In October 1959, The Untouchables debuted on ABC, starring Robert Stack (Unsolved Mysteries, Airplane!) as "Eliot Ness" and airing weekly for 4 seasons. All four seasons have been released on DVD by CBS/Paramount between 2007 and 2012, and The Complete Series came to DVD about a year ago.
But that wasn't the ENTIRE show, actually, and the October '59 debut wasn't the actual start of the program! On April 20 and April 27th of 1959, the Westinghouse Desilu Playhouse anthology program, hosted by Desi Arnez, aired a two-part episode called "The Untouchables," starring Robert Stack as "Eliot Ness" and Neville Brand as "Al Capone." This two-parter acted as a pilot for The Untouchables. Later on, it would be put together into a single 100+ minute film, and be released theatrically as "The Scarface Mob." In releasing The Untouchables on DVD, CBS/Paramount has NOT included this pilot with the rest of the show. Now CBS Home Entertainment and Paramount Home Media Distribution has announced that on July 18th they would release The Untouchables - The Scarface Mob on DVD. It's a single-disc release, and we've got an early look at the cover art below (may not be finalized yet, and could be subject to change). But first, here's the studio's description of this item:
Don't miss this action-packed thriller that inspired the classic television series! The original pilot for the classic series, The Untouchables, starring Robert Stack as Elliot Ness and Neville Brand as Al Capone; released theatrically as The Scarface Mob. Features appearances by Desi Arnaz and Walter Winchell from the Desilu Playhouse broadcast. |
