‘The Bachelorette’ Closes at a 2-Year High and Scores the Summer’s Top Telecast

ABC Monday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.7 million and 1.6/8 in AD18-49):
With the conclusion of the 2-night season finale for “The Bachelorette,” ABC dominated prime time for the 2nd straight night, outrunning 2nd place NBC by 45% in Adults 18-49 (1.6/8 vs. 1.1/5). In viewers (5.7 million) and young adults (1.6/8), ABC marked its top summer Tuesday with entertainment programming in more than 3 years – since 6/7/16. 

Airing from 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Bachelorette” finale emerged as the clear No. 1 TV program for the 2nd night in a row, besting runner-up NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” by 75% head-to-head in the 2-hour slot among Adults 18-49 (2.1/10 vs. 1.2/6). In fact, Part 1 (1.9/10) and Part 2 (2.1/10) of “The Bachelorette” season 15 finale qualify as the Top 2 highest-rated L+SD entertainment telecasts this summer.

·       Building night to night in viewers (+3%) and young adults (+11%) to close out at season highs, “The Bachelorette” rose over its year-ago finale (6.7 million and 1.8/8 on 8/6/18) by 10% in Total Viewers and by 17% in Adults 18-49 to score the show’s top telecast in 2 years – since its 2017 season finale. 

Social Highlights:
·       ABC’s “The Bachelorette” ranked as the No. 1 entertainment program across broadcast and cable on Tuesday night, earning a season-best 2.2 million total social interactions.

Season to Date, ‘World News Tonight’ Is Posting Biggest Lead Over NBC in 23 Years and CBS in at Least 27 Years

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” stood as the evening’s No. 1 newscast in Total Viewers (7.974 million), Adults 25-54 (1.470 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.029 million) for the 2nd week in a row for the week of July 22, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (6.967 million, 1.468 million and 997,000, respectively) by 1.007 million Total Viewers, by 2,000 Adults 25-54 and by 32,000 Adults 18-49, winning in Total Viewers for the 43rd time in the 44 weeks of the season. Further, “World News Tonight” has beaten “NBC Nightly News” by more than 1.0 million viewers for the 3rd straight week and in 4 of the last 5. 

“World News Tonight” was the only evening newscast to improve on its Total Viewer performance both week to week (+94,000/+1% – 7.974 million vs. 7.880 million for w/o 7/15/19) and year to year (+100,000/+1% – 7. 974 million vs. 7.874 million for w/o 7/23/18).

For the week, “World News Tonight” led “CBS Evening News” by 3.238 million Total Viewers, by 557,000 Adults 25-54 and by 386,000 Adults 18-49, turning in its largest overall viewer lead in over 24 years – since w/o 4/17/95. 

Season to date, “World News Tonight” ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 3rd year in a row after finishing as the No. 1 evening newscast for the last 2 seasons. “World News Tonight” (8.668 million) leads “NBC Nightly News” (8.049 million) by 619,000, delivering its largest Total Viewer lead in 23 years (since the 1995-1996 season) and “CBS Evening News” (5.972 million) by 2.696 million, posting its biggest Total Viewer advantage in at least 27 years (since at least the start of Nielsen electronic database in 1991-1992 season). 

In addition, “World News Tonight” is cutting its season margins with NBC by more than half in both Adults 25-54 (-66% – 25,000 vs. 73,000) and Adults 18-49 (-70% – 26,000 vs. 88,000), posting its closest Adults 18-49 performance 12 years – since the 2006-2007 season.

In fact, with its “Summer Fun & Games” lineup from 8:00-11:00 p.m., ABC won all three hoursin Total Viewers. “Celebrity Family Feud” (5.6 million) and “The $100,000 Pyramid” (4.9 million) ranked as the night’s Top 2 entertainment programs in Total Viewers, leading ABC to its most-watched Sunday in 7 weeks—since 6/9/19.

  • ABC’s “Celebrity Family Feud” grew for the 2nd week in a row in Total Viewers (+2% – 5.6 million vs. 5.5 million) to post its biggest audience since its season premiere—since 6/9/19.



  • ABC’s “The $100,000 Pyramid” built over the prior week by 7% in Total Viewers (4.9 million vs. 4.6 million) and by double digits among Adults 18-49 (+14% – 0.8/4 vs. 0.7/4) to match its highest-rated telecast since its season opener—since 6/9/19.

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.521 million Total Viewers, 391,000 Women 25-54 and 281,000 Women 18-49, during the week of July 15, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.



“The View” saw week-to-week (w/o 7/8/19) increases across the board:  Total Viewers (+2% – 2.521 million vs. 2.469 million), Women 25-54 (+3% – 391,000 vs. 381,000) and Women 18-49 (+3% – 281,000 vs. 272,000). “The View” hit a 5-week high in Total Viewers and Women 18-49, and a 6-week best in Women 25-54 – since weeks of 6/10/19 and 6/3/19, respectively.



Season to date, amongst all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs (24 Total), “The View” (2.768 million) ranks No. 4, trailing only “Dr. Phil” (3.997 million), “Ellen” (2.960 million) and “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (2.923 million).

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (1.026 million) for the 3rd week in a row for the week of July 15, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.  “Nightline” led CBS’ “The Late Late Show-JC-ENC(940,000) by 86,000 and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (1.006 million) by 20,000.



“Nightline” also beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show-JC-ENC” in Adults 25-54 (+47,000 – 315,000 vs. 268,000) and Adults 18-49 (+45,000 – 235,000 vs. 190,000).  



Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+26,000 – 436,000 vs. 410,000) and Adults 18-49 (+24,000 – 322,000 vs. 298,000).



Stories reported on ”Nightline” last week included the fight to fix South Africa’s epidemic of violence against women, an interview with Dr. Ruth to discuss how she revolutionized conversations about sex, a look at Latina director Tanya Saracho shaking up the lack of diversity in Hollywood with representation on- and off-screen, the inner workings of the Russian justice system with one American’s two-year odyssey in a Moscow jail, and concerns about AI and privacy sparked by a viral app.

ABC’s “The Bachelorette” achieved a new season high on Monday and emerged as the week’s No. 1 TV show among Adults 18-49, beating out NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” for the first time this summer.

Rankings: With “The Bachelorette” claiming the top spot, ABC delivered 5 of the week’s Top 10 broadcast programs in Adults 18-49: “The Bachelorette” – No. 1, “Celebrity Family Feud” – No. 6, while “The Lion King: Can You Feel the Love Tonight with Robin Roberts,” “Press Your Luck” and “The $100,000 Pyramid” tied at No. 10.

ABC Monday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 5.3 million and 1.3/7 in AD18-49):

Fueled by “The Bachelorette: The Men Tell All” hitting its best numbers since 2015, ABC won Monday night by wide margins, outrunning its nearest competition (NBC with “American Ninja Warrior”/”Dateline”) by 18% in Total Viewers (5.3 million vs. 4.5 million) and by 63% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/7 vs. 0.8/4). Holding even at the prior week’s highs, ABC once again posted its strongest Monday numbers with entertainment programming this summer.



From 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Bachelorette: The Men Tell All” ranked as Monday’s top show in Total Viewers (6.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.7/9), as “The Bachelorette” has now finished as the night’s No. 1 TV series on each of its 10 telecasts this season with young adults. Head-to-head in the 2-hour time period, ABC’s “The Men Tell All” dominated NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” (4.7 million and 0.8/4) by 1.9 million viewers and more than doubled it with Adults 18-49 (+113%).



·       “The Bachelorette” grew for the 3rd week in a row to a new season high in Total Viewers (+2% – 6.6 million vs. 6.4 million) and held even at its season best set last week in Adults 18-49 (1.7/9). Further, “The Bachelorette” improved by 20% in Total Viewers and by 31% in Adults 18-49 over the year-ago “The Men Tell All” (5.5 million and 1.3/6, respectively, on 7/30/18) to score 4-year highs on both Nielsen measures – since 2015.

“The View” was up compared to the prior week of original telecasts (w/o 6/24/19) in Women 25-54 (+2% – 381,000 vs. 374,000).

Season to date, amongst all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs (24 Total), “The View” (2.773 million) ranks No. 4, trailing only “Dr. Phil” (4.047 million), “Ellen” (3.012 million) and “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (2.945 million).

“Nightline” saw week-to-week gains (1.046 million, 325,000 and 239,000, respectively, for w/o 7/1/19) across the board: Total Viewers (+8%), Adults 25-54 (+5%) and Adults 18-49 (+9%), hitting a 4-week high in Total Viewers – w/o 6/10/19.

ABC’s lineup with “The Bachelorette” and “Grand Hotel” dominated Monday night, beating 2nd-place NBC with “American Ninja Warrior” and “Dateline” by 23% in Total Viewers (5.3 million vs. 4.3 million) and by 63% in Adults 18-49 (1.3/7 vs. 0.8/4). In addition, ABC delivered its strongest Monday numbers with entertainment programming of the summer.

  • From 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Bachelorette” finished as Monday’s top TV program in Total Viewers (6.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.7/8), standing as the night’s No. 1 TV series on each of its 9 telecasts of the season in young adults. Head-to-head in the 2-hour time period, “The Bachelorette” towered over NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” (4.5 million and 0.9/4) by 1.9 million viewers and by 89% in Adults 18-49. “The Bachelorette” improved for the 2nd straight week in Total Viewers (+7% – 6.4 million vs. 6.0 million) and by double digits in Adults 18-49 (+13% – 1.7/8 vs. 1.5/8), hitting new season highsin both measures. Further, “The Bachelorette” grew by 8% in Total Viewers and by 21% in Adults 18-49 compared to the year-ago “overnight dates” telecast (5.9 million and 1.4/6, respectively, on 7/23/18).



  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Grand Hotel” saw double-digit gains week to week in Total Viewers (+11% – 3.1 million vs. 2.8 million) and Adults 18-49 (+20% – 0.6/3 vs. 0.5/3). In addition, the new ABC drama won its hour in Women 18-34, more than doubled its nearest competition (+133% – 0.7/5 vs. 0.3/2 for NBC’s “Dateline”) and grew 40% week to week to hit a new series high.

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (1.046 million) and Adults 18-49 (239,000) during the week of July 1, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.

“Nightline” was up in Total Viewers week to week (+3,000 – 1.046 million vs. 1.043 million for w/o 7/1/19).

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+30,000 – 440,000 vs. 410,000) and Adults 18-49 (+28,000 – 326,000 vs. 298,000).

Stories reported on “Nightline” last week included a look at recent shark attacks and scares; “America’s Sexiest Vet” discussing using his skills on animals in underserved communities and remote areas; an interview with longtime Beyoncé choreographer Chris Grant; and an examination of the feud between Taylor Swift, her former record label and Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun.

NOTE: For the week, CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” were retitled due to being encore telecasts. The retitled telecasts will not be included in the season averages. In addition, “Nightline” was coded as specials on Thursday (7/4/19) and Friday (7/5/19) due to the 4th of July holiday. Each telecast is excluded from the weekly averages.  ABC’s averages are based on three days (Monday-Wednesday).

In fact, ABC turned in its most-watched Monday with entertainment programming this summer.

  • From 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC’s “The Bachelorette” stood as Monday’s top TV program for the 4th week running in Total Viewers (6.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.5/7), standing as the night’s No. 1 TV series on each of its 8 telecasts of the season in young adults. Head-to-head in the 2-hour time period, “The Bachelorette” dominated NBC’s “American Ninja Warrior” (4.5 million and 0.9/4) by 1.5 million viewers and by 67% in Adults 18-49. “The Bachelorette” grew over the prior week in Total Viewers by 5% to a new season high, while holding even at a season high in Adults 18-49 (5.7 million and 1.5/8, respectively, for 7/1/19).



  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “Grand Hotel” held steady from the previous week in Total Viewers (2.9 million vs. 3.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (0.5/3 vs. 0.6/3). In addition, the new ABC drama won its hour by 100% over its nearest competition in Women 18-34 (0.6/4 vs. 0.3/2 for NBC’s “Dateline”) and grew 20% week to week.

ABC ranked No. 1 for the 2nd straight week on Sunday among Adults 18-49 (0.7/4) and topped CBS’ all-original lineup by 5% in Total Viewers (4.5 million vs. 4.3 million) to stand as the night’s most-watched network. In fact, with its “Summer Fun & Games” lineup from 8:00-11:00 p.m., ABC won all three hours in Total Viewers.

  • At 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “Celebrity Family Feud” built week to week by 6% in Total Viewers (5.2 million vs. 4.9 million) and by 13% with Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 0.8/4). A growingCFF” won its hour for the 2nd week in a row in Viewers and widened its lead over CBS’ “Big Brother-Sunday” to 18% this week (5.2 million vs. 4.4 million) versus 14% the prior week. In addition, “CFF” ran neck-and-neck with “Big Brother” as Sunday’s No. 1 TV show in Adults 18-49, coming within 1-tenth of a rating point (0.9/4 vs. 1.0/5).



  • In the 9:00 p.m. hour, ABC’s “The $100,000 Pyramid” grew for its 2nd consecutive telecast in Total Viewers (+4% – 4.8 million vs. 4.6 million) and Adults 18-49 (+14% – 0.8/4 vs. 0.7/4) to score best-since-premiere numbers – since 6/9/19. Ranking No. 1 in the hour, “The $100,000 Pyramid” dominated its slot by 41% in Total Viewers over CBS’ “Instinct” (3.4 million) and once again more than doubled the CBS drama among Adults 18-49 (+167% – 0.3/1).

  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “To Tell the Truth” ranked No. 1 in its hour for its 2nd straight telecast in Total Viewers (3.7 million) and for its 3rd telecast in a row among Adults 18-49 (0.7/4).

2nd Quarter 2019:
ABC News’ “Nightline” drew 1.207 million Total Viewers, 425,000 Adults 25-54 and 324,000 Adults 18-49 during the 2nd Quarter 2019, based on Most Current Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” led CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (383,000 and 267,000, respectively) during the quarter in Adults 25-54 (+43,000) and Adults 18-49 (+57,000).  

“Nightline” improved over the previous quarter in Adults 18-49 (+2% – 324,000 vs. 317,000 for 1Q19).

“Nightline” widened its leads over CBS’ “The Late Late Show James Corden” from the previous quarter (1Q19) in Adults 25-54 (+40% – 42,000 vs. 30,000) and Adults 18-49 (+185% – 57,000 vs. 20,000).

“Nightline” increased its advantage over CBS’ “The Late Late Show James Corden” from the year-ago quarter in Adults 18-49 (+21% – 57,000 vs. 47,000 for 2Q18).

“Nightline” decreased its gaps quarter to quarter (1Q19) with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in all key target demos: Total Viewers (-22% – 132,000 vs. 170,000), Adults 25-54 (-55% – 43,000 vs. 94,000) and Adults 18-49 (-78% – 18,000 vs. 82,000). “Nightline” saw its closest-ever performance with the NBC program during any quarter in Adults 18-49 and 2nd best-ever in Adults 25-54 – since “Seth Meyers” debuted in February 2014 and behind only 1Q15, respectively.

“Nightline” slashed its margins compared to the year-ago quarter (2Q18) with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” across the board: Total Viewers (-6% – 132,000 vs. -141,000), Adults 25-54 (-48% – 43,000 vs. 83,000) and Adults 18-49 (-67% – 18,000 vs. 55,000), turning in its closest performances ever during a 2nd quarter in both key Adults demos – since “Seth Meyers” debuted in February 2014.  

Week of June 24, 2019:
ABC News’ “Nightline” averaged 1.043 million Total Viewers, 342,000 Adults 25-54 and 270,000 Adults 18-49 during the week of June 24, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden-JC-ENC” (994,000, 295,000 and 192,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+49,000), Adults 25-54 (+47,000) and Adults 18-49 (+78,000).  

“Nightline” narrowed its Adults 18-49 margin year to year (w/o 6/25/18) with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (-38% – 20,000 vs. 32,000).

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+33,000 – 442,000 vs. 409,000) and Adults 18-49 (+29,000 – 327,000 vs. 298,000).

  • Spiking over its repeat “America’s Funniest Home Videos” lead-in by 1.0 million viewers at 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “Celebrity Family Feud” returned for its first telecast in three weeks and topped CBS’ time-slot premiere of CBS’ “Big Brother” to win the hour in Total Viewers (+9% – 4.9 million vs. 4.5 million) and rank as Sunday’s most-watched entertainment program. “CFF” ran a strong 2nd in the hour with Adults 18-49 (0.8/4) and ranked as Sunday’s No. 2 TV show.

  • At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “The $100,000 Pyramid” won its hour and grew over its last telecast two weeks ago by 35% in Total Viewers (4.6 million vs. 3.4 million) and by 17% in Adults 18-49 (0.7/4 vs. 0.6/3). In the hour, ABC’s “$100,000 Pyramid” dominated CBS’ premiere of “Instinct” (3.6 million and 0.3/1), leading by 1.0 million viewers and more than doubling it among Adults 18-49 (+133%).
  • At 10:00 p.m., ABC’s “To Tell the Truth” topped its hour and rose over its last telecast two weeks ago by 17% in Total Viewers (4.1 million vs. 3.5 million) and by 17% in Adults 18-49 (0.7/4 vs. 0.6/3).
