ABC’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Finale Marks a New Season High in Adults 18-49
“Dancing with the Stars” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 7.8 million and 1.1/5 in AD18-49):
The live season finale of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” shot up over the prior week by double digits in Total Viewers (+18% – 7.8 million vs. 6.6 million) to draw its largest audience since its season premiere(since 9/16/19) and in Adults 18-49 (+38% – 1.1/5 vs. 0.8/4) to hit a new season high. “DWTS” matched its year-ago finale among Adults 18-49 (1.1/4 on 11/19/18) to tie its highest rating on any night in 2 years – since the 2017 finale on 11/21/17.
ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” stood as Monday’s No. 1 series in Total Viewers (7.8 million), topping NBC’s “The Voice” by 7% (7.3 million) and Fox’s “9-1-1” by 28% (6.1 million). In fact, “DWTS” beat “The Voice” for the first time this season in Viewers (+7%) and driven by its new season high, tied “The Voice” for the first time this season in Adults 18-49 (1.1/5).

ABC’s “The View” averaged 2.510 million Total Viewers, 387,000 Women 25-54 and 272,000 Women 18-49, during the week of Nov. 18, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research.



“The View” improved on the previous week in Women 25-54 (+3% – 387,000 vs. 376,000) and Women 18-49 (+4% – 272,000 vs. 261,000), hitting a 6-week high in Women 18-49 – since w/o 10/7/19.



Season to date, amongst all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs (21 total), “The View” (2.600 million) ranks No. 4, trailing only “Dr. Phil” (3.509 million), “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (2.742 million) and “Ellen” (2.694 million).



NOTE: Due to live coverage of the House impeachment hearings, “The View” was preempted on Tuesday (11/19/19) and Wednesday (11/20/19), and was coded as a breakout on Thursday (11/21/19). Season to Date, ‘World News Tonight’ Is the Only Evening Newscast to Grow in Total Viewers

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the No. 1 evening newscast across the board Total Viewers (8.797 million), Adults 25-54 (1.708 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.157 million) for the week of Nov. 18, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” outperformed “NBC Nightly News” (7.915 million, 1.662 million and 1.132 million, respectively) by 882,000 Total Viewers, 46,000 Adults 25-54 and by 25,000 Adults 18-49.

In addition, turning in its largest Total Viewer lead of the season, “World News Tonight” increased its advantage from the previous week by 20% (vs. 736,000) to its largest in 12 weeks – since w/o 8/26/19.

On Wednesday (11/20/19), “World News Tonight” out-delivered “NBC Nightly News” head-to-head by its largest single-day margin in Total Viewers (+1.187 million – 8.776 million vs. 7.589 million) of the season to its largest in over 3 months– since 8/7/19, based on regular telecasts.

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (8.535 million) ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers at this point of the season for the 4th consecutive year. In fact, “World News Tonight” is more than doubling its lead over “NBC Nightly News” (7.771 million) from last season (+175% – 764,000 vs. 278,000) to its largest season lead in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season. “World News Tonight” leads “CBS Evening News” (5.442 million) by 3.093 million, posting its biggest Total Viewer season advantage in at least 28 years (since at least the start of Nielsen electronic database in the 1991-1992 season).

“World News Tonight” is also improving on Total Viewers compared to the same point last season (+26,000 – 8.535 million vs. 8.509 million), standing as the only evening newscast to grow.

In addition, “World News Tonight” is No. 1 for the season in Adults 25-54, leading NBC by 8,000 news demo viewers (1.667 million vs. 1.659 million) and taking the top spot for the first time at this point of a season in 5 years—since the 2014-2015 season. “World News Tonight” is also slashing its season margin with NBC in Adults 18-49 (-72% – 28,000 vs. 101,000), seeing its closest gap in 23 years—since the 1996-1997 season. 

“World News Tonight” is No. 1 in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 season to date for the first time in 23 years—since the 1996-1997 season.

For the week, “World News Tonight” (8.797 million, 1.708 million and 1.157 million, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (5.608 million, 1.102 million and 799,000, respectively) by 3.189 million Total Viewers, by 606,000 Adults 25-54 and 358,000 Adults 18-49.

The fall finale of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” marked the series’ most-watched telecast since its season premiere eight weeks earlier and its highest-rated episode among Adults 18-49 in six weeks – since 9/26/19 and 10/10/19, respectively. Grey’s” built for the 3rd straight week in Total Viewers (+2% – 8.8 million vs. 8.6 million) and grew by 5% week to week among Adults 18-49 (2.2/11 vs. 2.1/10). The ABC drama stood as Thursday’s No. 1 entertainment program among Adults 18-49, standing as the night’s top non-sports program for the 9th straight week.



“A Million Little Things” (9:01-10:01 p.m. – 7.0 million and 1.4/7 in AD18-49):

On its fall finale, ABC’s “A Million Little Things” drew its biggest audience in seven weeks (since 10/3/19), growing for the 3rd week in a row in Total Viewers (+3% – 7.0 million vs. 6.8 million). After standing 2-tenths behind CBS’ “Young Sheldon” in L+SD, AMLT” emerged as Thursday’s No. 2 non-sports program in the L+3 numbers with Adults 18-49 (1.4/7), tying the CBS sitcom. ABC’s “AMLT” ranked as the No. 1 entertainment program in the 9:00 p.m. hour with Adults 18-49 (1.4/7), beating CBS’ comedies by 40% (1.0/5) and NBC’s comedies by 40% (1.0/5).

·       The “2019 AMAs” delivered ABC’s strongest performance in the Sunday 8:00-11:00 p.m. time slot with entertainment programming among Adults 18-49 in 9 months since “The Oscars®” in February – since 2/24/19.

The week before its Fall finale, ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” scored its most-watched telecast in 5 weeks (8.6 million) and held even week to week among Adults 18-49 (2.1/10) – since 10/10/19. The ABC drama stood as Thursday’s No. 1 entertainment program among Adults 18-49, ranking as the night’s top non-sports program for the 8th week running.



·       “Grey’s Anatomy” ranked as Thursday’s No. 1 gainer in TV playback among Adults 18-49, growing by +0.8 rating points from its L+SD rating to its L+3 rating. In fact, on average during the first 7 weeks of the season, Grey’s Anatomy” is Thursday’s No. 1 playback gainer (and No. 2 for the season overall) among Adults 18-49 (+0.8 rating points).



“A Million Little Things” (9:00-10:00 p.m. – 6.8 million and 1.5/7 in AD18-49):

One week ahead of its Fall finale, A Million Little Things” grew for the 2nd consecutive week in Total Viewers (+1% – 6.8 million vs. 6.7 million) to a 6-week high and spiked week to week by double digits among Adults 18-49 (+15% – 1.5/7 vs. 1.3/6) to a 5-week high – since 10/3/19 and 10/10/19, respectively. ABC’s “AMLT” ranked as the No. 1 non-sports program in the 9:00 p.m. hour with Adults 18-49 (1.5/7), topping CBS’ comedies by 36% (1.1/5) and NBC’s comedies by 50% (1.0/4).



·       Growing by +0.7 rating points from L+SD to L+3, “A Million Little Things” matched its 2nd-largest playback lift this season among Adults 18-49 and stood as Thursday’s No. 2 playback gainer (tie), behind only ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy.”

‘Nightline’ Continues to Slash Its Margins With NBC’s ‘Late Night with Seth Meyers’ by More Than Half in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49, Delivering Its Closest-Ever Key Adult Demo Performances in 6 Seasons

Season to Date, ‘Nightline’ Leads CBS’ ‘The Late Late Show with James Corden’ in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Adults 18-49 (285,000) for the 4th time in the last 5 weeks during the week of Nov. 11, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” (1.172 million and 285,000 respectively) outperformed NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (1.124 million 273,000, respectively) by 48,000 Total Viewers and by 12,000 Adults 18-49.

In addition, “Nightline” (387,000 and 285,000 respectively) led CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (333,000 and 234,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+54,000) and Adults 18-49 (+51,000).  

“Nightline” posted gains on the previous week (1.128 million, 376,000 and 272,000, respectively) across the board: Total Viewers (+4%), Adults 25-54 (+3%) and Adults 18-49 (+5%).

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+40,000 – 401,000 vs. 361,000) and Adults 18-49 (+28,000 – 290,000 vs. 262,000).

In addition, “Nightline” is slashing its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” by more than half in both Adults 25-54 (-64% – 27,000 vs. 74,000) and Adults 18-49 (-60% – 21,000 vs. 52,000) to its closest-ever performances in both key adult measures in the 6 seasons the two shows have aired in their respective time slots—since the 2014-2015 season.

Stories reported on “Nightline” last week included an exclusive interview with a 13-year-old survivor of the Mexican ambush that killed nine, continuous coverage of the impeachment inquiry, a school shooting in Southern California, how Sunny Hostin’s childhood experience motivated her to study law, an interview with Dolly Parton, and a look at the Broadway show centered on Tina Turner’s story.

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” finished as the evening’s No. 1 newscast in Total Viewers (9.120 million) and Adults 25-54 (1.817 million) for the week of Nov. 11, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. Taking the top spot in both measures for the 6th time in the last 7 weeks, “World News Tonight” outdelivered “NBC Nightly News” (8.384 million and 1.786 million, respectively) by 736,000 Total Viewers and 31,000 Adults 25-54. In addition, “World News Tonight” more than doubled its Total Viewer lead year to year (+165%; vs. 278,000).

Anchor David Muir anchored “World News Tonight” from Washington, D.C., on Tuesday (11/12/19) and Wednesday (11/13/19) to cover the first public impeachment inquiry hearings for President Donald Trump. On Tuesday, “World News Tonight” delivered the most-watched single evening newscast (9.328 million) on any network in 7 months – since 4/15/19, including all “NBC Nightly News” and “CBS Evening News” telecasts.

For the 3rd consecutive week, “World News Tonight” posted gains on the previous week in Total Viewers (+141,000/+2% – 9.120 million vs. 8.979 million), Adults 25-54 (+38,000/+2 % – 1.817 million vs. 1.779 million) and Adults 18-49 (+14,000/+1% – 1.211 million vs. 1.197 million) and hit season highs across the board. In fact, “World News Tonight” turned in its best performances in 8 months in all three measures – since weeks of 3/4/19, 3/11/19 and 3/11/19, respectively.  

“World News Tonight” cut its Adults 18-49 gap with “NBC Nightly News” from the same week last year by 29% (35,000 vs. 49,000).

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (8.499 million) ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers at this point of the season for the 4th consecutive year. In fact, “World News Tonight” is more than doubling its lead over “NBC Nightly News” (7.747 million) from last season (+128% – 752,000 vs. 330,000) to its largest season lead in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season. “World News Tonight” leads “CBS Evening News” (5.417 million) by 3.082 million, posting its biggest Total Viewer season advantage in at least 28 years (since at least the start of Nielsen electronic database in the 1991-1992 season).

“World News Tonight” is also improving on Total Viewers compared to the same point last season (+15,000 – 8.499 million vs. 8.484 million), standing as the only evening newscast to grow.

In addition, “World News Tonight” is No. 1 for the season in Adults 25-54, leading NBC by 5,000 news demo viewers (1.662 million vs. 1.657 million) and taking the top spot for the first time at this point of a season in 5 years—since the 2014-2015 season. “World News Tonight” is also slashing its season margin with NBC in Adults 18-49 (-68% – 32,000 vs. 99,000), seeing its closest gap in 23 years—since the 1996-97 season. 

“World News Tonight” is No. 1 in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 season to date for the first time in 12 years—since the 2007-2008 season.

For the week, “World News Tonight” (9.120 million, 1.817 million and 1.211 million, respectively) outdelivered “CBS Evening News” (6.014 million, 1.171 million and 836,000, respectively) by 3.106 million Total Viewers, by 646,000 Adults 25-54 and 375,000 Adults 18-49.

During the week of Nov. 11, 2019, ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” grew for the 2nd straight week to a new season high in Adults 18-49 (+9% – 453,000 vs. 416,000). In fact, “Kimmel” delivered its strongest performance among Adults 18-49 in 5 months – since the week of 6/10/19.

Despite airing a repeat telecast on Friday (versus four original broadcasts for “Colbert”), ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” edged out CBS’ “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” (453,000 vs. 451,000) to rank as the No. 1 late-night talk show of the week among Adults 18-49, while topping NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” by 3% (441,000). In fact, the Wednesday telecast of “Kimmel” (11/13/19) was the week’s No. 1 late-night telecast in Adults 18-49 (622,000).

With the 2019 season of “Dancing with the Stars” and “The Good Doctor,” ABC stood as the most-watched broadcast network on Monday (8.3 million). ABC grew for the 2nd straight week in Total Viewers (+5% – 8.3 million vs. 7.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (+9% – 1.2/5 vs. 1.1/5) to its most-watched Monday in 4 weeks—since 10/14/19.

“Dancing with the Stars” (8:00-10:00 p.m. – 7.6 million and 1.1/4 in AD18-49):

ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” grew week to week by 4% with Total Viewers (7.6 million vs. 7.3 million) to a 4-week high and by 10% with Adults 18-49 (1.1/4 vs. 1.0/4) to match its strongest telecast since its season premiere—since 10/14/19 and 9/16/19, respectively.



“The Good Doctor” (10:00-11:00 p.m. – 9.7 million and 1.5/7 in AD18-49):

ABC’s “The Good Doctor” spiked over the previous week by 8% in Total Viewers (9.7 million vs. 9.0 million) and by 7% with Adults 18-49 (1.5/7 vs. 1.4/7) to draw its largest audience in 4 weeks – since 10/14/19. After ranking No. 4 in L+SD, “The Good Doctor” emerged as Monday’s No. 1 series in Total Viewers in L+3, moving ahead of Fox’s “9-1-1” (9.6 million), NBC’s “The Voice” (9.0 million) and ABC’s “DWTS” (7.6 million). In the Monday 10:00 p.m. hour, “The Good Doctor” ranked as the No. 1 series in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, dominating NBC’s “Bluff City Law” (5.5 million and 0.7/4).



·       Through the first seven weeks of the season, ABC’s “The Good Doctor” is the season’s No. 1 gainer in delayed viewing in Total Viewers, soaring by +3.96 million viewers after three days of TV playback. In addition, the ABC drama is Monday’s No. 1 playback gainer this season among Adults 18-49 with a lift of +0.8 rating points from L+SD to L+3.

For the 2nd week in a row, “The View” improved on the previous week in Total Viewers (+6% – 2.689 million vs. 2.526 million), hitting a new season high and drawing its largest overall audience in over 6 months – since w/o 4/22/19.

On Thursday (11/7/19), “The View” celebrated its 5000th show with its most-watched telecast (3.021 million) in over 6 months – since 4/26/19.

Season to date, amongst all network and syndicated daytime talk shows and news programs (21 Total), “The View” (2.590 million) ranks No. 4, trailing only “Dr. Phil” (3.452 million), “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (2.722 million) and “Ellen” (2.668 million).

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranked No. 1 in Adults 25-54 (376,000) and Adults 18-49 (272,000) for the 3rd time in the last 4 weeks during the week of Nov. 4, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “Nightline” outperformed NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” (1.083 million, 345,000 and 253,000, respectively) by 45,000 Total Viewers, 31,000 Adults 25-54 and 19,000 Adults 18-49.

In addition, “Nightline” led CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” (368,000 and 270,000, respectively) in Adults 25-54 (+8,000) and Adults 18-49 (+2,000).  

“Nightline” improved week to week in Total Viewers (+5% – 1.128 million vs. 1.077 million).

“Nightline” narrowed its Total Viewer margin from the previous week with CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” by 25% (162,000 vs. 216,000).

Season to date, “Nightline” is leading CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” in Adults 25-54 (+38,000 – 402,000 vs. 364,000) and Adults 18-49 (+26,000 – 290,000 vs. 264,000).

In addition, “Nightline” is slashing its margins with NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” by more than half in both Adults 25-54 (-72% – 22,000 vs. 79,000) and Adults 18-49 (-60% – 23,000 vs. 58,000) to its closest-ever performances in both key adult measures in the 6 seasons the two shows have aired in their respective time slots—since the 2014-2015 season.

Stories reported on “Nightline” last week included a rare look inside the nuclear-powered submarine USS Florida, an examination of the grip drug cartels have in Mexico after an ambush killed nine Americans, a look at Sen. Kamala Harris’ formative years busing to school to competing on Howard University’s debate team, a custody battle in Texas that has fueled debate over transgender rights, the popularity and national security concerns of TikTok, and an interview with Bear Grylls about his vigorous training for survival.

NOTE: On Friday (11/8/19), CBS’ “The Late Late Show with James Corden” was retitled to “The Late Late Show-JC-ENC” and NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” was retitled to “Late Night with Seth Meyers-SM” due to being encore telecasts. The retitled telecasts will not be included in the season averages. CBS’ and NBC’s averages are based on four days (Monday-Thursday).

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” ranked as the No. 1 evening newscast in Total Viewers (8.979 million) and Adults 25-54 (1.779 million) for the week of Nov. 4, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. Taking the top spot in both measures for the 5th   time in the last 6 weeks, “World News Tonight” outdelivered “NBC Nightly News” (8.192 million and 1.771 million, respectively) by 787,000 Total Viewers and 8,000 Adults 25-54.   

In addition, “World News Tonight” increased its Total Viewer lead year to year by more than quadrupling its advantage (+366%; vs. 169,000), while growing its week-to-week lead by 1% (vs. 782,000).

On Monday (11/4/19), “World News Tonight” anchor David Muir’s exclusive report from the Eastern Mediterranean with unprecedented access on board the USS Florida submarine amid rising tensions in the region stood as the most-watched single evening newscast (9.320 million) on any network in over 6 months – since 4/15/19, including all “NBC Nightly News” and “CBS Evening News” telecasts.

On Tuesday (11/5/19), “World News Tonight” posted its strongest single telecast performances in Adults 25-54 (1.963 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.352 million) in 8 months – since 3/11/19.

“World News Tonight” improved on the same week last year in Total Viewers (+243,000/+3% – 8.979 million vs. 8.736 million), standing as the only evening newscast to build on its overall audience year to year.

For the 2nd week in a row, “World News Tonight” posted week-to-week increases in Total Viewers (+321,000/+4% – 8.979 million vs. 8.658 million), Adults 25-54 (+116,000/+7% – 1.779 million vs. 1.663 million) and Adults 18-49 (+73,000/+6% – 1.197 million vs. 1.124 million) to hit season highs across the board. In fact, “World News Tonight” turned in its strongest numbers in 8 months in all three measures – since weeks of 3/4/19, 3/11/19 and 3/11/19, respectively.  

“World News Tonight” slashed its Adults 18-49 margins with “NBC Nightly News” both week to week (-47% – 24,000 vs. 45,000) and year to year (-84% – 24,000 vs. 147,000).

Season to date, “World News Tonight” (8.403 million) ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers at this point of the season for the 4th consecutive year. In fact, “World News Tonight” is more than doubling its lead over “NBC Nightly News” (7.649 million) from last season (+121% – 754,000 vs. 341,000) to its largest season lead in 24 years—since the 1995-1996 season. “World News Tonight” leads “CBS Evening News” (5.326 million) by 3.077 million, posting its biggest Total Viewer season advantage in at least 28 years (since at least the start of Nielsen electronic database in the 1991-1992 season).

“World News Tonight” is also improving on Total Viewers compared to the same point last season (+34,000 – 8.403 million vs. 8.369 million), standing as the only evening newscast to grow.

In addition, “World News Tonight” is No. 1 for the season in Adults 25-54, leading NBC by 2,000 news demo viewers (1.638 million vs. 1.636 million) and taking the top spot for the first time at this point of a season in 5 years—since the 2014-2015 season. “World News Tonight” is also slashing its season margin with NBC in Adults 18-49 (-70% – 31,000 vs. 104,000), seeing its closest gap in 12 years—since the 2007-2008 season. 

“World News Tonight” is No. 1 in both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54 season to date for the first time in 12 years—since the 2007-2008 season.

For the week, “World News Tonight” (8.979 million, 1.779 million and 1.197 million, respectively) beat “CBS Evening News” (5.735 million, 1.106 million and 815,000, respectively) by 3.244 million Total Viewers, by 673,000 Adults 25-54 and 382,000 Adults 18-49.

For the 3rd telecast in a row, “20/20” grew from its year-ago telecast (11/9/18) by double digits across the board: Total Viewers (+11% – 3.0 million vs. 2.7 million), Adults 18-49 (+25% – 0.5/3 vs. 0.4/2) and Adults 25-54 (+29% – 0.9/4 vs. 0.7/3). 

Season to date, “20/20” is Friday’s only newsmagazine up from the same point last year with Total Viewers (+5% – 3.9 million vs. 3.7 million) and Adults 18-49 (+17% – 0.7/4 vs. 0.6/3), drawing its largest overall audience  in 3 years – since the 2016-2017 season.

Signaling a significant change in consumers’ viewing habits, all of ABC’s original series saw tremendous growth over their initially reported Live Same Day numbers after 35 days of delayed viewing across all platforms, posting an average lift of +203% from LSD to MP35 during Premiere Week of the 2019-2020 season.

  

·       Eight of ABC’s premieres posted gains or held even with their prior season averages after 35 days of delayed viewing, including the Net’s No. 1 drama (“Grey’s Anatomy”) and No. 1 comedy (“Modern Family”): “AFV” (+46%), “Dancing with the Stars” (+31%), “Shark Tank” (+6%), “Grey’s Anatomy” (+5%), “black-ish” (+4%), “Modern Family” (even), “Bless This Mess” (even) and “American Housewife” (even).

  

·       All three of ABC’s new scripted series posted triple-digit increases among Adults 18-49 from their Live Same Day ratings to their Multiplatform 35-day ratings, as “Stumptown” more than quadrupled its LSD rating with a lift of +357% (0.7 rating to 3.2 rating).



·       Five of ABC’s premieres this season hit the 3.0 rating mark among Adults 18-49 after 35 days of delayed viewing across all platforms, with “Grey’s Anatomy” posting above a 6.0 rating“Grey’s Anatomy” (6.45 rating), “The Good Doctor” (4.35 rating), “Modern Family” (4.28 rating), “A Million Little Things” (3.43 rating) and “Stumptown” (3.22 rating).

·       In Total Viewers, eight of ABC’s premieres delivered at least 10 million viewers, with “The Good Doctor” growing to more than 17 million viewers after 35 days of delayed viewing across all platforms: “The Good Doctor” (17.2 million), “Grey’s Anatomy” (16.6 million), “Stumptown” (12.8 million), “A Million Little Things” (11.5 million), “Emergence” (11.3 million), “Modern Family” (11.3 million), “The Rookie” (11.1 million) and “The Conners” (10.4 million).
