Returning from the prior week’s pre-emption and airing opposite the start of the World Series on Fox, ABC’s “The Conners” grew over its last telecast two weeks ago by 9% in Total Viewers (6.0 million vs. 5.5 million) to draw its largest overall audience so far this season and by 9% among Adults 18-49 (1.2/6 vs. 1.1/5) to match a best-since-premiere rating – since 9/24/19. The Conners” tied NBC’s “The Voice” as the No. 1 entertainment series in the 8:00 p.m. half-hour among Adults 18-49

“Bless This Mess” (8:30-9:00 p.m. – 3.8 million and 0.8/3 in AD18-49):
Returning from its week-earlier pre-emption and airing against the World Series for the first time, ABC’s “Bless This Mess” built over its most-recent telecast two weeks ago by double digits in Total Viewers (+12% – 3.8 million vs. 3.4 million) and Adults 18-49 (+14% – 0.8/3 vs. 0.7/3), tying a season high in the latter Nielsen measure.

“mixed-ish” (9:00-9:30 p.m. – 3.1 million and 0.7/3 in AD18-49):
Despite airing against the World Series for the 2nd straight week, ABC’s “mixed-ish” grew its overall audience for the 2nd week in a row (+3% – 3.1 million vs. 3.0 million) and held even week to week among Adults 18-49 (0.7/3).

“black-ish” (9:30-10:00 p.m. – 3.0 million and 0.8/3 in AD18-49):
Also airing opposite the World Series for the 2nd consecutive week, ABC’s “black-ish” grew week to week by double digits in Total Viewers (+11% – 3.0 million vs. 2.7 million) to deliver its most-watched episode in 3 weeks and in Adults 18-49 (+14% – 0.8/3 vs. 0.7/3) to score its highest-rated episode since its season premiere – since 10/8/19 and 9/24/19, respectively. In fact, “black-ish” was the only broadcast series on Tuesday to grow over the prior week opposite Game 6 of the World Series among Adults 18-49 (+14%).

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Total Viewers (1.241 million), Adults 25-54 (434,000), and Adults 18-49 (298,000) for the 2nd week in a row during the week of Oct. 21, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. 

“Nightline” outdelivered NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (1.088 million, 351,000 and 276,000, respectively) in Total Viewers (+153,000), Adults 25-54 (+83,000) and Adults 18-49 (+22,000). “Nightline” turned in its largest advantages in Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 in over 4 months – since w/o 6/10/19, based on original telecasts.

“Nightline” beat CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (1.162 million, 350,000 and 262,000, respectively) by 79,000 Total Viewers, 84,000 Adults 25-54 and 36,000 Adults 18-49.

For the 2nd consecutive week, “Nightline” turned in week-to-week increases (1.175 million, 390,000 and 286,000, respectively, for w/o 10/14/19) across the board: Total Viewers (+6%), Adults 25-54 (+11%) and Adults 18-49 (+4%), turning in its largest overall audience and best news demo performance in more than 4 months – since weeks of 6/3/19 and 6/10/19, respectively

“Nightline” improved on the year-ago week (1.197 million and 425,000, respectively, w/o 10/22/18) in Total Viewers (+4%) and Adults 25-54 (+2%).

“Nightline’s” Total Viewer performance on Monday (1.341 million on 10/21/19) and Adults 25-54 delivery on Thursday (479,000 on 10/24/19) each stand as the ABC program’s strongest single-day telecast in each measure in over 4 months – since 6/13/19.

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+54,000 – 409,000 vs. 355,000) and Adults 18-49 (+39,000 – 294,000 vs. 255,000).

Stories reported on “Nightline last week included an investigation into Chechnya’s reported torture of its LGBT community, a former alt-right group member speaking out in her first television interview, an exclusive interview with Cameron Douglas, a look at actor Nico Tortorella’s untraditional marriage, how author Anna Todd built an erotica empire from One Direction fan fiction, and Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan getting candid about their struggles as newlyweds and new parents in the public eye.

‘World News Tonight’ Leads NBC by 541,000 Viewers and CBS by Nearly 3 Million for the Week

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” stood as the evening’s No. 1 newscast in Total Viewers (8.244 million) and Adults 25-54 (1.627 million) for the week of Oct. 21, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” outdelivered “NBC Nightly News” (7.703 million and 1.620 million, respectively) by 541,000 Total Viewers and 7,000 Adults 25-54. In fact, “World News Tonight” has won all 5 weeks of the season in Total Viewers and 4 of the 5 weeks in Adults 25-54.

“World News Tonight” more than doubled its Total Viewer victory over the NBC program year to year (+182%; vs. 192,000 for w/o 10/22/18).

For the 2nd week in a row, “World News Tonight” improved week to week in Total Viewers (+17,000 – 8.244 million vs. 8.227 million) and Adults 25-54 (+4,000 – 1.627 million vs. 1.623 million), posting its best news demo performance in nearly 5 months—since w/o 4/29/19.

“World News Tonight” slashed its Adults 18-49 margin with “NBC Nightly News” year to year nearly in half (-47% – 36,000 vs. 68,000).

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (8.218 million) ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers at this point of the season for the 4th consecutive year. In fact, “World News Tonight” is increasing its lead over “NBC Nightly News” (7.475 million) from last season by 78% (743,000 vs. 418,000) to its largest season lead in 23 years—since the 1996-1997 season. “World News Tonight” leads “CBS Evening News” (5.188 million) by 3.030 million, posting its biggest Total Viewer season advantage in at least 28 years (since at least the start of Nielsen electronic database in 1991-1992 season).

In addition, “World News Tonight” is No. 1 for the season in Adults 25-54, leading NBC by 13,000 news demo viewers (1.599 million vs. 1.586 million) and taking the top spot for the first time at this point of a season in 5 years—since the 2014-15 season. “World News Tonight” is also slashing its season margin with NBC in Adults 18-49 (-76% – 26,000 vs. 110,000), seeing its closest gap in 12 years—since the 2007-2008 season.

“World News Tonight” is No. 1 in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 season to date for the first time in 12 years—since the 2007-08 season.

For the week, “World News Tonight” (8.244 million, 1.627 million and 1.103 million, respectively) defeated “CBS Evening News” (5.264 million, 943,000 and 696,000, respectively) by 2.980 million Total Viewers, by 684,000 Adults 25-54 and 407,000 Adults 18-49.

In fact, “20/20” beat “Dateline” in all three measures for the first time this season. Further, “20/20” beat the NBC newsmagazine by its largest margins in both key adult demos in over 6 months – since 4/5/19.

With its 3-hour drama line-up, ABC ranked as the No. 1 non-sports network in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4), dominating CBS by 29% (0.7/4) and NBC by 50% (0.6/3). Improving over the prior week by 13% with Adults 18-49 (as all three ABC series grew week to week), ABC stood as the only broadcaster to post weekly growth.

“Grey’s Anatomy” (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 6.1 million and 1.3/6 in AD18-49):
ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” stood as Thursday’s No. 1 entertainment program among Adults 18-49 (1.3/6), ranking as the night’s top non-sports program for the 5th time in 5 weeks. “Grey’s Anatomy” grew over the previous week in both Total Viewers (+7% – 6.1 million vs. 5.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (+8% – 1.3/6 vs. 1.2/6).

  • On average, during the first 3 weeks of the season, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” is Thursday’s No. 1 gainer in TV playback (and No. 2 for the season overall) among Adults 18-49 with a lift of +1.1 rating points from L+SD to L+7.



“A Million Little Things” (9:00-10:00 p.m. – 4.4 million and 0.9/4 in AD18-49):
ABC’s “A Million Little Things” shot up over the prior week by 29% among Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 0.7/3) to score its highest-rated telecast since its season opener and grew by 10% in Total Viewers (4.4 million vs. 4.0 million) to draw its largest audience in 3 weeks—since 9/26/19 and 10/3/19, respectively. In addition, “AMLT” improved by double digits over its comparable year-ago telecast (3.5 million and 0.8/4 on 10/24/18) in both Total Viewers (+26%) and Adults 18-49 (+13%). ABC’s “A Million Little Things” ranked as the No. 1 non-sports program in the hour with Adults 18-49 (0.9/4), topping CBS’ comedies by 13% (0.8/3) and NBC’s comedies including the premiere of “Will & Grace” by 50% (0.6/3).

  • Through its first 3 telecasts of the season, ABC’s “A Million Little Things” grows by nearly a full ratings point from L+SD to L+7 (+0.9 rating points) to stand as Thursday’s No. 2 playback gainer with Adults 18-49, behind only “Grey’s Anatomy.”



“How to Get Away with Murder” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 2.4 million and 0.5/3 in AD18-49):
ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” soared by double digits week to week in Total Viewers (+14% – 2.4 million vs. 2.1 million) to a 3-week high and in Adults 18-49 (+25% – 0.5/3 vs. 0.4/2) to match a best-since premiere rating—since 10/3/19 and 9/26/19, respectively.

  • On average this season, ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder” is the No. 1 gainer on the broadcast networks among Adults 18-49, soaring by +140% over its L+SD rating after 7 days of TV playback.

Opposite the start of the 2019 World Series on Fox at 8:00 p.m., ABC’s annual airing of “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” grew over its year-ago broadcast (on 10/18/18) by 11% in Total Viewers (5.0 million vs. 4.5 million) and by 9% with Adults 18-49 (1.2/6 vs. 1.1/5). “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” tied NBC’s “The Voice” as the No. 1 entertainment program in the 8:00 p.m. half-hour among Adults 18-49 (1.2/6) and beat CBS’ “NCIS” by 9% (1.1/5). “The Great Pumpkin” ranked as Tuesday’s No. 1 broadcast program among Kids 2-11 (1.3/8), tied with ABC’s “Toy Story of TERROR!.”

Airing against the World Series this year, ABC’s “Toy Story of TERROR!” improved over its year-ago telecast (on 10/18/18) by double digits in Total Viewers (+12% – 3.7 million vs. 3.3 million) and Adults 18-49 (+25% – 1.0/4 vs. 0.8/3). “Toy Story of TERROR!” stood as the No. 1 broadcast program of the night among Kids 2-11 (1.3/9), tied with ABC’s “It’s The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.”

Airing opposite the World Series for the first time this season, ABC’s “mixed-ish” (0.7/3) and “black-ish” (0.7/3) both grew week to week by 17% each among Adults 18-49.

During the week of Oct. 14, 2019, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” scored its most-watched week so far this season, soaring over the prior week by 16% in Total Viewers (2.034 million vs. 1.760 million). In fact, “Kimmel” delivered its largest weekly audience in more than 4 months—since the week of 6/3/19. In addition, the ABC late-night program built week to week by 4% in Adults 18-49 (434,000 vs. 417,000) to post its 2nd-best performance this season.

ABC’s “Kimmel” was the week’s No. 1 late-night talk show in Adults 18-49 on Monday (432,000), Tuesday (469,000) and Wednesday (510,000).

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.576 million Total Viewers, 418,000 Women 25-54 and 303,000 Women 18-49, during the week of Oct. 7, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.

For the 2nd week in a row, “The View” improved on the previous week (w/o 9/30/19) in Women 25-54 (+3%-418,000 vs. 405,000) and Women 18-49 (+4%-303,000 vs. 291,000). In fact, “The View” delivered its best Women 18-49 performance since March and strongest Women 25-54 number since Aprilsince weeks of 3/18/19 and 4/8/19, respectively. 

Season to date, amongst all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs (21 Total), “The View” (2.620 million) ranks No. 3, trailing only “Dr. Phil” (3.317 million) and “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (2.640 million), while leading No. 4 “Ellen” (2.607 million). In fact, “The View” is leading “Ellen” in Total Viewers for the first time at this point of the season in 7 years—since the 2012-13 season.

With the 2019 season of “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Good Doctor,” ABC stood as the most-watched network on Monday(7.0 million) and ran neck and neck for No. 1 among Adults 18-49 with CBS and NBC (1.0/5 vs. 1.1/5 – NBC and CBS tied). ABC shot up over the prior week by double digits in Total Viewers (+15%) and Adults 18-49 (+25%) to hit season highs on the night.

“Dancing with the Stars” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 7.3 million and 1.1/4 in AD18-49):
Featuring “Disney Night” on its 5th telecast of the season, ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” grew week to week by 14% in Total Viewers (7.3 million vs. 6.4 million) to draw its largest audience since its season premiere (since 9/16/19) and by 38% with Adults 18-49 (1.1/4 vs. 0.8/3) to deliver its highest-rated telecast so far this season. In addition, “DWTS” improved over the year-ago “Disney Night” by 10% in Adults 18-49 (vs. 1.0/4 on 10/22/18). Airing head-to-head from 8:00-10:00 p.m., “Dancing with the Stars” posted its closest finish with NBC’s “The Voice” this season, coming within 600,000 viewers and 3-tenths of a rating point.

“The Good Doctor” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 6.6 million and 1.0/5 in AD18-49):
ABC’s “The Good Doctor” spiked over the previous week by 18% in Total Viewers (6.6 million vs. 5.6 million) to attract its biggest audience of the season and by 11% with Adults 18-49 (1.0/5 vs. 0.9/4) to match its season premiere at a season high. In the Monday 10:00 p.m. hour, “The Good Doctor” ranked as the No. 1 series in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, dominating CBS’ “Bull” (5.7 million and 0.6/3) and NBC’s “Bluff City Law” (3.6 million and 0.5/2).

  • Through its first two telecasts, ABC’s “The Good Doctor” is the season’s No. 1 gainer in delayed viewing in Total Viewers (+5.66 million), growing to 11.83 million viewers after seven days of TV playback to stand as Monday’s most-watched TV series. In addition, the ABC drama is Monday’s No. 1 playback gainer this season among Adults 18-49 with a lift of +1.1 rating points over its L+SD rating.

“Nightline” narrowed its Adults 25-54 margin year to year (w/o 10/8/18) with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” by 75% (2,000 vs. 8,000).

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+48,000-398,000 vs. 350,000) and Adults 18-49 (+43,000-291,000 vs. 248,000), delivering its best-ever Adults 18-49 advantage in the 5 seasons that the two shows have aired in their respective time slots—since the 2015-2016 season.

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Adults 25-54 (414,000), and Adults 18-49 (302,000) during the week of Sept. 30, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.  “Nightline” outdelivered CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (334,000 and 240,000, respectively) by 80,000 Adults 25-54 and 62,000 Adults 18-49.

In addition, “Nightline” defeated NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (1.122 million, 394,000 and 299,000) across the board: Total Viewers (+5,000), Adults 25-54 (+20,000) and Adults 18-49 (+3,000).

For the 3rd consecutive week, “Nightline” posted gains on the previous week (363,000 and 263,000, respectively, for w/o 9/23/19) in Adults 25-54 (+14%) and Adults 18-49 (+15%). In fact, “Nightline” delivered its best numbers in both Adult demos in over 3 months since w/o 6/10/19.

On Thursday (10/3/19), “Nightline” scored its strongest single-day telecast in Adults 25-54 (468,000) and Adults 18-49 (341,000) in nearly 4 months – since 6/13/19.

Two weeks into the season, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+60,000 – 402,000 vs. 342,000) and Adults 18-49 (+50,000 – 291,000 vs. 241,000), delivering its best-ever Adults 18-49 advantage in the 5 seasons that the two shows have aired in their respective time slots – since the 2015-2016 season.

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” stood as the evening’s No. 1 newscast in Total Viewers (8.242 million) and Adults 25-54 (1.599 million) for the week of Sept. 30, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” led “NBC Nightly News” (7.409 million and 1.556 million, respectively) by 833,000 Total Viewers and by 43,000 Adults 25-54. “World News Tonight” increased its Total Viewer winning advantage over the NBC program both week to week (+22%; vs. 682,000 on w/o 9/23/19) and year to year (+46%; vs. 572,000 for w/o 10/1/18).

“World News Tonight” stood as the only evening newscast to post increases year to year (w/o 10/1/18) in any demo: Total Viewer (+94,000/+1% – 8.242 million vs. 8.148 million), Adults 25-54 (+37,000/+2% – 1.599 million vs. 1.562 million) and Adults 18-49 (+35,000/+3% – 1.066 million vs. 1.031 million).

“World News Tonight” improved on the previous week (w/o 9/23/19) in Total Viewers (+281,000/+4% – 8.242 million vs. 7.961 million) and Adults 25-54 (+77,000/+5% – 1.599 million vs. 1.522 million), posting its strongest news demo performance in over 3 months – since w/o 6/3/19.
Two weeks into the season, “World News Tonight” (8.147 million) ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers at this point of the season for the 4th consecutive year.  In fact, “World News Tonight” is increasing its lead over “NBC Nightly News” (7.392 million) from last season by 28% (755,000 vs. 589,000) to its largest season lead in 24 years – since the 1995-1996 season. “World News Tonight” leads CBS Evening News” (5.148 million) by 2.999 million, posting its biggest Total Viewer advantage in at least 28 years (since at least the start of Nielsen electronic database in 1991-1992 season).

In addition, “World News Tonight” is cutting its season margins with NBC by more than half in both Adults 25-54 (-92% – 12,000 vs. 154,000) and Adults 18-49 (-77% – 37,000 vs. 161,000), seeing its smallest Adults 25-54 gap in 5 years and its closest Adults 18-49 margin in 12 years — since the 2014-2015 and the 2007-2008 seasons, respectively.

For the week, “World News Tonight” (8.242 million, 1.599 million and 1.066 million, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (5.203 million, 941,000 and 663,000, respectively) by 3.039 million Total Viewers, by 658,000 Adults 25-54 and 403,000 Adults 18-49.

“Kids Say the Darndest Things” (8:00-9:00 p.m. – 5.4 million and 0.9/4 in AD18-49):
Opposite the first hour of NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” at 8:00 p.m., ABC’s “Kids Say the Darndest Things” stood as the No. 2 series debut this season in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 – tie), behind only Fox’s “Prodigal Son” by just 1-tenth of a rating point despite airing against NFL coverage. The debut of “Kids Say” improved over the premiere of “DWTS: Juniors” in the hour on the year-ago night by 8% in Total Viewers (5.4 million vs. 5.0 million) and by 29% in Adults 18-49 (0.9/4 vs. 0.7/3), marking the Net’s most-watched fall premiere in the slot in 4 years – since 9/27/15. In fact, “Kids Say the Darndest Things” shot up over its “AFV” lead-in by sizable double digits in both Viewers (+32%) and Adults 18-49 (+50%), moving up to rank as the No. 2 entertainment series in the 8:00 p.m. hour.

From 8:00-9:00 p.m. opposite Fox’s “The Masked Singer,” ABC’s “The Goldbergs” and “Schooled” both held 100% of their week-earlier season premieres in Adults 18-49 (1.0/5 and 0.8/4, respectively).

At 9:00 p.m., ABC’s “Modern Family” moved up to rank No. 1 in its half-houramong Adults 18-49 (1.1/5-tie), beating Fox’s “The Masked Singer”-led debut of “Almost Family” by 22% (0.9/4). “Modern Family” grew over its prior week premiere by 5% in Total Viewers (4.3 million vs. 4.1 million) and retained 100% among Adults 18-49 (1.1/5). The ABC comedy ranked as Wednesday’s No. 1 scripted show of the night with Adults 18-49 (tied with NBC’s “Chicago Fire”).

In the 9:30 p.m. half-hour, ABC’s “Single Parents” improved over its week-earlier season opener in both Total Viewers (+4% – 2.9 million vs. 2.8 million) and Adults 18-49 (+14% – 0.8/3 vs. 0.7/3). In fact, the sophomore ABC sitcom matched its highest-rated telecast since December 2018 in Adults 18-49 – since 12/12/18. “Single Parents” topped “Almost Family” in the half-hour by 14% with Adults 18-49 (0.8/3 vs. 0.7/3).

In the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Stumptown” held 100% of its prior week debut in Adults 18-49 (0.7/4) and outdelivered CBS’ “S.W.A.T.” premiere by 17% (0.6/3) to rank No. 2 in the hour, while narrowing the gap with NBC’s “Chicago P.D.” (1.0/5) to 3-tenths of a rating point versus 4-tenths the prior week.
