million, 389,000 and 280,000, respectively, for w/o 9/17/18) across the board, Total Viewers (+7%), Adults 25-54 (+15%) and Adults 18-49 (+20%), turning in its strongest numbers in more than 3 months – since w/o 6/4/18.

“Nightline” narrowed its margins from the previous week (w/o 9/17/18) with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in all key target demos:  Total Viewers (-52%- 66,000 vs. 138,000), Adults 25-54 (-45% – 73,000 vs. 132,000) and Adults 18-49 (-61% – 49,000 vs. 125,000).

Stories on “Nightline” last week included a breakdown of what happened at the testimonies of Brett Kavanaugh and Christine Blasey Ford, the sworn declaration of Julie Swetnick who claimed she observed Kavanaugh engaging in “highly inappropriate conduct,” an interview with author Deborah Copaken who said she forgave her rapist after Kavanaugh allegations moved her to reach out, protestors at the Girls for Gender Equity walkout, an interview with Dr. Colleen McNicholas about her work in a new documentary that looks at the 1973 Roe v. Wade case and a report on the sentencing of Bill Cosby.

ABC News’ “Nightline” is anchored by Dan Harris, Juju Chang and Byron Pitts. Steven Baker is executive producer. The program airs weeknights, from 12:35-1:05 a.m. EDT, on The ABC Television Network. Together with “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Nightline” is part of ABC’s winning late-night strategy of airing news and entertainment programming.

After just 3 days of TV playback, ABC prime time delivery spiked by a full rating point among Adults 18-49 (growing from a 1.5/7 in L+SD to a 2.5/11 in L+3), increasing its lead over CBS (with the premiere of Murphy Brown) to 32% in L+3 (2.5/11 vs. 1.9/8) versus a 15% margin in L+SD and maintaining its dominant advantage over NBC (+39% - 2.5/11 vs. 1.8/8).

With a +100% jump over its L+SD Adult 18-49 rating, the 5th season opener of ABC's How to Get Away with Murder is the #1 broadcast gainer in delayed viewing during Premiere Week to date and the only broadcast program to post triple-digit growth after 3 days of TV playback. HTGAWM is also the week's biggest overall gainer in Total Viewers with a +70% increase from L+SD to L+3. In fact, with HTGAWM and The Good Doctor, ABC has the week's Top 2 broadcast gainers in both Total Viewers (+70% and +69%, respectively) and Adults 18-49 (+100% and +92%, respectively). In addition, ABC claims the #1 broadcast gainer on 3 of 4 nights of Premiere Week to date in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 with The Good Doctor on Monday, A Million Little Things on Wednesday and HTGAWM on Thursday.

· HTGAWM scored series-high L+3 lifts with increases of +100% in Adults 18-49 and +70% in Total Viewers over its L+SD numbers.

After just 3 days of TV playback, the second season premiere of ABC's The Good Doctor jumped +95% over its L+SD Adult 18-49 rating to rank as Monday's #1 gainer in TV playback, topping the L+3 lifts of NBC's Manifest debut (+68%) and CBS' The Big Bang Theory premiere (+50%) and Magnum P.I. debut (+44%). In addition, ABC's sophomore drama picked up another +5.08 million viewers after 3 days of playback and stood as the night's #1 overall gainer in Total Viewers with a +69% increase from L+SD to L+3. In fact, this year's gains in delayed viewing outdelivered last year's debut (+70% and +49%) to stand as the show's 2nd-largest-ever L+3 lift among Adults 18-49 and biggest-ever in Total Viewers.

Growing to 12.43 million Total Viewers and a 2.52 rating with Adults 18-49 in L+3 (from 7.35 million and a 1.29 rating in L+SD), The Good Doctor emerged as Monday's #2 drama, leapfrogging over Magnum P.I. (10.98 million and 1.67 rating) and Fox's 9-1-1 (9.78 million and 2.47 rating). Additionally, the ABC drama moved up from #6 in L+SD to finish as the night's #3 TV series among Adults 18-49 in the L+3 numbers (2.52 rating), behind only Big Bang and Manifest and ahead of CBS' Young Sheldon (2.49 rating) and NBC's The Voice (2.47 rating).

ABC Thursday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.5 million and 1.5/6 in AD18-49):
Opposite Fox’s NFL game (Rams-Vikings), ABC stood as the non-sports leader on premiere Thursday in Adults 18-49 with its 2-hour 15th season opener of “Grey’s Anatomy” (1.8/8) and the 5th season opener of “How to Get Away with Murder” (0.8/4). During prime time among Adults 18-49, ABC (1.5/6) beat CBS’ season premiere Thursday, including the high-profile return of “Murphy Brown,” by 15% (1.3/5) and NBC’s night of premieres by 50% (1.0/4). ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” finished as Thursday’s No. 2 TV series in Adults 18-49, coming within 3-tenths of CBS’ “The Big Bang Theory” (1.8/8 vs. 2.1/10), and outdelivered the CBS comedy by 40% to rank as the night’s No. 1 series in Adults 18-34 (1.4/9 vs. 1.0/7). 

  • With its Thursday dramas consistently posting big increases in delayed viewing, ABC will narrow the Adult 18-49 gap on the night with Fox’s NFL coverage and widen its advantages over CBS and NBC in Live + 3 Day and Live + 7 Day ratings. ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” was among last season’s biggest gainers in the Live + 7 Day ratings, more than doubling (+122%) its Live + Same Day Adult 18-49 rating and growing by +2.7 million Total Viewers in the finalized L+7 playback numbers. In addition, last season’s “Grey’s” added +1.5 Adult 18-49 rating points to its L+SD number in playback to average a 3.4 rating for the season in Live +7.

ABC’s ‘A Million Little Things’ Opens to a 1-Year High in Its 10 p.m. Timeslot

ABC Wednesday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.0 million and 1.3/6 in AD18-49):
On the opening Wednesday of the season, each of ABC’s returning series came back well ahead of their May finales on the night, while the series debuts of “Single Parents” and “A Million Little Things” opened with strong time period improvement in the 9:30 p.m. half-hour and 10:00 p.m. hour, respectively. 

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Goldbergs” built on its May finale by 14% in Adults 18-49 (1.4/7 vs. 1.2/6), delivering its highest rating since April and topping its final 4 original telecasts last season – since 4/4/18.



  • ABC’s “American Housewife” shifted back an hour to 8:30 p.m. (from 9:30 p.m. last season, airing out of “Modern Family”) and topped its May finale by 7% in Total Viewers (4.4 million vs. 4.1 million) and by 9% in Adults 18-49 (1.2/5 vs. 1.1/4), besting its final 4 original episodes last season and delivering ABC’s best series numbers to the half-hour since March – since 3/28/18  and 3/21/18, respectively.

  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “Modern Family” surged over its May finale by 8% in Total Viewers (5.4 million vs. 5.0 million) and by 23% in Adults 18-49 (1.6/7 vs. 1.3/5), topping its final 6 original episodes last season with young adults – since 3/21/18.



  • Posting strong lead-in retention out of “Modern Family” at 9:30 p.m. (91%/81%), ABC’s series debut of “Single Parents” improved on last season’s L+SD averages for “American Housewife” in the half-hour by 20% in Total Viewers (4.9 million vs. 4.1 million) and by 18% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/5 vs. 1.1/4). In addition, the new comedy drew ABC’s biggest series audience to the half-hour since January and equaled its top young-adult number in nearly 1 year– since 1/17/18 and 10/18/17, respectively.

  • In the 10 o’clock hour against CBS’ “Big Brother” finale, ABC’s “A Million Little Things” debuted well above the L+SD 2017-18 season averages for “Designated Survivor,” boosting the slot by 31% in Total Viewers (5.1 million vs. 3.9 million) and by 57% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/5 vs. 0.7/3). The rookie drama generated ABC’s best series performance in the time period in 1 year– since 9/27/17.

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.812 million Total Viewers, 459,000 Women 25-54 and 322,000 Women 18-49, during the week of Sept. 17, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” beat CBS’ “The Talk” (2.436 million, 400,000 and 286,000, respectively) during the week in Total Viewers (+376,000), Women 25-54 (+59,000) and Women 18-49(+36,000).  “The View” widened its Total Viewer lead over the CBS program year-to-year by 59% (vs. 236,000 for w/o 9/18/17).

On Monday (9/17/18), with guest Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, “The View” saw its best numbers in both Women 25-54 (516,000) and Women 18-49 (403,000) in 5 months – since 4/17/18 and 4/16/18, respectively.

For the 2nd week in a row, “The View” improved on the year-ago week in Total Viewers (+5% – 2.812 million vs. 2.684 million for w/o 9/18/17).

2017-18 Season: 
For the 2017-18 season, “Nightline” drew 1.343 million Total Viewers, 486,000 Adults 25-54 and 367,000 Adults 18-49. “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+32,000 – 486,000 vs. 454,000) and Adults 18-49 (+30,000 – 367,000 vs. 337,000) during the season. 

“Nightline” narrowed its Adults 18-49 margin with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” from the previous season (-13% – 100,000 vs. 115,000) to its closest ever over the NBC program – since the 2014-15 season.

3Q 2018:
ABC News’ “Nightline” averaged 1.208 million Total Viewers, 418,000 Adults 25-54 and 310,000 Adults 18-49 during the 3rd Quarter 2018, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” defeated CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (372,000 and 279,000, respectively) during the 3rd quarter in Adults 25-54 (+46,000) and Adults 18-49 (+31,000) for the 4th year in a row.  

In addition, “Nightline” has beaten the CBS program in both key adult measures for the 3rd consecutive quarter and in 13 of the 14 quarters that the two programs have aired in the timeslot – since 2Q15.

“Nightline” decreased its Adults 18-49 gap with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” from the year-ago quarter by 14% (91,000 vs. 106,000 for 3Q17) to its closest 3rd quarter ever versus the NBC program – since 3Q14. 

Week of September 17, 2018:
ABC News’ “Nightline” averaged 1.188 million Total Viewers, 389,000 Adults 25-54, and 280,000 Adults 18-49, during the week of Sept. 17, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (343,000 and 243,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+46,000) and Adults 18-49 (+37,000).

For the 3rd straight week, “Nightline” posted week-to-week gains (w/o 9/10/18) in Total Viewers (+1% – 1.188 million vs. 1. 175 million), attracting its largest overall audience in 6 weeks – since w/o 8/6/18.

Stories on “Nightline” last week included the accusations of sexual misconduct against SCOTUS nominee Brett Kavanaugh; a look at Bolivia’s hope that its salt flats will revolutionize its economy; a visit with “weed nuns” who put their faith in the healing powers and profits of cannabis; the release of kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart’s captor from prison; the accusations against Bravo TV star Dr. Grant Robicheaux and his girlfriend, Cerissa Riley, who have been charged with drugging and raping two women; and an interview with Sally Field who shared for the first time the truth about what she says was a childhood of dark uncertainties.

NOTE:  On Monday (9/17/18), CBS’ “The Late Late Show” was a repeat and the telecast was retitled to “The Late Late Show with James Corden-JC.” The telecasts are excluded from the weekly averages.  CBS’ averages are based on four days (Tuesday–Friday).

From 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s season 27 premiere of “Dancing with the Stars” drew 8.1 million viewers and a 1.1/4 in Adults 18-49, marking the ABC unscripted series’ closest finish ever among young adults to the season opener of NBC’s “The Voice.” Versus the year-ago night (9/25/17), “DWTS” trimmed its margin with “The Voice” premiere by 400,000 Total Viewers (-1.5 million vs. -1.9 million) and by 3-tenths of a rating point among Adults 18-49 (-0.9 rating points vs. -1.2 rating points). Last year’s 1.2 rating point gap was previously its narrowest margin with “The Voice” opener, prior to last night’s 0.9 rating point difference.

“The Good Doctor” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 7.8 million and 1.4/6 in AD18-49):
Building on its “Dancing” lead-in among young adults at 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Good Doctor” earned 2nd place in the hour to NBC’s debut of “Manifest,” beating CBS’ season premiere of “Bull” by 7% in Total Viewers (7.8 million vs. 7.3 million) and by 56% in Adults 18-49 (1.4/6 vs. 0.9/4). 2017-18 Top Drama in Delayed ViewingSetting records in its debut 2017-18 season, “The Good Doctor” delivered the biggest playback lifts for any drama on TV, growing its Live + Same Day tally by +5.2 million viewers in Live + 3 Day and by +6.9 million viewers in Live + 7 Day. Among Adults 18-49, the ABC drama posted a +1.8 rating point gain (+100%) from L+SD to L+7.

Year-to-Year, ‘The View’ Sees Gains in Total Viewers 

On Monday (9/10/18), with guest Omarosa Manigault Newman, “The View” saw its most-watched telecast (3.189 million) in 5 months – since 4/18/18.  On Wednesday (9/12/18), with guests Stormy Daniels and her attorney, Michael Avenatti, “The View” delivered its best numbers in both Women 25-54 (511,000) and Women 18-49 (398,000) in 5 months – since 4/17/18 and 4/16/18, respectively.

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.911 million Total Viewers, 477,000 Women 25-54 and 388,000 Women 18-49, during the week of Sept. 10, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “The View” led CBS’ “The Talk” (2.398 million, 395,000 and 279,000, respectively) during the week in Total Viewers (+513,000), Women 25-54 (+82,000) and Women 18-49(+59,000).

“The View” nearly doubled its lead over “The Talk” compared to its lead on the same week last year (+78% – 513,000 vs. 289,000 for w/o 9/11/17).

“The View” improved on the previous week (2.802 million, 450,000 and 316,000, respectively, for w/o 9/3/18) in Total Viewers (+4%), Women 25-54 (+6%) and Women 18-49 (+7%), posting its strongest numbers in Total Viewers and Women 25-54 in 5 months and strongest performance in Women 18-49 in 6 months – since weeks of 4/16/18 and 3/5/18, respectively.

“The View” grew year-to-year in Total Viewers (+5% – 2.911 million vs. 2.785 million for w/o 9/11/17).

ABC News’ “Nightline” averaged 1.175 million Total Viewers, 421,000 Adults 25-54, 328,000 Adults 18-49, during the week of Sept. 10, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” outdelivered CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (381,000 and 287,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+40,000) and Adults 18-49 (+41,000).

For the 2nd week in a row, “Nightline” improved on the previous week (w/o 9/3/18) in Total Viewers (+2% – 1.175 million vs. 1.155 million), attracting its largest overall audience in 5 weeks – since weeks of 8/6/18.

“Nightline” slashed its week-to-week margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” by three-quarters in Total Viewers (-75% – 50,000 vs. 200,000), Adults 25-54 (-77% – 38,000 vs. 168,000) and Adults 18-49 (-78% – 27,000 vs. 121,000). 

“Nightline” decreased its year-to-year gaps with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” by double digits in Adults 25-54 (-24% – 38,000 vs. 50,000) and Adults 18-49 (-62% – 27,000 vs. 71,000). 

Season to date, “Nightline” is beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+30,000 – 487,000 vs. 457,000) and Adults 18-49 (+30,000 – 369,000 vs. 339,000). 

Stories on "Nightline" last week included live coverage of Hurricane Florence while the entire region was in a state of emergency, a report on the departure of CBS chairman and CEO Les Moonves after being accused of sexual misconduct, Bob Woodward’s new book “Fear,” the couple accused of keeping GoFundMe donations that were intended for a homeless man, interviews with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper about working together in ‘A Star Is Born,’ and Brigitte Nielson who opened up about having a baby at 54.

ABC Thursday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.2 million and 0.7/3 in AD18-49):
Growing for the 2nd straight week (+17%), ABC earned 2nd place on Thursday in Adults 18-49 (0.7/3) to CBS and posted a 13-week high on the night – best since 6/14/18. ABC also took 2nd on the night with Total Viewers (4.2 million) to deliver its most-watched Thursday since the beginning of June – since 6/7/18.

  • Airing out of a repeat “Celebrity Family Feud” at 9:00 p.m., ABC’s season finale of “Match Game” grew by double digits to deliver new season highs in both Total Viewers (+30% – 4.3 million vs. 3.3 million) and Adults 18-49 (+33% – 0.8/3 vs. 0.6/2). In fact, the ABC game show marked its most-watched telecast overall since January 2017 and its top young adult number since January 2018– since 1/4/17 and 1/24/18, respectively.



  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s season finale of “Take Two” spiked 26% week to week in Total Viewers (2.9 million vs. 2.3 million) and gained 25% in Adults 18-49 (0.5/2 vs. 0.4/2), drawing its largest audience in 2 months (since 7/19/18) and tying a series high with young adults.

With the season finale of “Bachelor in Paradise” and “Castaways,” ABC took 2nd place on Tuesday in Adults 18-49 (1.0/4) to an “America’s Got Talent”-fueled NBC. ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” stood as Tuesday’s No. 2 TV show with Adults 18-49 and beat out NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” to rank as the Tuesday’s No. 1 TV show with Women 18-34.

  • Head-to-head against “AGT” from 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” closer spiked by double digits week to week in Total Viewers (+15% – 4.5 million vs. 3.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (+20% – 1.2/5 vs. 1.0/4), scoring Tuesday season highson both measures. 

 

  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Castaways” added viewers (+5% – 2.2 million vs. 2.1 million) and grew 25% week to week in Adults 18-49 (0.5/2 vs. 0.4/2), matching its best rating since its debut among young adults – since 8/7/18. “Castaways” continued to greatly improve its timeslot for ABCover the same night last summer with original programming (“Somewhere Between” on 9/12/17 = 1.6 million and 0.3/1), boosting it by 38% in Total Viewers and by 67% in Adults 18-49.

On its season premiere on Tuesday (9/4/18), “The View” was up compared to its year-ago premiere (9/5/17) in Total Viewers (+4,000 – 2.859 million vs. 2.855 million) seeing its most-watched season premiere in 4 years – since 9/15/14.

“Nightline” posted week-to-week increases (1.067 million, 400,000 and 319,000, respectively, for w/o 8/27/18) across the board: Total Viewers (+8%), Adults 25-54 (+6%) and Adults 18-49 (+3%), hitting 8-week highs in both key adult demos – since w/o 7/9/18.

Season to date, “Nightline” is beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+30,000 – 488,000 vs. 458,000) and Adults 18-49 (+29,000 – 369,000 vs. 340,000). 

Stories on “Nightline” last week included accounts from Santa Rosa police officers and other first responders from the night of the October 2017 Tubbs fire; the first joint television interview with the mother and stepfather of 7-year-old Kayden Mancuso one month after she was murdered; a report on Nike’s new advertisement featuring Colin Kaepernick that has sparked both protests and support from some sports fans; and the settlement details of Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle company Goop, which denies wrongdoing over alleged unsubstantiated product claims.

ABC’s ‘Miss America’ Takes the Entertainment Lead on Sunday from 9-11 p.m.

“The 2019 Miss America Competition” (7:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.3 million and 0.7/3 in AD18-49):
Opposite NFL-fueled competition from the season opener of NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” (Chicago Bears-Green Bay Packers) and Fox’s NFL overrun-driven lineup with the highly promoted series debut of “Rel,” ABC’s Sunday 9:00-11:00 p.m. telecast of “The 2019 Miss America Competition” built on its lead-in and grew from its first half-hour to its final half-hour in viewers. During its final half-hour from 10:30-11:00 p.m. as Miss New York, Nia Imani Franklin, was crowned, “The Miss America Competition” attracted 4.5 million viewers. ABC stood as the most-watched entertainment network in the 2-hour timeslot and also ranked No. 1 across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

ABC’s ‘Match Game’ Grows by Double Digits to Its Best Results Since July

ABC Thursday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 3.3 million and 0.6/3 in AD18-49)
Doubling its delivery week to week in Adults 18-49 (+100% – 0.6/3 vs. 0.3/2), ABC scored a 9-week Thursday night high against NBC’s opening game of the NFL season on the night – best since 7/5/18.

  • Returning for its first telecast in 3 weeks at 9:00 p.m. and airing out of a repeat “CFF,” ABC’s “Match Game” grew by double digits over its last telecast (on 8/16/18) in Total Viewers (+10% – 3.3 million vs. 3.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (+20% – 0.6/3 vs. 0.5/2), marking its best numbers since the end of July – since 7/26/18.

‘Nightline’ Improves Week to Week in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 and Delivers Its Largest Adults 18-49 Audience in 7 Weeks

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (1.067 million), Adults 25-54 (400,000) and Adults 18-49 (319,000), during the week of Aug. 27, 2018, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. 

“Nightline” improved on the previous week (381,000 and 279,000, respectively, for w/o 8/20/18) in Adults 25-54 (+5%) and Adults 18-49 (+14%), drawing its largest Adults 18-49 audience in 7 weeks – since w/o 7/9/18.

Season to date, “Nightline” is beating CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+28,000 – 489,000 vs. 461,000) and Adults 18-49 (+28,000 – 370,000 vs. 342,000). 

Stories on “Nightline” last week included a look at the lighter side of late Senator John McCain’s life, a preview of Arizona’s contentious primary race, Louis C.K.’s first performance in stand-up since admitting to sexual misconduct, a behind-the-scenes look at Ed Sheeran as he writes some of his hit songs, and a report on what you need to know to protect yourself from sharks ahead of Labor Day weekend.

NOTE:  For the week, repeats of CBS’ “The Late Late Show” were retitled to “The Late Late Show with James Corden-JC-ENC” and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” were retitled to “Late Night with Seth Meyers-SM.” The telecasts are excluded from the season averages.

ABC Wins Labor Day With ‘BIP’ as the No. 1 TV Series for the 4th Week in a Row

ABC Monday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 4.2 million and 1.1/5 in AD18-49):
With “Bachelor in Paradise” expanding to 3-hours, ABC won Labor Day Monday night by 38% in Adults 18-49 over runner-up NBC (1.1/5 vs. 0.8/4). In fact, the Net marked its 13th straight Monday as the No. 1 broadcaster on the evening. ABC was also Monday’s most-watched network overall, with a 5% advantage over NBC (4.2 million vs. 4.0 million). 

  • In viewers and young adults, ABC grew to 4-week highs on the night – best since the night of “The Bachelorette” finale on 8/6/18.



  • Airing from 8:00-11:00 p.m., ABC’s “Bachelor in Paradise” finished as Monday’s No. 1 TV series for the 4th week in a rowamong Adults 18-49 (1.1/5). From 8:00-10:00 p.m., the ABC unscripted show beat out NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” head-to-head by 10% (1.1/5 vs. 1.0/4). In addition, “BIP” retained its status as Monday’s top-rated broadcast show in Adults 18-34 and across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).
