August 1, 2017 – In a rare, in-depth interview featured in a new “Dateline NBC” special this Friday, Charles Manson’s former parole officer Roger Smith tells Dateline NBC’s Keith Morrison that Manson’s failed music career drove him to find new ways to control his followers. Smith explained, “Charlie was in serious danger of losing ‘The Family.’ He did something that, you know, politicians are masterful at, and that is he creates this horrible thing out there. That there's going to be a race war.” He added, “I think it was basically used to keep them focused and maybe even divert attention from the fact that he was not doing well in terms of realizing his dream.” To watch the preview, click here. The interview is part of a new, one-hour Dateline, “The Summer of Manson," which airs Friday, August 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT, 9 p.m. CT.

Friday’s special also includes an interview with Eric Carlson, a “Manson Family” confidant, who opens up for the first time on national television. According to Carlson, Manson and “his family” wanted to spring one of their friends from jail, and got the idea to kill actress Sharon Tate from watching an old movie on TV. Carlson told Morrison, “ [The Manson Family] were watching some old, James Cagney movie where he's in jail for these murders and they do these copycat murders to prove that he's not the one.” To watch the exchange, click here. April 18, 2017 – In newly unearthed interrogation video of convicted murdered Scott Peterson, featured in a new two-hour “Dateline NBC” this Friday, Peterson denied knowing where his wife Laci was hours after he first reported her missing. Retired Detective Allen Brocchini of the Modesto Police Department tells Keith Morrison that Peterson’s answers during that interrogation raised suspicions, particularly his story about coming home the day of Laci’s disappearance. Friday’s special also includes prosecutor Birgit Fladager speaking about the case for the first time on national television. Fladager spoke to Morrison about Peterson’s motive in killing Laci and their unborn child Conner, saying: “he doesn't care about anyone but himself, he can be very smooth. The broadcast will feature a comprehensive look at the case, which Dateline has reported on for more than a decade, including interviews with key players such as: Amber Frey, Laci’s mother Sharon Rocha, Laci’s friends Stacey Boyers, Lori Ellsworth and Rene Tomlinson, retired Detective Jon Buehler, retired journalist Richard Cole and attorney Gloria Allred.

Peterson was convicted in 2004 of the murder of his wife Laci and their unborn baby. The story made worldwide headlines after Laci disappeared on Christmas Eve.

April 4, 2017 – In his first network television interview since pleading guilty to manslaughter in the death of his wife Kathleen, Michael Peterson tells “Dateline NBC” correspondent Dennis Murphy that accepting a plea deal was, “the most difficult decision I ever made in my life.” To watch the exchange, click here. Kathleen’s sister Candace Zamperini reacted to the plea, telling Dateline, “We weren’t quitting until we heard the word guilty. We thought we were going to hear it from another 12 jurors but we got to hear Michael say guilty.” To watch the preview, click here. In 2003, Peterson was originally convicted of first degree murder after Kathleen was found dead at the bottom of their staircase. The trial made national headlines as prosecutors tried to link Peterson to the death of a family friend who was also found dead at the bottom of a staircase. Peterson spent eight years in prison until his conviction was overturned. He was granted a new trial after a judge ruled that he had not received a fair trial. In February, Peterson entered an Alford plea – pleading guilty to manslaughter but maintaining his innocence – before a new trial was set to begin. He was sentenced to time already served.

“Down the Back Staircase ” also features interviews with key players in the case, including: Peterson’s daughters Martha Ratliff and Margaret Ratliff, Peterson’s brother Bill Peterson, Detective Art Holland, former Assistant District Attorney Freda Black, Peterson’s defense attorney David Rudolf and Kathleen’s daughter Caitlin Atwater. Murphy has reported on this case for more than a decade.

MICHAEL PETERSON: Yeah. Absolutely. And I'm talking, you know, joining the marines, anything I did in my life, this was the most difficult decision I made. And I did it because the second most difficult thing I ever did in my life was to live through that trial and listen to all of those lies and perjuries, the nonsense.
