Marco de la O as Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán in Univision’s “El Chapo”
Univision’s new ripped-from-the-headlines drama “El Chapo” continues with all new episodes airing back-to-back on Sunday, May 14 at 8PM and 9PM ET/PT. The boundary-breaking series explores the life story of one of the world’s most notorious criminals over a span of three decades – from 1985, when he was a low level member of the Guadalajara Cartel, his rise to power and his ultimate downfall.
On the seventh episode (8PM), El Chapo is delivered to the Mexican authorities and transferred to the Almoloya Maximum Security Prison. Don Sol is there waiting for him, ready to fulfill his first mission: force El Chapo to take the blame for the Cardinal’s murder, and negotiate his silence. El Chapo accepts, in exchange for a swift transfer to a less harsh prison. El Chapo makes himself available to Don Sol, who presents him to the media at a press conference as “The Capo of Capos when it comes to Mexican drug trafficking.” It is considered as a great triumph for the Mexican government in its fight on crime, and El Chapo’s first fall from grace is seen on television throughout the country.
On the eighth episode (9PM), while serving time at Almoloya, El Chapo is subjected to the harshest and most restrictive treatment. It would seem that it was barely worth negotiating with Don Sol, who—after thwarting General Blanco’s attempts at revenge and murder—has become an inaccessible figure consolidated in his circle of power. El Chapo is alone again, and turns to his old tools of the trade in order to get along: bribery, manipulation, and intimidation. But the rigid Almoloya system is relentless. Despite earning certain loyalties and winning a few small battles, El Chapo ends up being dealt the most severe hand of all: being confined to “Los Acolchonados,” “The Paddies,” as they’re called: the padded cells where prisoners are kept in solitary confinement.
“El Chapo,” currently in production, will air in three separate cycles and marks the first co-production between Story House Entertainment and Netflix. The series currently airs in Spanish with English-language Closed Captioning available. Versions with English-subtitles will be available when the series premieres globally on Netflix (date to be announced).
The series stars Marco de la O (Tanto Amor) as Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán; Humberto Busto (Amores Perros) as Attorney Conrado Sol, aka “Don Sol” (an important political party figure); Juan Carlos Olivas (180°) as El Güero (Joaquín’s main partner); Alejandro Aguilar (“Rosario Tijeras”) as Toño (Joaquín's main assassin); Tete Espinoza (“Wenses y Lala”) as Chío (Joaquín’s lover); Rodrigo Abed (Reevolución) as Amado (Mexican capo); Luis Rábago (Principio y Fin) as General Blanco (National Security Advisor); Cristina Michaus (El Tigre de Santa Julia) as Doña Esperanza (Joaquín’s mother); Valentina Acosta (“Señora Acero”) as Alejandra (Joaquín’s first wife); and Juliette Pardau (“De Todas Maneras Rosa”) as Graciela (Joaquín’s second wife). ‘El Chapo’ is created by Silvana Aguirre Zegarra and Carlos Contreras and produced by Daniel Posada. The first season is directed by Jose Manuel Cravioto and Ernesto Contreras.
Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, who has been accused by law enforcement of running the “largest drug trafficking organization in the world,” has long evaded authorities. After being captured by Mexican authorities in February 2014, Guzman escaped from a maximum security Mexican prison in July 2015 by crawling through an opening in the shower of his cell block that led to a mile-long tunnel to freedom. He was recaptured nearly six months later and extradited to the U.S. earlier this year. His next scheduled court appearance is on May 5, 2017.
