SILVER SPRING, MD – When TV One’s new biopic, Bobbi Kristina, premieres on Sunday, October 8 at 7 p.m. ET, film star Demetria McKinney wants young women to pay attention during the commercial break just as much as  her uncanny portrayal of the legendary Whitney Houston in the movie. That’s where    she will  address one of the most important messages of the film, domestic violence awareness, through a new TV One public service announcement developed in partnership with the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

“Everyone deserves a loving relationship, but no one deserves to be abused emotionally or physically,” says McKinney in the PSA.

Bobbi Kristina is a made-for-TV biopic inspired by the life of Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown's only child, Bobbi Kristina Brown, who grew up in the shadow of her superstar parents' spotlight. This film explores the sometimes volatile relationship that she experienced with then-boyfriend Nick Gordon. Gordon was found legally responsible for Bobbi Kristina’s death in 2016.

In an effort to reinforce the film’s underlying message that real love doesn’t hurt, TV One, in partnership with the National Domestic Violence Hotline, will air a public service announcement during the film’s presentation. Still a prevalent issue facing Americans of every background, one in 4 women and 1 in 7 men over the age of 18 have been victims of physical violence by an intimate partner, according to the National Domestic Violence Hotline.

“Domestic violence happens far too often in our communities, and The Hotline is pleased to see TV One and everyone involved with the Bobbi Kristina biopic leveraging their platforms to talk about this critical social issue,” said Cameka Crawford, chief communications officer at the National Domestic Violence Hotline. “We can only prevent and end domestic violence by shifting the narrative to say that abuse of any kind is not okay and creating a culture where victims and survivors know that they are not alone.”

Additionally, TV One partnered with Saving Our Daughters, an organization whose mission is to empower teenage girls from multicultural backgrounds through theater, music, film and television, to help overcome many obstacles such as bullying (cyber, gossip, face-to-face), dating abuse, domestic violence and other esteem slayers.

On Saturday September 30, Bobbi Kristina cast members Vivica A. Fox, Joy Rovaris and McKinney met with young ladies from the Covenant House of New York during the annual Circle of Sisters event held in New York City. The film stars took time to discuss very important issues that have impacted the young ladies, such as homelessness, self-esteem, positive thinking and staying focused.

"At Covenant House New York, we work every day to support youth who are trying to navigate a world that has not always been kind to them. The opportunity for our girls to be in a sacred space with Bobbi Kristina’s Vivica A. Fox, Demetria McKinney, and Joy Rovaris where they could be nurtured and celebrated with genuine kindness, was indeed invaluable,” says Shakeema North, director of Youth Development, Covenant House New York. “By answering our girls’ questions and giving them tools for overcoming life's challenges, it really brought a sense joy to the hearts of our young ladies. It let them know that there are people out there that still care and want the best for them. I can still see the smiles on their faces.”

Bobbi Kristina premieres Sunday, October 8 at 7 p.m. ET on TV One.
