CBS News continues to be the #1 most-watched broadcast network for special coverage of the Senate impeachment trial. On every weekday last week and this week, CBS topped the broadcast networks (Tuesday, Jan. 21 through Friday, Jan. 24 and Monday, Jan. 27 and Tuesday, Jan. 28) in total viewers.
The CBS News Special Report on Tuesday, Jan. 28 attracted the highest audience among the broadcast networks, according to Nielsen live plus same day-ratings. On Tuesday, CBS News’ coverage drew 1.34 million viewers, beating NBC by +461,000 viewers (876,000) and ABC by +140,000 viewers (1.20 million).

In viewers, THE LATE SHOW has won every first-run week this season.
With live plus 3-day and live plus 7-day ratings this season, THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT delivers 3.69 million viewers, 0.7 in adults 25-54 and 0.5 in adults 18-49 – leading among all the late night programs in these measures. THE LATE SHOW leads second-place NBC (2.01m) by +84% and third-place ABC (1.94m) by +90%.

NEW YORK – Jan. 27, 2020 – CBS All Access, CBS’ digital subscription video on demand and live streaming service, today announced the service has already hit a new record for subscriber sign-ups in a month, following the premiere of STAR TREK: PICARD, last night’s live stream of THE 62ND ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS® and a great month of football. January 2020 surpassed the previous monthly record of February 2019. In addition, last week marked the second-best sign-up week ever for the service, following closely behind the week of the 2019 Super Bowl.
In addition to the record month for subscriber sign-ups, STAR TREK: PICARD’s premiere also marked a new record for total streams and drove the highest volume of subscribers streaming a CBS All Access original series to date, up more than +115% and +180% over the previous record set by STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, making the series the service’s most-watched premiere ever.

CBS IS STILL “AMERICA’S MOST-WATCHED NETWORK”

CBS took the ratings crown for the second time in 2020. For the week ending Sunday, Jan. 26 (week 18 of the 2019-2020 broadcast season), the Network attracted 7.18 million viewers, beating the closest competition (ABC) by over +3.2 million viewers (3.94 million, +82%).
On Monday, CBS was first in viewers (6.17m). THE NEIGHBORHOOD was second in viewers (6.81m) and was Monday’s #1 scripted program in viewers. BOB ABISHOLA was second in viewers (6.50m). ALL RISE (3.7/07, 5.81m) was up +20% in adults 18-49 (0.6/03 from 0.5/03) compared to the last first-run episode on Jan. 6. At 10:00 PM, BULL was first in viewers (6.05m).
On Tuesday, CBS was first in viewers (9.06m) behind NCIS (11.36m). The drama was the night’s #1 program in viewers with its largest audience since Nov. 12, 2019. FBI was also tops in viewers (9.24m) and was the night’s #2 program in viewers behind NCIS. At 10:00 PM, FBI: MOST WANTED was first in viewers (6.59m).
On Friday, CBS was first in viewers (5.14m) with encores of HAWAII FIVE-0 (5.29m), MAGNUM P.I. (4.99m) and BLUE BLOODS (5.13m) taking the night for the 13th consecutive Friday.
Saturday night’s episode of 48 HOURS (3.49m) was the evening’s top prime program in viewers with its largest audience since Nov. 2, 2019.
It was a special Sunday as CBS won the night in viewers (15.93m), adults 25-54 (5.3/19) and adults 18-49 (4.4/20) while more than doubling NBC, ABC and FOX combined in viewers (vs. 7.23m, +120%) and adults 25-54 (vs. 2.0, +165%) and more than tripling in adults 18-49 (vs. 1.4, +214%). CBS posted its best Sunday deliveries in these measures since Feb. 10, 2019 (GRAMMY Sunday last year).
THE GRAMMYS RED CARPET (7:00-8:00 PM) was first in viewers (7.19m), adults 25-54 (1.9/08) and adults 18-49 (1.5/07). THE 62nd ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS (8:00-11:09 pm) delivered 18.69 million viewers, 6.4/23 in adults 25-54, 5.4/24 in adults 18-49 and 4.0/26 in adults 18-34 – dominating the 8:00-11:00 PM time slot. THE 62nd ANNUAL GRAMMY AWARDS was Sunday’s #1 program in viewers and key demos and posted the largest primetime audience and best demo deliveries for any non-sports/entertainment programming this season. Nielsen Media Research reports that 38.4 million viewers watched all or part of the broadcast.

48 HOURS: “Live to Tell: Murder on Prom Night” was Saturday’s #1 primetime program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Saturday, Jan. 25. The broadcast delivered 3.49 million viewers and posted the broadcast’s largest audience since Nov. 2, 2019. 48 HOURS was up +3% in viewers from the previous week.
Saturday’s broadcast was anchored by Jim Axelrod and featured the heartbreaking and inspiring story of Jessi Toronjo’s search for answers after her family was murdered when she was just 9 years old and how she has tried to cope with her terrible past. Told through Toronjo’s point of view, she tells viewers how her family was torn apart by murder in 1989 then rocked again 17 years later when her stepbrother, Jeff Pelley, was convicted for the crime. Authorities believed Jeff Pelley killed his family over an argument over the prom.
Jeff Pelley was convicted of murder in 2006. His attorneys have always maintained that he is innocent, and today a new legal team is making a new push for his release.
“Live to Tell” is a short-run series from the producers of 48 HOURS delivering first-person accounts of extraordinary people who refuse to give up when facing possible death and hardship. 48 HOURS: “Live to Tell: Murder on Prom Night” is produced by Chris O’Connell and Stephanie Slifer. In viewers, THE LATE SHOW has won every first-run week this season. 

With live plus 3-day and live plus 7-day ratings this season, THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT delivers 3.70 million viewers, 0.7 in adults 25-54 and 0.5 in adults 18-49 – leading among all the late night programs in these measures. THE LATE SHOW leads second-place NBC (2.02m) by +83% and third-place ABC (1.95m) by +90%.

Finally, on Tuesday, Jan. 14, the live post-Democratic candidates debate episode, featuring presidential candidate (and former New York City mayor) Michael Bloomberg, attracted 4.22 million viewers, the show’s largest Tuesday live plus 3-day audience since Sept. 30, 2019.

“CBS THIS MORNING: SATURDAY” CUTS THE GAP WITH COMPETITORS AND POSTS BEST DEMO DELIVERY SINCE APRIL
CBS THIS MORNING: SATURDAY cut the gap with competitors from last year and posted its best demo delivery since April, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Saturday, Jan. 18.
The broadcast delivered 2.16 million viewers and 559,000 in the adult 25-54 category, its best since April 20, 2019. CBS THIS MORNING: SATURDAY was up +2%, the only morning news program to grow in viewers from the previous week, and +27% in the demo.
CBS THIS MORNING: SATURDAY closed the gap from last year with “Saturday Today” by 40% and “GMA: Saturday” by 30%. It also delivered its smallest gaps with both competitors in three weeks.

48 HOURS: “Chacey Poynter: Witness to Murder” was Saturday’s #1 broadcast with viewers at 10:00 PM, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Saturday, Jan. 18.
The broadcast delivered 3.40 million viewers, 0.7/03 with adults 25-54 and a 0.5/03 with adults 18-49. 48 HOURS was up +40% in adults 25-54 (from 0.5/02), +67% in adults 18-49 (from 0.3/02) and added +920,000 viewers (from 2.48m, +38%), compared to the last first-run broadcast on Dec. 21, 2019.
Saturday’s broadcast featured Peter Van Sant and 48 HOURS investigation into the 2016 murder of a Texas firefighter Robert Poynter and the case against his wife, Chacey Poynter, who told her side of the story for the first time on television.
Poynter, a veteran firefighter and paramedic, was shot in the head while sitting in his wife’s Jeep, on an unmaintained county road in Royse City, Texas. His wife, Chacey Poynter, told police she’d called her husband for help after she claimed her Jeep was stuck in mud. Chacey Poynter claims when Robert Poynter got in to help move the vehicle, he was shot by a man who emerged from the dark. She told police she had no idea who fired the fatal shot.
From the moment police arrived at the scene, they were skeptical of Poynter’s story of what happened. Everything she told them – in breathless and halting sentences – was captured by police body cameras, including an admission that she was having problems in her marriage. Later, at the police station, she confessed that she did know the identity of the man who killed her husband – a lover by the name of Michael Garza.
The investigation into the murder exposed the fractured relationship between the Poynters, including a twisted plot for killing the 47-year-old firefighter, whose wife, then 29, had carried on multiple extra-marital affairs. Prosecutors maintain Poynter plotted out the murder with Garza to cash in on her husband’s life insurance policy.

60 MINUTES made the Nielsen top 10 list for a fifth straight time, drawing 10.12 million viewers to land at #8, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Sunday, Jan. 12. It was the 11th time this season that 60 MINUTES made the top 10.
The CBS newsmagazine also made the prestigious list in the key demos, scoring a 2.1/07 in adults 25-54 to tie at #8 and a 1.5/06 among adults 18-49 to tie for #9.
60 MINUTES was Sunday’s #1 non-sports program in viewers.
Sunday’s 60 MINUTES featured John Dickerson’s report on the climate-change-related historic flooding in Venice, Italy; an Anderson Cooper profile of Oscar-nominated actor Joaquin Phoenix; and a profile of the #1 tennis player, Rafael Nadal, by Jon Wertheim.

CBS SUNDAY MORNING marked its 575th consecutive week as America’s #1 Sunday morning news program with viewers, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Sunday, Jan. 12.
The broadcast, anchored by Jane Pauley, delivered 5.81 million viewers and 1.203 million in the adults 25-54 category. CBS SUNDAY MORNING was also #1 for the 171st consecutive week with adults 25-54, the demographic of those most interested in advertising in news.
Sunday’s broadcast included Jan Crawford’s story on pregnancy discrimination in the workplace. Kristine Johnson caught up with critically acclaimed musician Gary Clark, Jr. Chip Reid took a close look at the octopus and discovered they are not only fascinating but also highly intelligent creatures. Mo Rocca sat down with actor Kim Novak, who counts among her long list of credits the acclaimed Alfred Hitchcock film “Vertigo.” Charlie D’Agata talked with former Nissan CEO and fugitive Carlos Ghosn. Seth Doane looked at the appeal of pistachio nuts. Steve Hartman reported on a new branch in the Hartman family tree. And David Sedaris offered some thoughts on the “Eurostar.”

For the fourth quarter of 2019 (late September – December 2019) with Nielsen live plus 7-day ratings, THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT beat its closest competition (“The Tonight Show”) by +83% in viewers (3.69m versus 2.02m). THE LATE SHOW was also tops in adults 25-54 (0.7 versus 0.6 for “Tonight”) and in adults 18-49 (0.5 versus 0.4 for “Tonight”). This marks the first fourth quarter THE LATE SHOW with STEPHEN COLBERT is in sole possession of first place in both adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 rating.
Also during the fourth quarter, THE LATE SHOW was the #1 show in late night for current content on YouTube (clips posted during the 2019 calendar year) with 343 million views. CBS took the ratings crown for the first week of the new year, kicking off the second half of the season with a strong performance. For the week ending Sunday, Jan. 5 (week 15 of the 2019-2020 broadcast season), the Network attracted 7.79 million viewers, beating the closest competition (NBC, which had the Golden Globes) by over +1 million viewers (6.63 million, +18%). This was CBS’ largest weekly audience since the week ending April 7, 2019.

On Monday, CBS was first in viewers (4.21m), tied for first with ABC in adults 25-54 (0.7/03) and tied for second in adults 18-49 (0.4/02, with NBC, -0.1 behind ABC). Encores ruled as THE NEIGHBORHOOD (R) was first in viewers (5.09m) and adults 25-54 (0.9/04) and tied for first (with ABC) in adults 18-49 (0.6/03). At 8:30 PM, BOB ♥ ABISHOLA (R) was first in viewers (4.37m), while at 9:00 PM, ALL RISE (R) was also most-watched in its hour with 3.69 million viewers. At 10:00 PM, an encore of BULL was also first in viewers (4.20m). 

The Network continued its Friday domination with original episodes driving the Eye to season-best deliveries in all key measures. For the night, CBS was first in viewers (7.86m), adults 25-54 (1.2/05) and adults 18-49 (0.8/04). This marks the 14th time and tenth consecutive week the Network was first in viewers. 

The 8:00 PM hour of the HAWAII FIVE-0/MAGNUM P.I. crossover was first in viewers (8.06m), adults 25-54 (1.3/06) and adults 18-49 (0.9/05). Compared to the last first-run episode on Dec. 13, 2019, HAWAII FIVE-0 was up +30% in adults 25-54 (from 1.0/05) and +50% in adults 18-49 (from 0.6/04) and added +1.49 million viewers (from 6.57m, +23%). HAWAII FIVE-0 posted its largest audience since Feb. 2, 2018 and delivered season-best adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 ratings. HAWAII FIVE-0 was Friday’s #1 program in viewers, adults 25-54 and adults 18-49. The 9:00 PM hour of the crossover was first in viewers (7.83m), adults 25-54 (1.2/05) and adults 18-49 (0.8/04). Compared to the last first-run episode on Dec. 13, 2019, MAGNUM P.I. was up +33% in both adults 25-54 (from 0.9/04) and adults 18-49 (from 0.6/03) and added +1.70 million viewers (from 6.13m, +28%). MAGNUM P.I. posted its second-largest regularly scheduled audience EVER, and hit Friday best adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 ratings. MAGNUM P.I. was the night’s #2 program in viewers, adults 25-54 and adults 18-49 (tied with “20/20 Friday”), behind HAWAII FIVE-0. Rounding out Friday at 10:00 PM, BLUE BLOODS was first in viewers (7.68m). Compared to the last first-run episode on Dec. 6, 2019, BLUE BLOODS added +340,000 viewers (from 7.34m, +5%).  

On Saturday evening, the AFC WILDCARD PLAYOFFS, “Tennessee Titans at New England Patriots,” was first in viewers, key men and key adult demographics from 8:00-11:00 PM. CBS posted the Network’s best Saturday primetime delivery since Jan. 14, 2017 (AFC DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF, “Houston Texans at New England Patriots”), in viewers and men 18-34, and the best delivery since Jan. 13, 2018 (AFC DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF, “Tennessee Titans at New England Patriots”) in adults 25-54, men 25-54, adults 18-49 and men 18-49. Overall, the AFC WILDCARD PLAYOFFS delivered 31.42 million viewers, 10.7/39 in adults 25-54, 8.9/40 in adults 18-49, 6.7/42 in adults 18-34, 13.7/49 in men 25-54, 11.5/50 in men 18-49 and 8.7/51 in men 18-34 from 8:25-11:28 PM.

CBS NEWS’ “FACE THE NATION” IS #1 IN TOTAL VIEWERS ON SUNDAY, JAN. 5
Face The Nation” Is the Only Sunday Morning News Program to Add Viewers Year-to-Year
CBS News’ FACE THE NATION was #1 in total viewers among the Sunday morning public affairs shows on Sunday, Jan. 5, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings. FACE THE NATION scored 3.570 million viewers, its largest audience this season, and delivered 730,000 in adults 25-54, the demographic most important to those who advertise in news.
FACE THE NATION was the only Sunday morning news program to add viewers year-to-year (+2%, from 3.51m) while competitors declined (NBC -12% and ABC -3%).
The Jan. 5 broadcast featured Margaret Brennan’s interviews with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), retired Gen. David Petraeus and Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez.
Additionally, FACE THE NATION released a new CBS News Battleground Tracker poll showing presidential candidate Bernie Sanders gaining ground, moving atop the Democratic field in Iowa and New Hampshire.

CBS SUNDAY MORNING, America’s #1 Sunday morning news program, posted audience gains year-to-year, according to Nielsen live plus same day ratings for Sunday, Jan. 5.
The broadcast, anchored by Jane Pauley, delivered 5.804 million viewers and 1.202 million in the adults 25-54 category. CBS SUNDAY MORNING was #1 for the 574th consecutive week in viewers and #1 for the 170th consecutive week with adults 25-54, the demographic most desired by those who advertise in news.
CBS SUNDAY MORNING was up +3% in viewers compared to the same week a year ago.
Sunday’s broadcast included Rita Braver’s cover story on the popularity of DNA tests and what can happen when the results reveal unexpected family secrets. Serena Altschul went backstage on Broadway to talk to with singer-songwriter David Byrne about his show “American Utopia.” Ben Tracy traveled to a unique resort in Cambodia to talk with architect Bill Bensley, who creates exotic retreats throughout the world.
Also on the broadcast, Bob Schieffer caught up with country music’s Tanya Tucker. Conor Knighton reported from a “tablescaping” competition where competitors design and decorate elaborate tabletops. National Geographic photographer Joel Sartore offered his thoughts on endangered species and what people can do to help. Holly Williams, Seth Doane and David Martin reported on the latest in the escalating tension between Iran and the United States. And Steve Hartman told the tale of a cat sanctuary worker who became an unlikely savior.
