ABC’s “American Housewife” emerged as Friday’s No. 1 show in Adults 18-49 in the L+3 numbers, leapfrogging over Fox’s “WWE Friday Night Smackdown” to lead by 1-tenth of a rating point (0.9/5 vs. 0.8/5) after trailing by 1-tenth in L+SD. In fact, “American Housewife” outdelivered “WWE Smackdown” in 3 of their last 4 original head-to-head matchups in Adults 18-49. The ABC sitcom grew week to week by 13% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/5 vs. 0.8/5) and held even with the prior week in Total Viewers (4.3 million).

ABC News’ “Nightline” averaged 1.048 million Total Viewers, 350,000 Adults 25-54 and 245,000 Adults 18-49 during the week of Jan. 20, 2020, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” beat leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (315,000 and 210,000, respectively) in both Adults 25-54 (+35,000) and Adults 18-49 (+35,000) for the 5th consecutive week.  

“Nightline” narrowed its margins year to year with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in Adults 25-54 (-15% – 23,000 vs. 27,000) and Adults 18-49 (-14% – 19,000 vs. 22,000).

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+20,000 – 385,000 vs. 365,000) and Adults 18-49 (+11,000 – 275,000 vs. 264,000), leading the CBS program in both key Adult demos in all 5 seasons that the two programs have aired in their respective time periods – since the 2015-2016 season.

In addition, “Nightline” is cutting its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” by double digits for the 3rd season in a row in both Adults 25-54 (-30% – 63,000 vs. 90,000) and Adults 18-49 (-35% – 46,000 vs. 71,000), posting its closest-ever Adults 18-49 performance in the 6 seasons the two shows have aired in their respective time slots—since the 2014-2015 season.

Stories reported on “Nightline” last week included thousands of gun rights activists in Richmond, Virginia, protesting the state’s proposed gun control laws; an interview with Jane Fonda on changing her lifestyle to combat climate change; the latest in the Harvey Weinstein trial; the sentencing of a drug company executive for his role in a scheme that contributed to the opioid crisis; and a first-hand look at how “Lion King” on Broadway is making a big impact in a South African village.

NOTE: On Monday (1/20/20), CBS’ “The Late Late Show” was retitled to “The Late Lt Show-J. Corden-MLK.”  In addition, on Friday (1/24/20), repeat telecast of CBS “The Late Late Show” was retitled to “The Late Late Show-JC.”  The telecasts are not be included in the weekly averages.  CBS’ weekly averages are based on four days (Tuesday-Thursday).

ABC Thursday Prime Time (8:00-11:00 p.m. – 8.7 million and 1.8/10 in AD18-49):
Featuring the return of its drama lineup and a two-hour crossover event between “Station 19” and “Grey’s Anatomy” from 8:00-10:00 p.m., ABC scored a new Thursday season high among Adults 18-49 (1.8/10) and delivered its highest-rated Thursday with entertainment programming since February 2019– since 2/28/19. ABC stood as Thursday’s No. 1 networkin Adults 18-49, dominating its nearest competition by 80% (Fox = 1.0/5) and ranking No. 1 in all 6 half-hours of the night. ABC claimed the night’s Top 3 shows in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 with “Grey’s Anatomy,” the season premiere of “Station 19” and “A Million Little Things,” respectively.

  • Driven by the night’s Top 3 biggest gainers in TV playback among Adults 18-49, ABC further distanced itself from the No. 2 network in the L+3 numbers, increasing its advantage to 8-tenths of a rating point (1.8/10 vs. 1.0/5 for Fox) compared to a 5-tenths lead in L+SD.



“Station 19” (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 9.3 million and 1.8/9 in AD18-49):
Moving to the 8:00 p.m. hour in its third season, the premiere of ABC’s “Station 19” marked the series’ most-watched telecast ever(9.3 million). “Station 19” improved over its second season premiere (on 10/4/18) by 33% in Total Viewers (9.3 million vs. 7.0 million) and by 13% among Adults 18-49 (1.8/9 vs. 1.6/6). The ABC drama stood as Thursday’s No. 2 show in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, behind only “Grey’s Anatomy.”

  • On its first telecast since May 2019, ABC’s “Station 19” scored its biggest L+3 lift in Total Viewers (+2.32 million) since its series debut in March 2018 (since 3/22/18).



“Grey’s Anatomy” (9:00-10:01 p.m. – 9.6 million and 2.3/11 in AD18-49):
Shifting to the 9:00 p.m. hour on its midseason return, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” improved over its winter finale (on 11/21/19) by 9% in Total Viewers (9.6 million vs. 8.8 million) to draw its biggest audience since March 2019 (since 3/28/19) and by 5% with Adults 18-49 (2.3/11 vs. 2.2/11) to match its highest-rated telecast this season. “Grey’s Anatomy” ranked as the No. 1 show of the nightin both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.

  • On its first telecast since November, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” delivered its largest L+3 increase in Total Viewers (+2.93 million) since September 2018 (since 9/27/18) and tied its biggest of the season among Adults 18-49 (+0.9 rating points). “Grey’s Anatomy” stood as the night’s No. 1 gainer in TV playback in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.



“A Million Little Things” (10:01-11:00 p.m. – 7.0 million and 1.4/8 in AD18-49):
On its first telecast since November, ABC’s “A Million Little Things” emerged as Thursday’s No. 3 program in the L+3 numbers in both Total Viewers (7.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.4/8), moving up from No. 5 and No. 4, respectively, in L+SD. In its new 10:00 p.m. time slot, “AMLT” delivered ABC’s best performance in the hour this season in Viewers and Adults 18-49.

  • Returning with its first telecast since November and moving to a new time period, “A Million Little Things” posted its largest playback lift this season from L+SD to L+3 in Total Viewers (+2.80 million) and doubled its Adult 18-49 rating (+100%) after 3 days of TV playback. “AMLT” ranked as Thursday’s No. 2 playback gainer in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, behind only “Grey’s Anatomy.”

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” stood as the evening’s No. 1 newscast for the 6th week in a row in all key target demos: Total Viewers (9.101 million), Adults 25-54 (1.745 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.187 million) for the week of Jan. 20, 2020, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (7.907 million, 1.654 million and 1.162 million, respectively) by 1.194 million Total Viewers, 91,000 Adults 25-54 and 25,000 Adults 18-49.  In fact, “World News Tonight” outdelivered “NBC Nightly News” head-to-head on each of the five nights of the week by more than 1.0 million viewers for the first time in nearly 24 years – since w/o 4/15/96, based on regular telecasts. “World News Tonight” has led “NBC Nightly News” by more than 1.1 million viewers for the past three weeks.



On Monday, Jan. 20, and Tuesday, Jan. 21, anchor David Muir anchored from Washington, D.C., to report on the Senate impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.



“World News Tonight” posted its largest overall viewer win over the NBC program in 5 months – since w/o 8/12/19.  “World News Tonight” substantially increased its Total Viewer advantage year to year (+65%; vs. 724,000), winning all 18 weeks of the season and the last 61 weeks overall.  In addition, “World News Tonight”’s 6th consecutive win in Adults 25-54 represents its longest run in more than 5 years – since week of 9/22/14 through week of 10/27/14.



Season to date, “World News Tonight” (8.766 million) ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers at this point of the season for the 3rd consecutive year, based on Most Current DataIn fact, “World News Tonight” is more than doubling its lead over “NBC Nightly News” (7.964 million) from last season (+104% – 802,000 vs. 394,000) to its largest season lead in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season. “World News Tonight” is beating “CBS Evening News” (5.636 million) by 3.130 million, posting its biggest Total Viewer season advantage in at least 28 years (since at least the start of Nielsen electronic database in the 1991-1992 season).



In addition, “World News Tonight” is No. 1 for the season in Adults 25-54, leading NBC by its largest news demo margin (+30,000 – 1.711 million vs. 1.681 million) in 24 years and taking the top spot for the first time at this point of a season in 12 years—since the 1995-1996 and the 2007-2008 seasons, respectively. “World News Tonight” is also slashing its season margin with NBC in Adults 18-49 (-77% – 14,000 vs. 60,000), seeing its closest gap in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season.



“World News Tonight” is No. 1 in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 season to date for the first time in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season.



For the week, “World News Tonight” (9.101 million, 1.745 million and 1.187 million, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (5.912 million, 1.078 million and 785,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+3.189 million), Adults 25-54 (+667,000) and Adults 18-49 (+402,000).

With “The Bachelor” and “The Good Doctor,” ABC won Monday night in Adults 18-49 (2.1/10), ranking as the No. 1 broadcast network for the 3rd straight week and dominating its nearest competition on the night by 62% (1.3/6 for NBC). ABC claimed Monday’s Top 2 shows in Adults 18-49 with “The Bachelor” and “The Good Doctor,” respectively.

“The Bachelor” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 7.6 million and 2.4/11 in AD18-49):
ABC’s “The Bachelor” grew over the prior week by 10% in Total Viewers (7.6 million vs. 6.9 million) to draw its biggest audience so far this season and by 9% among Adults 18-49 (2.4/11 vs. 2.2/9) to match its premiere at a season high. In addition, “The Bachelor” improved over its year-ago telecast (7.2 million and 2.1/8 on 1/21/19) in both Viewers (+6%) and Adults 18-49 (+14%). In fact, on average through its first 3 telecasts this season, ABC’s “The Bachelor” is up year over year by 9% in Total Viewers and by 14% in Adults 18-49. “The Bachelor” solidified its rank as Monday’s No. 1 show in Adults 18-49 (2.4/11), standing as the night’s highest-rated series for the 3rd consecutive week.

“The Good Doctor” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 9.2 million and 1.6/8 in AD18-49):
ABC’s “The Good Doctor” emerged as Monday’s No. 2 show and as the night’s No. 1 scripted show in Adults 18-49 in the L+3 numbers (1.6/8), moving ahead of Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star” (1.4/6) and NBC’s “AGT: The Champions” (1.3/6) after standing behind both shows in L+SD. “The Good Doctor” grew week to week in both Total Viewers (+1%) and Adults 18-49 (+7%).

  • ABC’s “The Good Doctor” stood as Monday’s No. 1 gainer in TV playback in Total Viewers (+3.75 million) and Adults 18-49 (+0.7 rating points), topping the L+3 gains of NBC’s “Manifest” (+3.21 million and +0.6 rating points).

For the First Time in 24 Years, ‘World News Tonight’ Is the No. 1 Newscast in Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 Season to Date – Delivering Largest Lead in Both Measures in Decades



ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” stood as the No. 1 evening newscast for the 5th consecutive week in all key target demos: Total Viewers (9.277 million), Adults 25-54 (1.865 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.256 million) for the week of Jan. 13, 2020, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” outdelivered “NBC Nightly News” (8.084 million, 1.655 million and 1.171 million, respectively) by 1.193 million Total Viewers, 210,000 Adults 25-54 and 85,000 Adults 18-49. In fact, “World News Tonight” turned in its largest overall viewer win over the NBC program in 5 months – since w/o 8/12/19. “World News Tonight” also increased its Total Viewer advantage year to year (+26%; vs. 945,000), winning all 17 weeks of the season and the last 60 weeks overall.



In addition, “World News Tonight”’s run of 5 consecutive Adults 25-54 weekly wins represents its longest in nearly 5 years – since week of 3/9/15 through week of 4/6/15. Further, “World News Tonight” beat “CBS Evening News” and “NBC Nightly News” on each of the five nights of the week in the key adult news demo for the first time in over 4½ years – since w/o 4/20/15, based on regular telecasts.



On Monday (1/13/20), “World News Tonight” saw its largest single-day telecast win over “NBC Nightly News” in over 11 years in Total Viewers (+1.658 million – 9.824 million vs. 8.166 million) and over 5 years in Adults 25-54 (+527,000 – 2.113 million vs. 1.586 million) – since 9/11/08 and 10/10/14, respectively, based on regular telecasts.  



On Tuesday (1/14/20), “World News Tonight” delivered its largest single-date win over “CBS Evening News” in Total Viewers (+3.864 million – 9.669 million vs. 5.805 million) and Adults 25-54 (+1.063 million – 2.086 million vs. 1.023 million) in 11 years – since 9/11/08 and 1/20/09, respectively, based on regular telecasts.  



Season to date, “World News Tonight” (8.742 million) ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers at this point of the season for the 3rd consecutive year, based on Most Current DataIn fact, “World News Tonight” is more than doubling its lead over “NBC Nightly News” (7.965 million) from last season (+109% – 777,000 vs. 371,000) to its largest season lead in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season. “World News Tonight” is beating “CBS Evening News” (5.617 million) by 3.125 million, posting its biggest Total Viewer season advantage in at least 28 years (since at least the start of Nielsen electronic database in the 1991-1992 season).



In addition, “World News Tonight” is No. 1 for the season in Adults 25-54, leading NBC by its largest news demo margin (+27,000 – 1.709 million vs. 1.682 million) in 24 years and taking the top spot for the first time at this point of a season in 12 years—since the 1995-1996 and the 2007-2008 seasons, respectively. “World News Tonight” is also slashing its season margin with NBC in Adults 18-49 (-75% – 16,000 vs. 64,000), seeing its closest gap in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season.

        

“World News Tonight” is No. 1 in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 season to date for the first time in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season.



For the week, “World News Tonight” (9.277 million, 1.865 million and 1.256 million, respectively) defeated “CBS Evening News” (5.882 million, 1.083 million and 793,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+3.395 million), Adults 25-54 (+782,000) and Adults 18-49 (+463,000).

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (1.168 million), Adults 25-54 (394,000) and Adults 18-49 (285,000-tied) during the week of Jan. 6, 2020, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” led NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (1.145 million and 392,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+23,000) and Adults 25-54 (+2,000).



“Nightline” posted double-digit increases week to week (980,000, 320,000 and 230,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+19%), Adults 25-54 (+23%) and Adults 18-49 (+24%), posting its strongest numbers in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 since November and best Adults 25-54 performance since October–since weeks of 11/11/19 and 10/21/19, respectively.



Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+21,000 – 388,000 vs. 367,000) and Adults 18-49 (+9,000 – 277,000 vs. 268,000).



In addition, “Nightline” is cutting its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” by double digits for the 3rd season in a row in both Adults 25-54 (-32% – 65,000 vs. 96,000) and Adults 18-49 (-36% – 48,000 vs. 75,000), posting its closest-ever Adults 18-49 performance in the 6 seasons the two shows have aired in their respective time slots—since the 2014-2015 season.



Stories reported on “Nightline” last week included the breaking news of Iran launching 15 ballistic missiles at two military bases in Iraq that house American troops, the deadly wildfires in Australia, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan announcing they will step away from royal duties and an interview with “Just Mercy” stars and the real-life attorney who exonerated death row inmates.



NOTE: For the week, CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” was retitled to “The Late Late Show-JC-ENC” due to being encore telecasts. The retitled telecasts will not be included in the season averages.

The Greatest of All Time,” ABC ranked No. 1 on Thursday in both Total Viewers (10.3 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.7/9), dominating its nearest competitors by 3.5 million viewers (6.8 million for CBS) and by 55% among Adults 18-49 (1.1/6 for Fox). “JEOPARDY! The Greatest of All Time” stood as the No. 1 program of the night in Total Viewers (17.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.5/13), giving ABC its fourth consecutive win this week in the latter Nielsen measure.

ABC’s “JEOPARDY!” ranked as Thursday’s dominant No. 1 program in Total Viewers (17.0 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.5/13), standing as the top program for the 3rd night in a row. In fact, “JEOPARDY! GOAT” overshadowed its Thursday competition, towering over the night’s No. 2 show (CBS’ “Young Sheldon”) by 7.0 million viewers (17.0 million vs. 10.0 million) and by more than a full Adult 18-49 rating point (2.5/13 vs. 1.4/8).

Drawing 17.0 million viewers, night 3 of ABC’s “JEOPARDY! GOAT” ranked No. 2 among all non-sports telecasts so far this season in Total Viewers, behind only NBC’s “The Golden Globes® Awards.” “JEOPARDY!” stood as the No. 1 entertainment Thursday telecast of the season in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.

The Greatest of All Time” leading into the first original telecasts in 4 weeks of “Modern Family,” “Single Parents” and “Stumptown,” ABC won Wednesday night in Adults 18-49, topping runner-up NBC by 6% (1.8/9 vs. 1.7/9). ABC claimed Wednesday’s Top 2 highest-rated programs in Adults 18-49, with night 2 of “JEOPARDY!” and “Modern Family,” respectively. In fact, ABC ranked No. 1 and claimed the No. 1 program for the 3rd straight night among Adults 18-49.



“JEOPARDY! The Greatest of All Time”: Night 2 (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 16.5 million and 2.7/13 in AD18-49):

Night 2 of “JEOPARDY! The Greatest of All Time” grew over the prior night to average 16.5 million viewers (+2% vs. 16.1 million). On its second night, “JEOPARDY!” held exactly even with night 1 among Adults 18-49 (2.7/13). “JEOPARDY! GOAT” stood as Wednesday’s dominant No. 1 program in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49. In fact, ABC’s “JEOPARDY!” outdrew its nearest competition on the night (NBC’s “Chicago Fire”) by 5.5 million Total Viewers (16.5 million vs. 11.0 million).



With 16.5 million viewers, night 2 of ABC’s “JEOPARDY! GOAT” stood as the No. 2 non-sports telecast so far this season in Total Viewers, behind NBC’s “The Golden Globes® Awards.” Excluding only the deciding game of Fox’s “2019 World Series,” “JEOPARDY! The Greatest of All Time” ranked as the most-watched Wednesday telecast of the season, drawing a larger audience than every telecast of Fox’s “The Masked Singer.”

ABC’s “Modern Family” returned with a 2-year high in Total Viewers (8.2 million) and a 1-year high among Adults 18-49 (2.1/10) – since 1/17/18 and 1/23/19, respectively. Modern Family” ranked as the No. 2 program of the night in Adults 18-49, behind only ABC’s “JEOPARDY!”



“Single Parents” (9:31-10:00 p.m. – 4.6 million and 1.2/6 in AD18-49):

On its first original of the year, ABC’s “Single Parents” drew its largest overall audience (4.6 million) since December 2018 and scored its highest-rated telecast in Adults 18-49 (1.2/6) since January 2019 – 12/12/18 and 1/30/19, respectively.

The Greatest of All Time” leading into the returns of “mixed-ish,” “black-ish” and “Emergence,” ABC ranked No. 1 on Tuesday night in Adults 18-49, beating runner-up CBS by 15% (1.5/7 vs. 1.3/6). In fact, ABC won its 2nd night in a row among Adults 18-49, with “The Bachelor” premiere giving the Net the win on Monday.



“JEOPARDY! The Greatest of All Time”: Night 1 (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 16.1 million and 2.7/13 in AD18-49):

Night 1 of “JEOPARDY! The Greatest of All Time” averaged 16.1 million Total Viewers and 2.7/13 among Adults 18-49 after 3 days of TV playback. JEOPARDY! GOAT” easily ranked as Tuesday’s No. 1 program, towering over its nearest competition (CBS’ “NCIS”) in Total Viewers by 3.0 million viewers (16.1 million vs. 13.1 million) and in Adults 18-49 by 93% (2.7/13 vs. 1.4/7).



Night 1 of ABC’s “JEOPARDY! GOAT” ranked No. 2 among all non-sports telecasts so far this season in Total Viewers, behind only NBC’s “The Golden Globes® Awards.” Excluding only Game 6 of Fox’s “2019 World Series,” “JEOPARDY! On its first telecast of the year, ABC’s “mixed-ish” returned with a series high in Total Viewers, growing over its most recent telecast by 44% (5.3 million vs. 3.7 million) and hit a best-since-premiere rating among Adults 18-49 (since 9/24/19), improving over its last telecast by 50% (1.2/6 vs. 0.8/4).



“black-ish” (9:30-10:00 p.m. – 4.0 million and 1.0/5 in AD18-49):

Returning for its first telecast of 2020, ABC’s “black-ish” was up over its most recent telecast by 5% in Total Viewers (4.0 million vs. 3.8 million) to draw its biggest audience in 3 months and shot up by 25% among Adults 18-49 (1.0/5 vs. 0.8/4) to match its highest-rated telecast since its season premiere – since 9/24/19.

Featuring the 3-hour season premiere of “The Bachelor,” ABC scored a new Monday season high among Adults 18-49 (2.4/12) and delivered its highest-rated Monday with entertainment programming since March 2019 – 3/11/19. ABC ranked as Monday’s No. 1 network in Adults 18-49, dominating NBC’s night of premieres by 50% (1.6/8 for “AGT: The Champions” and “Manifest”) and winning its first Monday this season.



·       ABC’s “The Bachelor” grew over last season’s premiere by double digits in Total Viewers (+15% – 7.5 million vs. 6.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (+20% – 2.4/12 vs. 2.0/7) to score its strongest premiere in 3 years – since its January 2017 premiere (on 1/2/17).



·       “The Bachelor” opened as Monday’s dominant No. 1 program in Adults 18-49 (2.4/12), towering over runners-up NBC’s “AGT: The Champions” premiere (1.6/8) and “Manifest” premiere (1.6/9) by 50% each.



·       “The Bachelor” grew by +0.5 ratings points among Adults 18-49 from L+SD to L+3 and picked up additional +1.1 rating points in digital playback, jumping to a 3.5 rating after 3 days of delayed viewing on linear and digital platforms – an increase of +84% over its initial L+SD rating (3.5 rating vs. 1.9 rating).
