1995 - Westinghouse Electric Corporation made a deal to buy CBS for $5.4 billion.

1987 - Mary Hart, of "Entertainment Tonight", had her legs insured by Lloyd’s of London for $2 million.

1998 - Janet Jackson was a guest on the "Late Show With David Letterman."

2000 - NBC announced that they had found nearly all of Milton Berle's kinescopes. The filmed recordings of Berle's early TV shows had been the subject of a $30 million lawsuit filed by Berle the previous May.

1989 - Mel Blanc, the "man of a thousand voices," died at age 81. He was known for such cartoon characters as Daffy Duck, Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig.

2003 - PBS' Soundstage returned to TV with a performance from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The show had not aired in over 18 years when it ran from 1974 to 1985.

1993 - Michael Jackson granted his first interview in 15 years to Oprah Winfrey. In the interview, Jackson claimed that he has a disorder that destroys the pigmentation of the skin and that he had had very little plastic surgery.

2015 - NBC News suspended Brian Williams for six months without pay for his misrepresenting of events concerning an Iraq war story. The story was found to be untrue.

1994 - The 100th episode of "Beverly Hills 90210" was aired on FOX.

1997 - "The Simpsons" became the longest-running prime-time animated series. "The Flintstones record previously.

1998 - Oprah Winfrey announced that Garth Brooks had agreed to donate his earnings from sales from his album "Sevens" for a seven-day period. The money went to "Oprah's Angel Network."

2010 - Ellen DeGeneres made her debut as a judge on "American Idol."

1993 - General Motors sued NBC, alleging that "Dateline NBC" had rigged two car-truck crashes to show that some GM pickups were prone to fires after certain types of crashes. The suit was settled the following day by NBC.

1993 - Tom Jones guest starred on NBC-TV's "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air."

1996 - The U.S. Telecommunications Bill was signed into law. The bill included provisions that required TV manufacturers to install V-chip devices in all television sets with a 13 inch screen or larger. The chips would allow consumers to block "sexual, violent, and other material about which parents should be informed before it is displayed to children".

2006 - Kelly Clarkson became the first participant on "American Idol" to win a Grammy. The awards were for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for "Since U Been Gone" and Best Pop Vocal Album for "Breakaway". She also performed "Because of You" at the show.

2010 - MTV dropped the "Music Television" moniker from its logo.

1987 - The New York Giants defeated the Denver Broncos, 39-20, in Super Bowl XXI on NBC. The game featured TV commercials costing $550,000 for 30 seconds.

1990 - Paul McCartney (Beatles) was profiled on CBS-TV's "48 Hours".

1990 - Bill Medley (Righteous Brothers) appeared on NBC-TV's "Cheers."

1995 - The 100th episode of "L.A. Law" aired.

1947 - KTLA, Channel 5, in Hollywood, CA, began operation as the first commercial television station west of the Mississippi River.

1968 - "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In", debuted on NBC TV.

1973 - Joe Frazier lost the first fight of his professional career to George Foreman. He had been the undefeated heavyweight world champion since February 16, 1970 when he knocked out Jimmy Ellis. The event was HBO's first televised boxing match.

1987 - Phil Donahue became the first talk show host to tape a show from inside the Soviet Union. The shows were shown later in the year.

1990 - Guns 'N' Roses guitarist Slash used profanity numerous times on live television while accepting an American Music Award.

2002 - Pat Summerall announced that he would leave his NFL broadcasting partner, John Madden, after they called the Super Bowl for Fox Sports. The two had worked together for 21 years.

2010 - Conan O'Brien's hosted his last episode of "The Tonight Show."

2002 - Ethan Zohn was announced as the winner of CBS' "Survivor 3."

2005 - CBS fired four executives following the release of an independent investigation about a "60 Minutes Wednesday" story about U.S. President George W. Bush's military service. The investigation said a "myopic zeal" led to the story being aired that was neither fair nor accurate. Forged documents had been used for proof in the story.

2007 - The iTunes Music Store reached 50 million television episodes sold.
