When that beloved beater is on its last legs, it may be correct to start thinking about taking it to the junkyard. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The proud vehicles that serve as America’s commuter cars can also kick ass on a race track, if you’re willing to take a few liberties with how many wheels it needs. Winston-Salem North Carolina is the home of Bowman Gray race track, very much the spiritual home of making stock cars (in the most literal sense) run races.
ABOUT CAR VS. AMERICA
The 12-part, half hour series follows the perspective of Jalopnik’s car-obsessed editors, Michael Ballaban and Raphael Orlove, as they travel throughout the U.S. in search of adventure in the weirdest, most wonderful and questionable cars they could get their hands on. The guys are out to see what current car culture looks like — from skid plate racing and drifting, to extreme off-roading and beyond. In each episode, these two young car nerds attempt to tackle various car based challenges that bring the singular automotive knowledge and know-how of Jalopnik.com to television. Mike and Raph will meet up with local experts along the way, who will help them with everything from getting to know the mechanics, to figuring out how not to panic as they round a turn at breakneck speed.
